Appearance
Tall and lithely built, Kian is often regarded as taking more from his midlander mother than his highlander father. He has his father's height but all of his other attributes strongly ring of his mother, much to the aches and pains of those in his family who miss her. His hair, eyes, skin tone and even his cool, resting expression is incredibly similar to hers, though more masculine of course. He is leanly muscled as his penchant for fist fights might dictate, making him a well balanced mix between speed and strength. Despite his rough way of life that has him occasionally sleeping on the ground more often than a bed, Kian is always well kept and neat, keeping his clothing and person in good, presentable condition. Heaven forbid he look pitiable or weak for even the slightest of moments. It is often incredibly hard to notice as Kian has gotten quite good at coping with it with his hearing and confidence level, but Kian's field of vision is only 70% of what it should be, meaning he absolutely cannot see in either his right or left periphery. (( Also. Can I just say. THISHOLYCRAP. kthnx. ))
Personality
Not a candidate for the prize of being the most charming man at the bar, Kian is, nonetheless, not completely unbearable. Known for being prickly, blunt and a little bit rude, Kian has an unintentionally brusque way of speaking that can rub an easily offended or soft skinned personality the wrong way in a hurry, his intentions are generally good and founded in kindness. He's no conversationalist and he likely never will be, but he can generally find something to talk about to pass the time with just about anyone. Always honest, Kian only neglects to say what he thinks when he understands it might be hurtful (which is not always, he's very bad at gauging how a person will react to something), instead opting to say nothing at all. He has a rough, roguish sense of humor that often only he finds funny and is often misinterpreted as Kian can seem a very serious person when he is in fact treating most conversations as if they are a joke. Despite this somewhat aloof and abrasive impression he gives, Kian is a well intentioned, generous, chivalrous and stoic person. He would break his back for someone else if he believed they needed the help without expecting anything, even acknowledgement, for what he does. Kian always strives to do what is right and frankly doesn't care if he gets anything for it or if someone'll hate him for it as he accepts that being a good, decent person is a thankless and cold job.
History
From the day Kian was born, he’s always been fighting. First it was the fight to survive from being three weeks premature, a fight not even his mother, an accomplished healer, could win for him and left him with 30% of his vision dropped off his field of view with no hope of return. And once he overcame that, it was the fight to prove himself strong enough to stand alongside four older half brothers, all pureblooded Ala Mhigan highlanders as gifted in their martial arts as their father, a man who looked at Kian like a broken toy fit to be stowed away in safety. His mother, a midlander and Ul’dhan was not even an ally he could rely upon, since as much as she loved him and influenced him, Kian knew he could not be like her to be accepted in the community of their meager home in Little Ala Mhigo. He was already too much like her. He looked like her, was well spoken like her, was even noticeably smaller and more like a midlander like her.
Though for all the struggling Kian did to be like his brothers and his father, he was always the one most like his father. With the exception of their eldest brother, Kian’s brothers were slovenly, lazy, entitled and over confident in themselves. They were content to push Kian around, often preying upon his inability to see them coming from the sides and though they loved their youngest brother, he was too Ul’dahn to have that affection shown publicly. Kian learned taught himself how to fight, worked hard to make sure he could keep up with his older brothers and make himself able to stand on his own, but between his vision impairment and the large age gap, Kian had his hard work rewarded with failure after failure.
It was only when their eldest brother, Greyson, who had always mitigated the aggression of his younger brothers against Kian when present, noticed how hard his half brother tried that he finally decided to take the time to teach Kian to fight properly. Until that point Kian had been little more than a pre-teen brawler, throwing his fists and putting all his faith in strength. It was Greyson who taught him the value of his speed and being lighter on his feet than his much larger brothers and Greyson who taught Kian to use his ears where his eyes failed him, to hit in just the right spot, to never let his brothers catch him. Thanks to Grayson, Kian finally managed to stand up for himself and finally managed to carve out some pride for himself.
It was a few years of peace in their tight knit family that followed for all five boys after that day. Kian didn’t antagonize his brothers and he had earned their respect and for a while, he was one of them. His parents, however, did not feel this peace. His mother and father instead had their attentions turned towards the growing tension in Eorzea due to the encroaching Garlean force and as a result joined up with the Immortal Flames. His father went to avenge his lost home, his first wife and fallen brother and his mother went to run triage and protect Eorzea’s forces. Thus when the calamity came, both his parents as well as Grayson, much more recently joined up with the Immortal Flames, all went proudly to the battle of Carteneau.
They did not return as they had left. His father had been permanently crippled, having lost his leg below the knee. Grayson, having never experienced a battle like it, had his mind altered with such a pervading fear and anxiety that ever since he has found it hard to venture past the borders of Little Ala Mhigo at all. And worst of all, Kian’s mother did not return at all. Having spent so much of his life trying to shun his mother’s ways and resist being like her, this loss hit Kian particularly hard and made him from that point on cold. He had no time to mourn; he had no one to lean on with her gone. His father and Grayson were the only ones he could turn to and they both were unable to cope with anything but their own pain.
