Appearance & Personality
Sumari is a bright young woman with a positive outlook on life despite what she has experienced in the past. Her silver hair is kept in dreads, and her blue eyes shine with an inner light of intelligence. She is petite in build and, while not out of shape by any means, she has the physical build of someone who lets magic (or her brother) handle most of the heavy lifting. She loves intelligent conversation, but has no patience for boring people. She has a wild imagination, and often gets lost in her own stories and fabrications.
Biography
Sumari and her brother, Pyha'to, were both born and raised in the secret underground enclave of the Dusk Dancers. The Dusk Dancers was a group of rogues that operated independently of any of the larger thieves guilds based out of the three major Eorzean city-states. Their existence was tolerated due to their altruistic nature – their mission was to help anyone who came to them with problems which were too complicated to be handled by members of any local authorities.
Their mother and father had an open relationship with each other. When Sumari and Pyha'to were just babies, they were introduced to their half-sister, L'anya Kharja, who was the result of their father falling for a Seeker woman who was part of a more traditional Seeker tribe. L'tarra Khoran had to keep her visits to their group a secret, and her daughter was named in a traditional Seeker fashion, as she had to maintain the ruse that the baby's father was L'kharja Nunh, a man with influence within her tribe. Though visits were less than frequent, Sumari and Pyha'to accepted L'anya as their sibling and, as they grew older, the three played together whenever L'tarra brought little L'anya to visit.
Magical talent was seemingly absent in their family's bloodline on both sides of the family. Pyha'to and L'anya likewise showed no sign of mystical affinity, and everyone was certain that all three children would continue the family legacy. However, Sumari manifested her gifts at an early age, much to the surprise of everyone. Not only did she have a magical gift, but she had quite a strong innate talent. She was always accidentally setting something on fire, much to the delight of her half-sister, L'anya.
While her brother honed his martial skills on the practice fields, Sumari was instead inducted into the small cloister of mages that the Dusk Dancers kept in their enclave. She soon learned to direct and shape her magical energies, and discovered that she had a special affinity for destruction. Sumari also discovered that she enjoyed learning how things worked. In her spare time she often worked with the Dusk Dancer Engineering Corps, and helped to take things apart and put them back together again.
But her happy life within the enclave was soon to change. L'kharja Nunh soon discovered that L'tarra had been deceiving him about L'anya's origins. When he learned about the Dusk Dancers, and that L'anya's true father was one of their lieutenants, he couldn't let the insult stand. Accompanied by a group of assassins, he swept through the enclave, bringing murder and destruction in his wake. Hanji'a and Pyha fought to keep their children safe, but they were each slain by L'kharja. Sumari and Pyha'to managed to escape, with L'anya in tow, but with the assassins right on their heels. As they neared the surface and it was clear that they were about to be overtaken, Pyha'to turned and stood fast, ready to buy Sumari and L'anya time to escape. Sumari refused to abandon her twin at first, but when she saw that L'anya wouldn't flee without her, she was left with no choice but to leave.
They fled into the forest, but Pyha'to's sacrifice hadn't given them much breathing room. They could hear the assassins closing in. The ground gave way beneath L'anya's feet and she tumbled down a steep embankment. Sumari couldn't catch her in time, and knew that if she went after her, they would both be overtaken. She stopped long enough to spot the assassins, sent a torrent of flame towards them, then took off in another direction in the hopes of leading them away from her half-sister.
The gambit worked and the assassins followed her through the forest. After an extended game of cat and mouse, she finally managed to evade her pursuers. She returned to search for L'anya but, as she closed in on where she'd last spotted her, she came across the mortally wounded form of L'kharja Nunh making his way through the forest. She confronted him, and he presented her with his bloody weapon, told her that he'd just killed her sister. Rage built up inside her and she was about to incinerate the vindictive nunh, when she heard his men approaching. Left with little choice, she fled back into the forest. After some time had passed, she stealthily returned to the caves to search for survivors. Her parents were dead, as was everyone she had ever known. Sumari was about to give in to despair when, as she crossed a bridge leading towards the cavern's exit, she heard the muffled sounds of labored breathing coming from below. Sumari climbed down into the chasm beneath the bridge, and she discovered that Pyha'to was severely wounded, but still alive.
She managed to rig up a harness and help Pyha'to out of the chasm. He suggested that they return to bury the bodies, but Sumari reasoned that L'kharja likely had men stationed to watch the enclave, and there was no way that they could remove that many bodies without drawing attention to themselves. They fled to the city-state of Gridania, and she looked after her twin while he recovered from his wounds. Once he was well again, they decided they needed a plan. They had very little coin to their name, which meant they needed to figure out a way to earn more. Sumari spotted a notice on a nearby board which listed escaped criminals in the area. With her brother's tracking skills and martial prowess and her own mystical talent, she reasoned that it would be an easy thing to track some of them down. They became bounty hunters, a career which wound up making them some useful contacts. Although their past was behind them, Sumari and Pyha'to vowed to find L'kharja Nunh and bring him to justice – one way or the other.
