General Information

Ashlyn Dragonhead Chocobo.jpg

Ashlyn Orben is a knight of House Fortemps, stationed at Camp Dragonhead.

She left her tribe on the Azim Steppe for the lands of Northern Eorzea, after the Garlean expansion. Having made a life for herself on the borders of Ishgard as a mender, a showing of fortitude during a dragon attack found her accepted into the ranks of House Fortemps. While she spends much of her time at Dragonhead, she maintains an apartment in the Firmament, and enjoys the opportunities to travel to Limsa Lominsa offered by recently reopened borders.

Ashlyn Fortemps Manor.jpg

Ashlyn is a 'commoner' by Ishgardian standards. Though respectful of noble traditions, she often struggles with formalities and relies on her friendliness and willingness to help to get by. When invited to Fortemps Manor on occasion, she'll often sit aside from the main festivities and enjoy the company of staff and fellow knights, though Emmanellain will often include her along his tour of any visiting women.

Philosophy & Ideals

Ashlyn is a devout believer in Halone, and attends church regularly. She struggles reconciling this with her understanding of the Auri Dusk Mother, and assumes the Dusk Mother is the Xaela understanding of Halone. This of course does not always mesh well.

Being an immigrant herself, Ashlyn is thrilled that Ishgard's borders have been reopened. She appreciates the efforts of Houses Fortemps and Haillenarte in creating a new way forward for the nation, and is an admirer of Ser Aymeric and his welcoming policies. Though she is angry with many of the actions of the Church - especially those which have recently come to light - she attributes them to evil men who have corrupted the institution of the Holy See, and desperately supports significant reform.

Early Life

Childhood

Boragchin was born to the Xaela Orben tribe along the Great River, in 1548. She is the second child of five that she is aware of.

‘Agchin’ spent most of her early years in constant travel along the River, learning and eventually excelling at maintaining the tribe’s reed-and-scale rafts. Her family only occasionally met with other tribes and traders, mostly during the rare visit to Reunion. During one such visit in 1552, Agchin learned of the Garlean invasion of Doma. The displacement of other Au Ra and the threat of the Empire quickly broadened her world view.

She would then begin volunteering for travel to Reunion often, and gained a much broader understanding of the world than that of family and friends. This included learning of Au Ra fleeing to the northern regions of Eorzea, some returning with incredible tales. By 1562 at a young 14 years old, Agchin made the decision to abandon the nomadic life, and her family, booking passage on a trading vessel bound for Coerthas.

Adolescence

When Agchin arrived in the Western Highlands she quickly made way for Camp Riversmeet, having learned of the Temple Knights’ garrison which provided aide to travelers and traders. Had she arrived only a few years earlier, she would have been slaughtered on site – and though the Ishgardians remained cautious of Au Ra, it was by now understood that she and hers were not dragons. Her relative cuteness as a child, as well as her willingness to put her skills towards maintaining Temple and traveler equipment, served her well.

She spent the next seven years in the Highlands earning a living as a reliable mender, including expanding her skills into metalwork. Now calling herself ‘Ashlyn’ – a more palatable version of her name to the Ishgardian tongue – she made enough to secure meagre lodging at Falcon’s Nest and a relatively comfortable life.

Adulthood

In 1569, a dragon attacked Lord Haurchefant's convoy, which Ashlyn was repairing outside of Falcon's Nest. In the chaos as a knight fell wounded beside her, she picked up his sword and shield. Though both were made for an Elezen, she was able to stand her ground with the oversized equipment, blocking a swipe by a mid-sized dragon and striking a light blow to another's wing. Her effort at the battle - and her willingness to remain after the attack to repair the wagons - were noted by Haurchefant. He offered the 21 year old a blacksmithing job at Camp Dragonhead, as well as a chance to train as a knight on the side.

Ashlyn Blacksmith.jpg

By the time of the Calamity in 1572, Ashlyn was in active service as a novice knight of House Fortemps at Dragonhead, and was gaining respect as a local mender. Her services were required when the climate throughout Coerthas changed drastically, as Dragonhead required significant upgrades to continue operations in the snow.

Ashlyn recognized how lucky she was, having her post at Dragonhead firmly established instead of being left jobless and homeless when Falcon's Nest and the surrounding economic activity was abandoned to the cold. To make amends, she made every effort to support her friends in the Brume with gil and supplies.

Recent Times

Though tempted to return to Falcon's Nest as the area was rebuilt in recent years, Ashlyn chose instead to purchase an apartment in the Firmament district. Meanwhile, she continues her employment at Camp Dragonhead, protecting and securing activity along the region's new trade routes - and repairing the equipment of travelers who are ill-prepared for the snow.

The end of the Dragonsong War offers her the chance to travel in her off-time, leading her to visit the ships of Limsa Lominsa quite regularly.
