Avos pyr Oryn - The Defector
The result of a short-lived love between a Garlean spy and an Ala Mhigan Duelist, Avos pyr Oryn enjoyed a decade-long military career of guard duty in service to the Empire before he was transferred to the XIIth Legion and deployed to Doma to crush the uprising under the command of Zenos yae Galvus. Nearly three years after the initial conflict, Avos could no longer bear to stay after the horrible crimes he had committed in the Legion's name and escaped. Deserting his post for Radz-at-Han to board a merchant vessel bound for Eorzea, Avos takes little with him save an optimistic outlook on life and the situation in the world at large.

Interests

Likes

  • Avos is an unapologetic flirt, ready to throw down and throw some stranger a compliment just because he can. It's one of his favorite failings, he feels.
  • Food. A rather plain joy, he enjoys any kind of meal, but is always happy to try something new with his friends, and his tastes are as wide as the breadth of the world he has traveled, which is considerable.
  • Avos' favorite place to be is the sea, which helped cement his decision to stay in Limsa Lominsa following landfall. Some of his fondest memories are of those swimming with friends and squad-mates during the warmer days in forever-cold Ilsebard.

Dislikes

  • Bigots. Just as simple, bigotry is something he had to learn to live with growing up in Garlemald as the child of a Pureblood and an Eorzean 'savage'. As such, he is unlike to tolerate it silently.
  • Hot days. Growing up in Ilsebard lent Avos an adaptation towards colder climates, and as such, one would rarely see him in Thanalan, much preferring the comparatively cooler climes of La Noscea.

Favorites

Foods: Pizza, specifically, but any foreign foods are of great interest to him. As it is, foreign dishes often found their way to his table, as they did for many in the capitol.
Drinks: It's something he is not fond of informing people, but he has a love for a creme-laden coffee.
Colors: Dark blue, red, white, green, in that order.

Hobbies

  • Leatherworking. Something his father taught him, which he uses to live between work and create equipment for the Maelstrom.
  • Marksmanship. Use of firearms was part of his training, and it's something he enjoys when he has time.

Appearance

Hair/Fur: Dark blue with red streaks.
Skin: Pale white
Eyes: Cerulean
Height: Five fulm, six ilm
Weight: 150 ponz
Build: Slim, toned

Avos has a softer look about him than one might expect of a Garlean soldier. His cheeks are rounded and full, gently rolling down into a similarly round chin covered with a small, meticulously trimmed beard bespeaking a point of pride in his personal grooming. His eyes are a bright, brilliant sea blue, though his right eye has a long, aged scar running across it vertically. Upon his forehead he sports a black bead tattoo, symbolizing his Garlean heritage, surrounded by a standard painted on every morning. Meanwhile, upon his nose and cheeks rests a light blue tattoo which doesn't symbolize anything, but is merely something he got when he was young and fanciful.
His physique is quite average, though it is quite obvious he keeps up his exercise despite his much easier lifestyle, as evidenced by the tone and firm, but less defined musculature. As well he is quite light, weighing only one hundred-fifty ponz.
Unseen in most outfits is the red jeweled necklace he wears, a memento from his mother, unaware of it's identity as her Red Mage soul crystal. Even more rarely is he seen without some kind of wristlet, cuff, or glove on his left hand, for -unbeknownst to anyone but the other members of his squadron and those privy to 12th Legion secrets- his Samurai soul gem is hewn into his skin at the wrist. The Garleans are not known for their care of their soldiers in the XIIth Legion, and as such took measures to prevent the rare soul gems from being lost, stolen, or otherwise removed from their possession, and thus they experimented with different ideas for keeping the soul gems close at their Samurai's hands, and some methods were more literal than others. The scars of the surgery are long-since faded, but Avos does his best to hide such a grisly sight for both his own sake as well as to prevent those who would steal it from knowing of it's existence.

