Alex was born to Bianca and Conrad "Kurt" Sauveterre, a scholar couple from Sharlayan. The family traveled all around the world thanks to the couple's studies into the aether and it's potential uses. As soon as she could walk and talk her parents enrolled her into one of Sharlayan's learning academies. Her parents were often off studying aetheric phenomena so Alex stayed with her grandfather, Alexanteri, for whom she was named after. She loved him and he happily taught her all he could of alchemy and she was eager to gobble up all that he could teach her including some magic.
Most of her communication with her parents was in the form of letters from them as they treaked across the globe in their studies. She hadn't seen them in nearly a decade when her grandfather received a missive, they were in the northern in Rhotano Sea and were in need of Alexanteri's expertise. He decided to send Alex to help them. She was one of his top students though not his best, he saw this as an opportunity for Alex to reconnect with her parents. Alexanteri chartered her passage on a Lominsan ship, the Dawnchaser, which had been running supplies for a local merchant.
It was on board that she first met the LeClair's, Geoffroy was the captain, his wife Remy was their navigator, and their twin daughters Sophie and Zoe who were around her age. The trip was long but it gave her time to make friends with the twin sisters and the crew of the Dawnchaser, even getting to fire her first firearm. The trip was also the start of her love affair with the ocean and sailing. When the ship landed it was not the tearful family family reunion that Alex was hoping for. Her parents were diappointed that Alexanteri did not come in person and dismissed her. She was eager to prove her worth and instead of leaving Alex did exactly what her parents needed her grandfather for.
Impressed, her parents let her stay as they needed more work done. Alex however needed more supplies and asked the LeClair's if perhaps she could bring the needed supplies to her. They agreed as they needed to come near where her parents had set up their research camp on their next trip in a little over a moon's time. Alex, in the interim, made do with what she had on hand and her parent's supplies until the LeClairs returned. A few suns came and went and soldiers from the Garlean Empire arrived at the island. They too had come to study the strange aether in the area and came across the research camp.
While the Sauveterre's motives were academic, the Garleans were studying the strange aether flows in hopes of turning it into some form of weapon. He mother hide away their most important research to prevent its theft at the hands of the soldiers. Once the soldiers discovered them, they demanded the family hand over their research. The family refused not wanting to give the soldiers something that could be used to harm people. Frustrated, the commander ordered his men to execute the family and take everything at the camp.
Alex survived the attack with a sword wound to the gut and a slash to the face. She kept herself from succumbing to her woulds thanks to what little healing magic she knew. It was 8 suns before help arrived for the newly orphaned girl. The Dawnchaser arrived to drop off Alex's supplies and found the horrifying scene. The LeClair's took Alex back to port where she recovered from her injuries. While she was in recovery she wrote to her grandfather so that he knew she was alive. This however led the Garleans right to her.
Naevio Sas Quintilicus received word of the letter, his unit was the ones that had killed Alex's parents and left her for dead. They had taken many of the Sauveterre's journals but found the research was encoded. Believing she may have the cipher to decode the research, he sent infiltrators to capture her. Remy, Sophie, and Zoe were visiting Alex when the infiltrators arrived in the ensuing fight it appeared that Alex was killed after being knocked off one of Limsa Lominsa's many bridges. This was however an illusion worked by Zoe. The Garleans left as the Yellowjackets were arriving to the scene with Remy, the twins, and Alex escaping to the Dawnchaser. Both Alex and the LeClair's worried that if the Garleans discovered she was still alive they may try to recapture her again so she took the surname LeClair to hide.
She spent several years as a member of the Dawnchaser crew learning how to sail, handle firearms, and also learning hand to hand brawling to participate in the boxing matches that were sometimes held on the main deck of the ship. She still continued her her alchemy studies in her free time though after what happened in Limsa she avoided contact with her family back in Sharlayan to protect them and maintain her new identity. Sometime after Alex turned 19, the Dawnchaser sailed into a massive storm out while making a cargo run and caused the ship to crash into jagged rocks near the shores causing the Dawnchaser to sink. Alex, Sophie, Zoe, and a half dozen crew members survived but Geoffroy and Remy were not as lucky.
As the war with the Garlean Empire escalated the Maelstrom approached Alex and the twins to join the war effort. Alex was concerned that joining might blow her cover but the threat of the Empire was too great for her to ignore. They were all present at the Battle of Carteneau. On the final day of the descent of the lesser moon of Dalamud, they were in the thick of the fighting. Alex tried to get her sisters to retreat but communications were down. The might of the elder primal took the last of her family from her on that day. She awoke almost a moon later back in Limsa Lominsa being treated for her injuries. She had earned the nickname 'the cursed' as most of her squadron mates knew of what had happened to her (adopted) parents. With the war seemingly over for now, Alex opted to retire with three of her squadron mates joining her, a Roe woman named Terra 'Vatra' Lily, a Miqo'te man named B'ergen 'Berg' Tia, and a Lalafel male named Makani Zakani.
