She was free in her wildness. She was a wanderess, a drop of free water. She belonged to no man and to no city.

Style
Jaded, unhinged, yet hopeful. Right-handed. Minor scars here and there. Freckles cover her face and most of her body. Light fabrics; risque.
Hair & Eyes
Waves of flaxen silk drape down the Hyur's back, the curled ends just barely caressing the curves of her hips. Bangs frame her face, laying flat against her forehead, seldom tucked behind her ears.

Her eyes tell a story all their own, the orbs a misty blue comparable to the frozen rivers that surround the place she once called home. Her gaze weaves a tale of pain and deceit yet glows with ambition, the icy fire within not quite ready to die.
Physique & Markings
Valeraine is slender yet slightly curvy, her figure often overlooked until undressed. She is pear-shaped, her chest petite and perky while her hips prove to be her most prominent feature. You will find little muscle on her as she has no use for an athletic physique anymore.

Her skin is painted in freckles from her head to her toes. The specks are most noticeable on her face, and she wears them with pride, refusing to conceal them with unnecessary creams.
Hygiene & Attire
Cleanliness is key for Valeraine. She despises being dirty and will go above and beyond to ensure that she is always presentable, not only for herself but for her patrons. If her agenda allows it, she takes several baths a da, her aversion to germs and grime stemming from her recent trauma. Her collection of essential oils and perfumes continues to grow, but she is partial to a mixture of lavender, sun lemon, and galago mint. As for makeup, while she does not cover her face, her eyes are typically lined and winged. Her staple, however, is her crimson-painted lips.

Her armoire is a cocktail of chiffon, silk, and lace. Unused to the heat of Gridania, she finds it most comfortable to adorn herself in thin fabrics rather than the furs and heavy cottons of her homeland. She is not shy when it comes to showing skin, and her attire could be described as risque and avant garde.
Personality
Psychological Profile
Valeraine has been to hell and back, and she wears her scars (both emotional and physical) with pride. The murder of her late husband has left her a hollow shell of the woman she once was, but she has evolved from her trauma, though it may not be for the best. Labeled as a heretic, a murderer, and an abandoner, she is wary of strangers and does not trust with ease. Though none of these accusations ring true apart from the latter, she dares not risk the possibility of being captured for these false crimes.

Delusions plague her like a virus. The hallucinations began shortly after witnessing the death of her husband, and though there has been no formal diagnosis, Valeraine shows symptoms of a mild case of paranoid schizophrenia. She believes her thirst for revenge is justified and almost encouraged by Halone, leaving little room for discussion or to persuade her otherwise on the matter.

When her symptoms are at a low, Valeraine can act and appear as your average gypsy. She is beautiful, elegant, and sassy to a fault. Her ability to acknowledge and prevent her ailment has allowed her to thrive in her business as a fortune teller and faith healer. But when solace escapes her, she is a force to be reckoned with, and may Halone show mercy on the next soul to do her wrong.
Voice
Valeraine's voice is kind yet rough around the edges. Her words would almost be soothing were they not laced with venom. She speaks with the grace and refinery of a proper Ishgardian lady but tries her best to hide her dialect.
Philosophy & Mannerisms
While the Hyur never held religion in high regard, she has grown to honor and respect Halone. Her hatred lies only with the corruption of her once-home, not with her patron Goddess. She does not actively pray nor does she seek others with like-minded views.

She does, however, live by the cards. Her affinity for tarot and the occult runs deep through her veins. She cautions her patrons just as she cautions herself: take the cards for what they are, and do not run from your fate. Never will you see her wave a reading aside.

Cold yet not quite lost, Valeraine believes in justice, charity, and respect. She would never turn down a soul in need of her talent nor company. Though a woman of little words, there is still a shred of humanity left in her.

Sixth Astral Era
Childhood
Valeraine is one of three girls born to an Elezen merchant and a Hyur handmaiden. Her family suffered from racism, the world's hatred nipping at them like rabid wolves from the day their story began. Her father once called himself a nobleman, son to a prominent Ishgardian family until he impregnated his forbidden lover. Cast from the family tree, he sought to make a name for himself, and thanks to a few merciful acquaintances, he earned himself a spot among the other vendors the in Jeweled Cozier. Her mother remained within their humble household, shielding the girls from the judgement that brewed outside their walls.