In this lieu of a patriarchal figurehead for the family, Kian rose to the occasion despite being only fourteen years old at the time and not feeling strong enough to get up in the morning, let alone take charge of his family. But he did, because if he didn’t, who else would? His three other brothers were lost without Grayson as their guide and under the stress of it all, gave into their lackadaisical, selfish natures. Thus Kian began taking any job he could, earning just enough to scratch by with just enough food to put on the table.
His brothers grew to rely on him heavily, spending most of their time unproductively and trusting that they didn’t have to work because Kian would make ends meet. And he did. He did it over and over again, because he had the work ethic, he had the tireless drive, the sense of responsibility and the ability to shut his emotions down, to close it all off and make it happen. If he ever didn’t make it happen, his brothers would be sure to let him know with a hard fist to the jaw while caught unawares. But that was fine, since it kept Kian going, since it was his fault for allowing himself to be so weak that they could’ve landed a hit on him. Thus Kian went from an average, adventurous and wild young boy to a calloused, cold and hardworking young man with no life of his own.
Recent events have seen Kian breaking away from his family almost entirely and setting off for Ishgard where after a near death experience that earned him a few new scars, he spent a few months trying to find a way to control the violent and inexplicable rage he has contended with most of his life. By chance, when asking for leads on anyone who might have such knowledge, he was given a peculiar stone and told to carry it on his person, as well as being gifted a great sword. Though he initially disregarded the gift due to his usual disdain for gifts, the dark knight's soulstone did not take long to have a profound effect, during which time Kian is not entirely certain what actually happened and what was occurring only in his mind, but once he emerged after having conquered and contained his own demons, he has been able to control and redirect his anger. Only recently has he returned to Ul'dah, bouncing between Thanalan, Coerthas and Dravania in search of odd jobs while he contemplates a more permanent career.
Affiliations and Known Associates
- Katja Hoax - A long lost cousin who he met in Ishgard and didn't actually know was his cousin until they got to talking, Kat is... a bit odd and radically different from Kian. He is at times uncertain around her simply because he has had such a bad track record with his blood relatives, though has gradually warmed up to his cousin and her ready hospitality. For now, Kian spends many nights sleeping in Kat's spare room and helping her around her shop and home in order to not feel like such a free loader. He does genuinely enjoy her company regardless, and has grown quite close to her already despite having not known her for very long.
- Kiipa Nulstat - Closer to him than any of his brothers by blood, Kian considers Kiipa his sister and will refer to her as such easily and without qualm, and if anyone questions why a hyur might call a miqo'te sister he'd only look at someone like they were an idiot for not seeing the family resemblance. Though they fight like siblings might, Kian loves her unconditionally and will always be there for her no matter how mad she's made him or how hard times get. If Kiipa's in trouble, Kian will move heaven and earth to get to her and if anyone crosses her, they may want to watch their backs and sleep with one eye open. Kiipa is his grounding point and his best friend and one day Kian's gonna buy her a really nice box to stand on.
- Leif Steele - Though Leif and Kian no longer speak, Kian still loves the man, even though they are not together and Leif has made it quite clear they likely never will be again. Kian regularly does all he can to try and stop himself from feeling the way he does for his own health if nothing else, but has had no success in that area. At this point he has come to accept that it is unlikely the way he feels will change any time soon and has thus shut himself down to the idea of ever finding anyone to take Leif's place as well as the idea of Leif ever coming back, rationalizing it as it being what it is and nothing more, these days opting to looking for ways to dull the ache or remove his memory of that time entirely than trying to let go.
- Lynx Lostwind - The last time Kian and Lynx cross paths it wasn't such a good conversation and because of this, even though Kian has always seen Lynx as a respected friend and cared about his well being, he doesn't believe the feeling is mutual. He hasn't seen the man since, but even if he did, it is unlikely Kian would approach him simply out of a desire to not go where he isn't wanted.
- Vulgar Beast - Kian has a lot of reservations about Vulgar, but he's slowly (so slowly) warmed up to the man and even though he's crass and an asshole, doesn't see him as a bad person and would tentatively call him a friend.

Likes
- A good fight. Or rather, the chance to win in a good fight. Also punching.
- Meeting new people. Prickly as he can be, he genuinely enjoys attempting to understand people who are different from him.
- Going somewhere new and learning new things. He's been cooped up in Thanalan too long for a busy mind like his to be happy.
- Sleeping. He never gets to though, at least not for as long as he'd like.
- Hot weather. The idea of Coerthas and frozen water on the ground scares him just a little. He's pretty sure that's what hell is like.
Dislikes
- Rain. Water in general, really. he might not know how to swim
- Amalj'aa. Bunch of lunatics.
- Drinking. Other people can do it, he doesn't like acting stupid himself though.
- Wishy washy people. Don't complain, pick yourself up and get it done already. No one can save you or make your decisions but you.
- Liars. Liars get stitches.
- Being called 'Grumpy' or 'Sunshine' or anything else stupid. Do people not understand he can hit them really really hard?
