A field medic/conjurer during the Battle at Carteneau Flats, he abandoned his unit when Dalamud finally cracked open, ignoring the cries of his fellow soldiers who were injured and unable to move. He chose to search for his sister amidst the chaos in the battlefield and dragged her almost unconscious self to safety. He has carried the guilt of his cowardice ever since and has stopped going outside of his home in Hyrstmill.

It was only when his sister fell sick one day that he was forced to go to Gridania and search for a conjurer to heal her as he believes he can no longer use conjury. Due to being isolated in his room for a long while, the pressure of immersing himself in any crowd caused him immense stress and he lashed out at someone he thought was talking about him. He was imprisoned and given community service for damages but thankfully his sister was attended to and she was on her way to recovery.

His service was to help out at the Greatloam Growery. Thinking him too volatile to handle growing plants, the botanists decided he was better off gathering lumber at Gabineaux's Bower. One day, while delivering lumber to the Oak Atrium, he became fascinated with wood-working and soon asked if he could work there instead. Since then he has been learning and working there, mostly as a carpenter dispatched to repair houses and structures within the Twelveswood.

Sometime after, he and his sister meets a young miqo'te named A'khirho Elil who was wandering the Twelveswood. His sister took quite a liking to this young fellow and offered their home as his temporary residence while he studied conjury at Stillglade Fane. It took a while for Quill to accept a stranger into their house but has since warmed up to him and considers him part of their small family.