Valeraine was the youngest and most fortunate of the siblings for she did not bear the elongated ears or legs like that of the others, allowing her freedom from much of the torment. Passing as an ordinary Hyur was quite simple for her, the only tell-tale sign of her mixed upbringing being the slight point that graced the tip of her ears. Because of this, she was free to roam the markets and city streets. Though the threat may not have been as imminent as her parents believed, her sisters were always accompanied for the solace of knowing their blood was safe far outweighed the solace of their freedom. Her sisters did not mind as they were far from interested in adventure and risk and instead preferred to learn ladylike tasks such as sewing or baking. While their daydreams revolved around their future husbands and homes, Valeraine longed for a story to be unrivaled... and that story she would have.

Her love for astrology began when she set eyes on the Atheneum Arcaneum. The art of the cards called for her, and she begged her father to allow her to become a student. Though he was cautious towards the idea at first, he eventually gave into his little girl, and Valeraine found a tutor willing to teach her young mind. She studied beneath the man for years, learning predictions and magicks. When she proved to be proficient, she was allowed to dabble in the Sharlayan form of the art in secret. Before long, she excelled at all she had been taught. It was no longer just a hobby for her; it became a lifestyle, a religion, and a comfort.

Puberty had graced her with a womanly body and a beautiful face to match, and before she even knew what was happening, Valeraine blossomed into a fine young woman. Local men had begun to notice her much at the dismay of her father, but she was headstrong and determined to fulfill her cravings for adventure and waved her suitors aside like flies. Her sisters, on the other hand, had different plans. Her older sister, Colette, married into a respectable family despite her heritage and was welcomed with open arms. Adriene, the middle child, had eloped with a heretic. The family did not speak of her for fear of branding her as a criminal and much preferred to refer to her as estranged. They exchanged letters in secret when the opportunity arose, but for all intensive purposes, she was simply gone. Valeraine, though very much devout to her Ishgardian alignment, was close with Adriene most of all, and their bond remained unsevered by the law.

Seventh Umbral Era
Adulthood
The Calamity failed to crush her spirits. Once her family and city picked up the broken pieces of their lives, Valeraine went forth with her life just as she had planned. The cards meant more to her than ever, and she looked to their predictions as others looked to Halone in prayer. Each reading, every fortune brought her closer to her calling... Willem included.

Willem was a dragoon, a noble man of a respectable upbringing. He was handsome and kind and though she had no room for a great love in her life, their bond was kindled by romance and excitement until the heat erupted into full flame. For a long while, Valeraine forgot about her affinity for astrology. She longed to please the man she loved, and before she could even wrap her head around the decision, she longed to fight by his side for their countrymen. With a new dragon attack by the hour, it was far from difficult for her to find a lance to wield and the strength to do the deed. Side by side, the couple defended their homeland and secured Valeraine the same title as her better half.

Life was good for a few years. The two had married humbly with the grace of Halone, and they often jested of a future in the countryside. When they weren't off to war, they were tangled in each others' arms. Valeraine was happy in every sense of the word, and nothing could have ruined her newfound joy.

Her spiral into darkness began as a dusting of snowflakes and soon buried her with the force of an avalanche. Not unlike the dragons that plagued the skies, heretics were as prominent a problem as their winged foes. The attacks began to climb in numbers, and arrests were as common as a cold. Valeraine feared every day that Adriene would be among those captured, but she had failed to prepare herself for when that day finally came.

When she saw her sister in chains, she lost all the strength she had and became a heap of cries for mercy and forgiveness. Her voice fell on deaf ears just as easily as the sword fell upon Adriene's neck.

Willem consoled her as best as he could, but it did little to comfort Valeraine. Not only was her best friend gone to the world, the secret her family fought so hard to keep was now under scrutiny: Adriene was a heretic supporter so what was stopping the rest of her bloodline? They were questioned and judged for their false crimes, adding more weight to the burdens Valeraine bore.

