Leonnaux Altoix
Leon is 6’2 and rather thin; one can tell at a glance that he’s not used to doing a whole lot of heavy-lifting unless his books count. Fair and warm in complexion compared to his Duskwight kin, it’s easy to mistake him for a Wildwood, and well… To be fair, he wouldn’t correct anyone on it. His hair is black and, while he doesn’t seem to bother to style it, one can tell if they were to ruffle it (note: do not attempt) that he takes care of it insofar that he’s not a greasy nerd at least, even if he is a massive nerd as evidenced by the round spectacles that he wears. His eyes are blue and his brows are almost always somewhat furrowed for some reason – either because he’s trying to think or because he’s being a grouch or because he didn’t heed his parents’ warnings and his face just got stuck that way. Hidden behind his bangs is a thin, faint scar from his hairline to the inside corner of one eyebrow.
Generally, he wears a simple, gray mage robe over a pleated white shirt with matching black leather half-gloves that reach up to his elbow and black leather boots reaching up to his thighs (Brand-new Mage Set). A pair of earrings crafted from horn hang from his ears, and he wears a single ring carved out of bone -- though which hand and finger it's on varies from day to day since he doesn't particularly pay much mind to it. The grimoire he carries has a cover made out of blue leather, impressed with various metallic designs. Within the grimoire are designs and calculations necessary for performing arcanima alongside hastily-scribbled notes in Leon's own horrible handwriting, and some of the pages appear to be stained.
Born in the Shroud, this Duskwight always had a bit of trouble coming to terms with his lot in life; his father left his mother when he was still young, and so he was raised primarily by his mother and his older brother. He took to academic pursuits early, his mother teaching him to read and do basic arithmetic and his brother teaching him the very basics of archery, although this was never a discipline he readily pursued. He came to find that he was blessed with the Echo at the age of thirteen, but he didn’t and still doesn’t know precisely what it is; his first few visions came in rapid succession and rendered him ill for the next few days, but to this day he hasn’t had an episode as bad.
His passion for academics became less of a passion and more of an obsession as he grew older and more and more of his reading material came to involve the manipulation of aether – which he found he was rather adept at in time due to his focused study of arcanima, cumulating in him teaching himself how to conjure a Carbuncle companion, though it was markedly disobedient – and the different afflictions that one can suffer having to do with their aether. Through these studies, he came to the conclusion that he had some form of aether sickness and became determined to find a way to cure it or, if he must live with it and his case didn’t prove fatal, learn to wield it to his advantage. Through his study of alchemy (which started as a passing fancy, but he rapidly became proficient at… Well, insofar as he hasn’t killed himself with his concoction yet, and he gets the basic gist of the principles…), he hopes to unlock the ability to have one of his visions on demand so that he can study his ‘sickness’ more closely, and through his study of aether and Arcanum, he seeks to find a way to wield it. Through both, he seeks a cure.
His family did not take well to this mounting obsession, however, and continued to smother him as they grew more and more concerned for his well-being. His journals were often thumbed through and some of his more questionable entries were removed while he was asleep or otherwise not studying, most notably the entries making note of his own mortality and many of the entries concerning his visions. While they appeared outwardly supportive, they attempted, for the most part, to quell Leon’s obsession with his condition by destroying his notes and making light of his accomplishments, believing that if he became discouraged then he would fall back in line with how Duskwights were ‘supposed’ to be and, therefore, would create less trouble for himself and his family in the long run. However, Leon took notice of this and took his studying elsewhere, but despite passing for Wildwood due to his fair complexion, he came to be regarded as a bit of a recluse. His frenzied ramblings did not help matters, and in his passion he neglected to make sure that he didn’t come off as a complete nutjob.
Eventually, after years of saving small change and after forcing himself to take up some menial jobs, he saved enough money to leave home. He did so without notice and of his nonessential worldly possessions he took with him only his most recent grimoire and some varied notes that he deemed to be important.
Nowadays, Leon is more closed-off in regards to his studies and his personal affairs, although he remains rather excitable at times and, once one gets him started talking about one of his various studies or interests, it can become difficult to keep up with him or get him to stop. On the surface he seems overly enthusiastic at best and obsessive at worst, to the point where the well-being of himself and those he keeps close to him could be called into question. By the same token, he comes off as self-absorbed at best and borderline narcissistic at worst, and occasionally his tone of voice could be read as somewhat condescending... Though he swears he doesn't mean it.

■ Arcanima: Leon taught himself arcanima up to the point of summoning, but never took any special interest in any of the branches that did not directly have anything to do with aetherial aspects and manipulation, so he kind of just skimmed the parts that would have taught him about Bio, Miasma, and Physick. After being taken under P'ianthe Aliapoh's wing, he learned the techniques of Aetherflow and Energy Drain. ■ Alchemy: Though not incredibly advanced in the art, Leon considers himself proficient with alchemy insofar as he hasn’t killed anyone with his concoctions yet. They do, however, occasionally prove that they have no effect at all or, worse, have some rather painful side-effects. However, when they work, they work well; he's a bit stingy with his recipes, but he's managed to make some potions that numb pain, improve one's focus, and help one stay awake for longer (albeit with a harder crash than just ordering black coffee would). He's also managed to formulate some super-conductive enchanted ink by adding miscellaneous ingredients to the finished product, or by changing the base liquid. ■ Echo: Leon has the Echo, but he is not a Warrior of Light in any capacity and he doesn’t even know what his Echo is. For the most part, at the moment, it just occasionally gives him visions, which he’s quick to document for the most part. He has no idea that the Echo takes different forms for each holder of it for the most part, so he hasn’t looked too much into that part… He studies his Echo (‘aether sickness’) primarily by pushing his aetherial, physical, emotional, and mental limits. So far, he's verified very few of his visions, mostly because he doesn't have the means to verify many of them either because they're so vague or aren't connected to him personally in any meaningful capacity.