Areas of Expertise
- Martial:
Kian has recently taken to the use of a great sword and has become quite adept at it very fast. Through continued use of the dark knight's soulstone, Kian has learned to use this martial style of great sword and aether usage to channel both his anger and the ease with which he routes aether into a formidable fighting style that is skillful enough to make up for many of his short comings when looking for employ. This is, however, a fairly new technique to Kian and in need of perfecting and honing and does occasionally fall apart at the worst of times, but all the raw, natural talent is there and Kian takes the time to better himself every day.
- Crafting:
Although he'd sooner not mention them since he considers it matronly, as a product of having to be the sole caretaker of his family, Kian is relatively skilled in cooking, weaving and mending armor, though he's no where near an artisan.
- Other:
Having spent most of his life trying to be a pugalist to little avail, Kian is still, regardless, rather good at throwing a punch and remarkably hard hitting. So if his great sword goes down or gets knocked out of his hands, it's foolish to think him defenseless.
Strengths
- Integrity - Kian will never lie or betray to someone, even if it means he has to bear the burden and he's the one who gets screwed over, he would rather take a knife to the stomach than to be a liar or a traitor.
- Determined - When Kian sets his mind to something he goes out and does it. It doesn't matter how hard it is or how long it takes, he'll toil at it tirelessly and without complaint until it's achieved.
- Solidarity - Though Kian can seem aloof and cold, when someone is in need he will rise to the occasion and help them and when the circumstances arise, he will work cohesively with others to achieve a goal since that to him is more important than voicing personal opinions.
- Thoughtful - It's easy to write Kian off as judgmental and offensive, but the things he says and the things he thinks are often two vastly different things. Thus even though it doesn't show, Kian does actually notice and appreciate the good parts of a person and hold them above their faults. Sometimes his anger just has a habit of getting in the way of expressing that.
- Decisive - With a few exceptions, Kian's strong opinions and ideals do make it easy for him to make a decision and act accordingly, very rarely if ever spending any time hemming and hawing.
Weaknesses
- Internalized - You would have better luck trying to get a mountain to open up than Kian. Ask him about his feelings and he might just walk away or give you bitchface.
- Temper - Perhaps Kian's greatest enemy is himself, since even with all his effort, Kian's has an inherent predisposition to lose his cool and has very little knowledge on how to effectively cope with it.
- Socializing - "Why do I have to be nice to them? They're not nice. That's dumb."
- Stubborn - Though his determination can be a great advantage and testament to his character, it also makes him like a dog with a bone and it's hard to make him let go of something even when he knows he should.
- Expressing himself - Because he makes every effort to ignore his own emotions, when the time comes to acknowledge them plainly he's like a toddler speaking about the mechanics of magitek devices. What is feelings?
Other Notes
Religion
Though he was raised Ala Mhigan, Kian takes Byregot as his patron God in honor of his mother who also prayed to Byregot. However, that said, Kian does not truly put any faith in the twelve despite having been raised in a fairly faithful family, to Rhalgr or otherwise. He believes that if the Gods care about anyone it is not the people of Eorzea and he would rather put faith in his own strength to get him through the day then aiming for the guidance of a God who likely doesn't even know he exists.
Quirks
Kian is very bad at making jokes, but he actually likes to make jokes. Though unless you know him, you probably wont be able to tell and think he is even more offensive than he is because he tends to say jokes in a very serious tone that makes it seem uncertain if he's joking at all. He also tends to scowl at people even if he would like to smile if he doesn't know them very well. Sometimes he likes to intentionally confuse newcomers to Ul'dah too and give them incorrect directions. It makes him smile a little. sometimes he acts his age, shh
Equipment
Though not even he is sure how or when he obtained it, Kian traded the great sword he had been gifted by a merchant in Ishgard for the fausse he carries now, with it's gnarled, twisted pommel and curved blade that is hard as diamond but blackened by Ifrit's fire.
Rumours
The following rumours can be heard about Kian, predominantly in Ul'dah and Thanalan. (If your character has an opinion about him, feel free to add it to the bottom.)
Common rumours
- "He's a jerk. And an asshole. And so rude. Did I say jerk?"
- "Well. He's a hard worker. Just hard to work with. Can't really say anything else that's nice about him."
- "Quiet, cold, kinda broody but definitely fearless. Talks shit to damn near anyone who stands next to him long enough."
Uncommon rumours
- "Don't hire that one. He's alright till he's not, and when he's not he's picking fights on your time. Plenty of other refugees just as capable that aren't such a problem."
- "He's kind of crazy, isn't he? I heard he tries to beat people that so much as look at him funny."
- "He can be pretty mean, but I don't think he's that bad really. He always buys from the beggars on pearl lane even though twelve knows they're selling nothing of value."
Rare rumours
- "Poor kid. Ain't never been right since that mother of his passed. Stand up lady, she was, not many better. Pity no one remembers her these days."
- "Is he related to those other Daas boys? Bad news, the lot of them."
What PCs are saying
- "One of these days, I know I'll open my door and there will be a box to stand on. People might look at me weird for referring to him as I do, but he is kin. Given that I was just a cat in the Quicksand not long ago... well, things change. People change. Kian... Kian just sort of melts into something new." - Kiipa Nulstat
