An only child, his mother died during birth; his father following shortly, committing suicide a year after. As a result, he was brought up by friends of the family, Who worked predominately in hospitality and through the Maelstrom. It was an earnest life and upbringing (as close as one could get during the time), although restrictive; his foster family wanting to keep him within reach out of fear of him meeting an early grave, thus adding to his family's tragedy. Nonetheless, he persistently made attempts towards venturing out and understanding the world and beyond he lived in. At first, he managed to convince his parents his tenure with the Arcanist's Guild was purely academic, but sure enough they could see him slipping away in other manners; sneaking out to record nightlife city activity, undocumented assistance to caravans and traveling merchants, and extensive cataloging and comparison of marine species are just naming a few of his extracurricular hobbies. He was aware of their suspicions, as well; before they could confront him about his behavior, he made break for Ul'dahn, purchasing fare with some emergency funds he'd been saving secretly. He has since been wandering the Shroud and Thanalan, yet to even entertain the idea of returning to La Nocsea. Julian doesn't think of himself as much beyond "just a guy who travels a lot and pokes his head in all sorts of places and affairs." He tends towards focusing on others usually, handling his own matters on the side. Generally, he places the needs of others, especially those disadvantaged, above his own. He is quite dependent on personal experience being his judge of interactions with anyone specific he meets, rather than paying much, if any, attention to rumor, title, legend, and any other opinion beyond understanding where someone comes from.
