Qaratai Hotgo (Qara Hotgo in-game) is a young courier from an Au Ra Xaela tribe that is all but destroyed. When she lived in Othard, she was responsible for delivering important messages and parcels for her tribe. She would journey on horseback to other tribes, and even act as messenger on the battlefield. She rarely took part in direct warfare, but has survived a few skirmishes with those who wanted to stop her deliveries.

In the present, Qara has become a vigilante. Her combat arts are now far more complicated than the swordplay taught to her by her father - fitting for a complicated land. She must walk the fine line between hero and criminal as she serves to act as a free warrior for the people who have few or none to fight for them.

General Appearance

Qara has skin tanned by the sun with hair darker than her scales and horns. Blue highlights in her hair display her spirit color, and her deep red eyes have contrasting blue limbal rings. She is a bit on the tall side for female Au Ra, but still short compared to the peoples of other races. Scales are abundant on her neck and chin. However, the skin on her face can sometimes be seen with markings and smudges of paint. She preserves her tribe's cultural practice of displaying her moods with the use of colorful face paints; each color having a different meaning.

Important Trinkets

A violet-bladed short-sword made by the Kagon tribe. Either kept on Horsebird or Qara's belt.

A Mythrite Zweihander rewarded to Qara after she delivered a message from Whitebrim Fort to Dragonhead during the Dravanian siege of The Steps of Faith.

A bracelet made of polished bone segmented into four parts. At its center rests a purple, lightning-attuned crystal within a simple gold frame. It is said that the materials of bone and gold made excellent catalysts to help channel one's aether. A starlight gift from Zanzan to Qara to aid her in her magical training. Worn to this day.

A silver chain that is made with an eastern design. The main pendant itself has a gold sun-like frame with blue hues that weaved along its edges like ribbons. Within the frame was an obsidian black backdrop with fragments of Moonstones shaped into small circles as stars. The indentations inside gives the illusion of the stars and the sky moving as one would see it. There is a second hidden feature. Held up to a full moon, the pendant will expose a hidden message for any who can see.

"For Qara Hotgo and Zanzan Yanzan. May their love be as endless as the night sky itself." Crafted by Arala Makeo.

Qara is often shy and quiet despite her job. The most vibrant displays of emotions from the girl are often in the form of her face paint she uses to display her moods. Her reserved personality hides an inner curiosity and desire to be social. She will often find awkward ways to force herself into a social situations -if- she feels safe doing so. In the instance someone gets her to open up, she can be quite talkative and friendly.

Qara's Colors

Different colors of face paint have different meanings for Qara. Once someone gets to know her, they'll begin to see the colors almost like another form of body-language. Qara's family's paint color definitions may be different from other family units that lived in the Hotgo tribe.

Colors
Blue
Qara's spirit color. She wears it when she feels her best, and most confident.
Black
Her rage color. She wears it when preparing to fight, or when she gets angry.
Red
Her love color. Be it platonic or romantic, she'll wear red when her passion grows strong.
Green
Her joy color. Not to be confused with blue, green is applied when she feels innocent happiness.
Yellow
Her sadness color. She doesn't like to show her sadness despite what she was taught, but she'll often wear it to help show sympathy for the suffering of another.
Purple
This color is righteous fury. Her warpaint when on the job.
White
Her diplomatic color. She wears this to make amends, or show that she will remain peaceful.
Pink
Her humility color. She wears it to show when she is embarrassed, or bashful.
Orange
Her fear color. She only really wears it as a display of caution to others. Not all instances of fear will have her painting her face orange.
Silver
Hope and Will. In remembrance of Ucugen Hotgo who tragically died soon after meeting Qara. Silver was Ucugen's spirit color.

Because paint colors change shades due to drying and whether, she does not use different shades of the same colors to represent variations of her general emotions. Instead, she usually marks the strongest emotions she is feeling in a general sense. However, different color combinations can give greater detail to her emotional state, but it is less common for her to use more than one color at a time.

Combination examples
Blue and Purple
Confidence and Fury. The Warriors of Qara's family would wear this combination of colors when in a battle they prepared for. Qara wears the combination in battle often.
Red and Pink
Love and Humility. Often worn in rare instances of public displays of great affection; such as a marriage ceremony.
Green and Yellow
Hope and Sympathy. Worn when acting as council for another. Often used in funerals and remembrance ceremonies.
Red and Purple
..."Greatma use to say: the best part of a couple's fight is making up..."

More combinations exists, and more will be defined in the future.

The marks of paint Qara makes are simple smudges or lines. Only in ceremonies or special occasions does she make coherent symbols on her face using the paints.

The paints do not replace facial expressions or body language for her. They are used for emotional honesty and clarity as taught by her culture.

Qara's swordplay is a mix of Xaela and Ishgardian martial arts.

Much of the young girl's power is in her Dark Arts; a magic arts that is emotionally complicated, but unlike many others does not require much intellectual study or scholarly work.

PC Rumors (Rumors from the character's of other players)

Shria Kagon: "Qara...? She was a dear friend for many years. I always felt I needed to teach her how to lighten up a little, but her focus on the job at hand was one of the things I loved and miss about her."

Zanzan Yanzan: "Qara... She lost everything dear to her. Yet, here she stands. A passionate and undying fire. She is quite beautiful, yes? What captured my heart, however, was her own. There is not another person I love more than her. What a star she is..."

  • Shria Kagon: "She saved me, protected me and kept me company. I found her again in Eorzea. She is first real friend in this land."
  • Maric Thornharte: "Hero, protector, knight. Trained me to be that too."
  • Zanzan Yanzan: "He's very sweet."
  • Chakha Hotgo: "My sister. I love her... Even if the world doesn't."

Age 1 to 10

Qara was born and raised by her conservative horse-trainer mother, and her rather incorrigible grandmother known as "Great mother" or "Emee". Qara's father was part of a Hotgo war band. He was a Lancer and Swordsman. Life was simple for Qara, and her mother tried to raise her as a "proper" Hotgo woman. Qara's family had no special social status, and were fairly average. Most of her life was spent on the Azim Plains of Othard.

Age 11 to 16

Qara was considered old enough to work, and she chose to be a tribe messenger. Her mother was not pleased, but with the approval of her grandmother who was a respected elder in the tribe, Qara was allowed the job. She became an adept rider, but the solitary work did little to improve her shyness. When tensions built between the Hotgo and Dotharl, a scouting party of Dotharl attempted to capture Qara while she was seeking audience with the Khan of the Kagon tribe. Qara was wounded, but she survived, and the Dotharl were driven off by the Kagon. Shria of the Kagon convinced the Khan to allow Qara to stay for a year while she recovered from a broken leg. Qara was able to return to the Hotgo once the two tribes wandered near enough to each other once more.

Age 17 to present age 21

During one messenger run, the Dotharl made a sudden full-force attack on the Hotgo tribe. When Qara returned, every member of her tribe was dead. She fled towards Doma, and eventually managed to earn passage on a ship to Eorzea. However, she was forced to leave her horse behind. Qara arrived to Eorzea with nothing but rags and a short sword given to her by Shria of the Kagon. She began to focus on learning the language, and managed to become a courier. The lone Qara would spend a year working in Eorzea before she made any real friends.
