She is never filthy, but she is sometimes dirty after a day of hard work, and her calloused, scarred hands might be permanently stained. Brave was born in Ala Mhigo to Hellsguard parents a few years before the Garlean occupation. She is unsure of the actual year: she was old enough to retain only a few vague memories of the city, but nothing more. She was evacuated with a number of Hyur refugees just as the Garleans began their march into Ala Mhigo. Her parents did not leave with her.

She was under the care of Hyur couple for her early childhood, along with a number of refugee children of all races. One of her foster parents was a librarian in Ala Mhigo, which led to Brave's love of reading. The strain of supporting so many refugees eventually overcame her foster parents, and they were forced to send off those capable of working. Brave had the fortune of finding a Sapphire Avenue merchant who had need of a laborer. Her size and strength suited the merchant despite her age, and he hired her for a handful of gil per week and few square fulms of warehouse floor space to call home. As she grew to her full size, she was employed as protection for market stalls or caravans in addition to general labor. She continues this work to this day.