Biography

Avos' life started in a small village in Gyr Abania, born to one of the famous Crimson Duelists -his mother- and a then-unknown Garlean spy posing as a merchant -his father. His father was in deep cover within Ala Mhigo, sizing up the country for Garlean occupation, but he soon fell for the exotic Miqo'te Red Mage, and before he knew it, he held a small baby boy in his arms. Soon though, his love would meet her end alongside most of the other Duelists as the city was taken. Though the day was won, the Garlean couldn't help but feel it was bought with too heavy a cost. He was left with a boy barely upon his sixth summer, and so they fled back to the mainland, the Garlean's purpose in Ala Mhigo fulfilled. In Ilsebard, the Garlean was given his debriefing and he retired from the spy business, instead going to his old love; leatherworking. With it, he kept himself and his child fed in the capitol, servicing the wealthy and respected.
For Avos, though, the capital was stifling in comparison to the open and untamed cliffs of Gyr Abania. It was this desire for freedom that led him to join a common street gang at the young age of thirteen. His father vehemently disapproved of his new company, and his concern was well-founded: Despite being petty vandals and a minor nuisance, the guard cracked down on them when Avos was sixteen. In the jail he found some semblance of salvation; his father's connections and friends in the high and mighty had found Avos an ultimatum: Imprisonment and heavy fines, or join the military guard. He took the offer, and before he knew it he was back on the streets, though this time he was wearing the heavy black uniform of the Guard.
Avos' time in the guard was good for his character and very soon he had shaped up from a punk thug to a respectable member of society and he was released from his bond to the Guard. Instead of leaving, though, he stayed, and climbed the ranks until he was leading his own squad, a position of great esteem for a non-native. Indeed, his family name led him much credence, as well did the glowing remarks from his Major; in a short time he had turned from a rebellious teen to one of the shining stars of the Guard, even going so far as to attend noble gatherings alongside the Major as representatives of the Guard. There he learned his upper-class demeanor and speech, though he would not stay among the upper class for long, as he had made enemies in his rise. Indeed, though it was behind the curtains and in the shadows, men were conspiring against him, and soon he found himself being transferred to Othard; the Domans had begun an insurrection following the Emperor's death, and a veritable army was being sent to quell the uprising, his squad included. And so they were retrained along with the force of conscripts in the use of lighter armor and weapons found in Doma, someone up above favoring cruel irony in defeating a rebellion with their own traditions. He took to the katana quite well, and along with his squad soon landed upon the shores of Doma.
He was never far from a battle, and in truth he had many firsts there. His first time fighting in an actual war, his first time fighting someone who wasn't a pissed drunkard, his first time killing another person. The ordeal took a toll on him, even as the commander, Zenos Yae Galvus, stormed the field with blood as he outmatched the Domans like a man would children. Even his faith in the Empire was crumbling at this point, the war in Doma adding on from the Calamity visited upon his home continent. True, it did not happen in Gyr Abania, but it was still so close, and Ala Mhigo was not spared damage from the moon's fall, and he feared an extinction campaign may be carried out in Eorzea. He couldn't stomach the idea of participating in something like that, and so he made up his mind. In the dead of night, he stole into the armory of his Castrum, taking his officer revolver and finding his way to the holding gaol, where captives were held pending judgement. Avos knew better: The penalty was always death. He threw open the cages and offered them hope, freeing them into the inky night even as his fellow soldiers came to check on the commotion. There he sealed his desertion and treachery against the nation he loved, gunning the men down. Not giving himself time to dwell on it, he stole into the night, fleeing to Kugane where he snuck aboard a ship bound for Radz-at-Han, and there finding passage into Eorzea. He would do his best to make a difference in a world where he could not only no longer trust the Garlean Military, but was now no doubt being hunted.

Relationships

Romantic Interest, Sexual Interest, Platonic Love, Good Standing, Neutral Standing, Poor Standing

Romantic Interest

No one in particular has caught his eye.

Good Standing

Kadin Harrow. The two met in Aethertide, and after sharing more than a couple drinks, tales of their lives' woes, and a dip in the bay in their skivvies, Avos counts Kadin as one of his few friends in Eorzea.
Sai'juko Whiteraven. Although they only knew each other for a day before the group split, Avos feels he really hit it off with the bite-y Miqo'te, who was nonplussed at the confession of his heritage. He quite enjoys the odd Miqo'te's company... when he isn't being bitten, that is.
Defiant Bride. What started as a good friendship devolved into a bitter feud over a misunderstanding, ending in a duel. After some time as simply coworkers, the two were able to open up more to each other, and repair their broken friendship.

Neutral Standing

Steiner Hart. A Garlean Cyborg that Avos works with, whom Avos has grown fond of. The first person to pet the Miqo'te in many years and not get a fist in return, Avos finds him quite interesting.

Poor Standing

Bridgit Ramsey. What started as a pleasant friendship quickly fell apart when nationalities were exposed. Between the former XIIth Legion Optio and the blind Doman refugee, one might be forgiven for misunderstanding their relationship as strained coworkers, when in reality the two hate each other and even dueled almost to the death. He'll never admit she beat him.
