Chani Maor [ch-A-nEE • ma'or] is a refugee of the Twelveswood who migrated with the remnants of her clan during the Calamity. The have since come to call Thanalan "home", travelling the dunes and skirting urban areas for supplies and work. To fund her family, Chani offers herself as a hireling - putting particular emphasis on the deftness of her sticky fingers. Above all else, she seeks to protect what she cherishes and one day return to the woodland world. Some remarkable shinies wouldn't hurt either.

Her most notable characteristic would be her face: kohl-lined eyes, large and expressive, set in pixie-like features and punctuated with an imp's smile. Tapering crescents of blue-purple curve along her cheeks and profile, a tribute to the Lover and mark of her heritage. Of the body, she is petite in stature but thickly figured: long, muscular legs, boxy hips, a short torso and lean, developed arms. A sinewy shape, strong but small. Her hair, once long and untamed, has been cropped short to combat Ul'dah's unyielding heat. She likes to style it tastefully mussy and adorn it with various baubles, if possible. When it comes to attire, Chani exhibits a preference for shawls and scarves, tight dancer tunics and loose genie pants or long skirts. She tends to fashion her bottoms with lace-up sides to allow freedom of flow when entertaining. She considers her clothing choice to be both practical and cute.

~ Chani partners femininity with brawn well.

Story Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ

The Light-Givers

Settled in the Twelveswood, the nomadic clan consisted of both immediate and extended blood. They were mostly recluses with a strong sense of family, custom and a preference for freelance work. Each tribe-member was "expected to be of use" and apprentice under a Mamha, perpetuating and honing a specific skill for survival (though the young would pick up a general understanding of all from the teachers).

Great-Mamha Sia, Story-teller and Ritualist
Mamha Vica, Protector
Mamha Euna, Herbalist
Mamha Mira, Magician
Mamha Nea, Tinker
Mamha Risa, Thief

Stories and song were vital and sacred to the group, and their culture was rooted in oral tradition. Each Maor was raised to express themselves bodily, participating in Great-Sia's stories with physical representations and joining in harmonious, drum-propelled dance. Nea was responsible for their instruments and elaborate costumes, Risa was in charge of teaching dexterity and flow to the children and Mira, how to incorporate (their own version of) thaumaturgy in self-expression, higher understanding and prayer. So the Maors never saw themselves under "some strict family code," rather... they had fun. And they were family - the heartbeat of many meeting as one. For an onlooker within the Twelve's labyrinth, they would see explosive, vibrant orbs of light dancing among the trees accompanied by whooping, drumming, and laughter.

However, this fundamental characteristic of their clan-life was not meant for outsiders, and they were under the rule that they would not present their "light-filled spirits" to strangers. Maors normally only met foreigners quarterly (sooner, if necessary) when they visited the Shroud's hamlets or city to barter their services (and why the apprenticeship between Mamha and young was required). A tent for trade would be constructed on the outskirts of the town with wares that included: crafts (instruments like rattles and drums, wood carvings like masks and pipes), plants (be it for diet, medicinal value or other), fish, spells, as well as services such as: repairs, palmistry, fortune-telling (tarot cards), and clandestine procurement (thievery). These glimpses of an alternate reality were also the tribe's opportunity to mix blood and leave with the conception of new Maors.

Growing Up

Daughter to Euna and pupil of Risa, Chani was raised a thief. In fact, she fashioned the bell that taught her how to steal noiselessly (that lesson is classified) into a pendant - a sort of trophy. Among her general ability to rob a guy blind, she also picked up an understanding of plantlife from her mother (though their words for things won't match up with common terminology). As clanmates fell to illness or wounds, she gained an incentive for mastering healing remedies (but I wouldn't actually call her a master). A phrase she often heard, "allow Mother Nature to run her course", became synonymous with "bend over and accept defeat", and while staring into the fading gazes of dying comrades, child and adult alike, Chani made a secret pledge to someday beat Mother Nature at her own cruel game. The teachings of the other Mamha's also gave her a skill or two more, but none were as prominent. She could whittle wood and sew.

As every Maor was nurtured to know, life was both an illusion and spiritual journey. Chani was no exception, partaking in the rituals that pledged this and expanding her consciousness through traditional activities. She loved to dance and sing alongside her kin, light the night with her fingers, smudge the faces of her family, blow wish-filled smoke into the wind, drink the tea and ponder the unseen and question the answer-less for hours, braid flowers into her sisters' hair... If asked now, she'd do anything to re-grasp the times that had changed.

A Realm Reborn

Struggling with poverty, the Fhae currently find themselves inhabiting the slums. It has been voiced that they should return to their woodland home, but the remaining Mamhas have decided that it is safest to stay within city walls - and so they have stayed. WIP.