Just as she was coming to terms with her loss, the world grew a little darker. Willem and her were on their way home, doing their best to stay strong during their time of sorrow, when they were attacked. She was thrown to the ground, kicked and beaten. They screamed "Heretic!" as they bruised her broken body, unafraid of whatever consequences might follow their deed. Willem tried to stop them, shoving them off as though they were hungry wolves, but it was for not. They gutted him like a sheep, and Valeraine was forced to watch with blurred vision. They were not strangers. They were not vagrants. They were dragoons. The same men she swore her oath with. The very people she trusted with her life.

They left her there to rot. Scarred in every sense of the word, she crawled her way home. Her parents did the best they could to keep her safe, but the damage had already been done. Fearing they would meet the same fate, she fled as soon as her wounds allowed it. With only the clothes on her back, her deck of cards, and her lance, Valeraine made her way to Gridania under the cover of snowfall and darkness.

In Recent Times
Moving Forward
After reaching Gridania, Valeraine changed her name and appearance. She shed the skin of who she once was and became someone new. She bartered and begged to survive. The merchant skills her father had taught her had come in handy, and once she had reached a comfortable leveling of living, she found a secluded cottage in the Shroud. Valeraine learned minor white magic from the conjurers in the city and nursed her body and portions of her mind back to health. While not perfect, her bond with nature helped her become a novice healer and to this day, she uses what she had and continues to learn to help those who seek her gifts. Along with her natural cures, she is sought for her card readings. Much of Valeraine's survivor's guilt stems from the cards themselves: before meeting Willem, a personal reading showed her a future of deceit, misfortune, and terrible loss. Had she headed her fate, perhaps Willem would still be by her side. Had she stuck true to her talent, she could have been free from her demons. Thanks to her stubbornness and lust, she lost everything she had ever known. She holds the cards as dear as one would hold a deity and seeks to spare others the same pain that befell her.

While she is healing the best way she knows how, she is also a melting pot of repressed hatred and insecurities. Valeraine has yet to come to terms with her past and suffers from multiple mental illnesses from the trauma and lack of support. Because her inner wounds are still fresh, she has difficulty deciphering her delusions from reality. While she is not an immediate threat, there is still the possibility that she could lose herself in her hallucinations and lash out. She is completely and utterly alone in the world aside from the people she meets in passing and is left alone to wallow in her self-pity and desire for revenge.

Disliking staying stationary for too long, Valeraine travels from city-state to city-state offering her services. She is careful in her concealment of her past but still fears that her assailants will locate her and thus keeps personal information to herself. As far as the world knows, she is no more than a gypsy fortune-teller. When alone, she is conjuring plans to avenge her dead lover. Though the act is still far off, she is constantly preparing herself and will not be satisfied until the deed is done.

RP Limits
I like to consider myself a flexible player who is willing to commit to a number of different types of scenes and role-play scenarios, but even I have my limits. If something is on the play list, assume it means yes, as long as it's within the context of the current play or ongoing plot. No's are typically a hard no, and it means don't ask.

RP Hooks
While the below is by no means comprehensive, it's a kind of spring board for walk-up RP. Longer plots that are meant to run for more than a few quick RP's, please feel free to send me a tell so we can work out a good reason for our characters to get to know one another. I'm always looking for RP, unless I'm actively spamming PvE content.

Player Note
There is a lot of information on this character wiki, but it is by no means completely comprehensive. There are chunks of backstory that are left intentionally vague so that details can be later added as developed through creative writing or in role-play revelation. Feel free to use Common or Uncommon rumors freely, if you want to use a Rare Rumor as a plot hook or to spark RP, I would ask that you send me a tell first, to make certain it's alright.

Tropes & Explanations
A trope is a convention or device that is often found in creative works. In this case, the tropes below describe my character either in part, or as a whole. Their background, personality, appearance, etc, most of them can be described in the tropes below.
Trope Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés.
