Abodo Po was a young scientist who turned to magic after receiving, what he believes to be, a prophetic dream.

History

Background and Early Life

Po was born to a wealthy Dunesfolk family in Ul'Dah. The family was one of the Dunesfolk mercantile families that helped form Ul'Dah ages ago. Po's parents spared no expense to give Po a sophisticated education. From an early age, the boy was skilled in reading and writing all civilized languages. He mastered history and finance and excelled at both math and science. At age seventeen, Abodo Po was to take over part of his father's business as a high-end merchant.

Career in Mercantilism

Po's career as a merchant was short-lived. Although he tried to help his family, customers and business partners found him too introverted and strange to interact with. While on an airship heading home to tell the disappointing news to his father, an engine crashed, and Po's quick-thinking and skill in science helped prevent the airship from crashing into the ground. It was from then on that Po decided to work in science.

Career as a Scientist

Much to the dismay of his parents and siblings, Abodo Po began working with local scientists on new weapons and transportation for Ul'Dah. This job brought him nearly no sleep, and for most of the day he would be locked in the lowest floors of the family estate, working on his many projects. During his years as a scientist, Abodo became increasingly cynical and judgmental of the outside world. He turned all of his anger toward society. He hated interacting with people. Po saw people as stupid followers of whoever was in power. As his disdain for civilization grew, his time in isolation began to consume him.

The Nightmares Begin

One night, Abodo Po was sleeping in his labratory when he had a nightmare that was both frighteningly real and mysteriously vague. In his dream, he saw himself wielding great elemental power, pitted against a monster whose appearance he could not make out. There were others with him, who he could not identify. Although it was never explicitly shown or stated in the nightmare, he knew that the world was at its end. Po woke up sweating, but soon dismissed it as a nightmare caused by him over-working his brain. A week passed without incident, and then the nightmare came to him again. The nightmare would strike him weekly for months. Eventually it became more frequent, haunting him nearly every night. Abodo was sure he was going mad. He did not believe in visions and he had no interest in the magical arts. He worshiped none of the Gods.

The Choice to Leave, and the Following Five Years

After a year of holding out, Abodo Po could ignore the visions no longer. He knew in his heart that Evil was coming to Eorzea. With that, he made plans to leave Ul'Dah and find a way to stop it. Taking with him nothing but a satchel of food and supplies, and leaving nothing but a note for his family, Abodo wandered off. Eventually, despite his best efforts to avoid it, he came to the conclusion that he would have to learn magic to prevent whatever is coming, be it symbolic or physical. Po plotted a course to Gridania to learn from the Conjurers of the Black Shroud.

For the past five years, Abodo Po has been mastering the arts of conjury, arcanism, and most of all thaumaturgy. His brilliant mind has made him a very fast learner and he has even surpassed many of his teachers. Unfortunately, his thoughts have become darker as the visions have become increasingly frequent and vague. Po left with a finite amount of gil, and now has become and adventurer to make up for the monetary loss he's suffered in the past few years. Through his time adventuring, he has become quite a combatant as well, using his magical abilities for more than just scholastic purposes.

Personality

Abodo Po is highly intelligent and introverted. He shies away from crowds and social situations that make him uncomfortable. He is a student of magic, although he is often skeptical of his own abilities, believing there is a scientific explanation behind every spell he is able to cast. Though he tends to avoid people, Po doesn't mind making friends and is very loyal to people he can trust. His sense of humor is very sarcastic and deadpan, and most of his "jokes" are just the result of his accidental lack of sensitivity when speaking honestly. Po has the opposite personality of many Lalafell. He lacks the naivete that is characteristic of his race, and is usually all business. Despite his seemingly robotic attitude, he is surprisingly empathetic to people in distress (sometimes to his own dismay) and even good-humored on his best days. His intelligence is his most paramount trait. He is an extremely fast learner and problem solver, able to pick up many forms of magic and combat in just five years. On top of this, he is one of the greatest scientific minds in Ul'Dah which makes him a very logical thinker.

Abodo has a great disdain for most of society. With the exception of small towns and villages, he dislikes almost all of civilization to the point of even blueprinting ideas for self-sustainable airships so that he can leave the civilized world and live in the sky. All of these plans turned out to be pipe dreams when the visions began, and he reluctantly forced himself to begin a life of adventuring. He still feels best when he is on his own in the wilderness.

Po is a victim of nightmarish visions that vary in their vagueness and frequency. He never has them while awake, but they haunt him at night. They are so varied that sometimes he believes them to be actually happening, while other times he only experiences a feeling of absolute dread in his sleep. The lack of sleep caused by the nightmares has somewhat affected his mannerisms and many people have rumors about his sanity, ranging from him being mildly paranoid to murderously occult.

Body Type: Abodo is average height for a Lalafell male, though he is less round in the waist and thighs. His face has a slightly more adult look to it, including a longer nose and smaller eyes. These differences are quite minuscule and he looks the same as any other Lalafell to the average passer-by. Those who have great attention to detail will notice this more mature look fairly quickly. In addition to this, his voice is as deep as any other twenty-eight year old male, and lacks the childlike high pitch that is characteristic of roughly half of all Lalafell adults. Overall, his appearance is plainly that of a Lalafell until put in direct comparison to another of his race. The slight alterations are based solely on diet, exercise, posture, and personality, although some more eccentric acquaintances believe it is because his family has supposed Hyur blood somewhere far back in its family tree.

Clothing: Abodo Po is partial to baggy robes, slacks, a hood or an occasional hat. His taste ranges from fancy to very basic. Being from wealth, he is used to wearing fine silk of rich colors and golden thread for decoration. In the past five years, he has had to settle for drab clothing in colors of gray, brown, and green. He has found that he enjoys this drab clothing and the fact that he draws no attention to himself while wearing it. He usually carries simple staves made of wood for casting his magic, though when his journey started and his money was plentiful he carried a nicer staff of gold and ebony. Sometimes, Po wears clothing that would not suggest that he is a student of magic. This clothing is usually simple, like a shirt, vest, and slacks. For obvious reasons, Po refuses to wear armor and will not cover himself in anything heavier than cloth.
