Basic Info

Marcado’s family owned a small stretch of mushroom caves and an adjacent distillery on the outskirts of the North Shroud where, for generations, the Benedatto’s bottled and sold their own brand of morelwine--a duskwight tradition usually described as “unpalatably earthy.” The business was successful for its scale, however and that success afforded Marcado an easy childhood. By the time he was 17, his father arranged an apprenticeship under a midlander silk merchant in Limsa Lomnisa, and he left the remote caves of his home to learn complicated numbers and business acumen.
He spent his first years dutifully attending his master--often delivering parcels, managing shipments, accepting payments and transcribing verbal agreements. And though he excelled initially, his sanguinary youthfulness and sheltered past drove him progressively harder against his boundaries in a city where anything is available to anyone that wants it enough. He found himself drawn to the nighttime lights at the docks--the rousing bars, the varied drinks, the massive ships and interesting, storied characters that ran their courses.
One captain in particular, Yvessa Wintermarche, proved especially devastating. Initially drawn to her boat for the thronged revelers singing on the deck, he found himself cordially invited to spend his evenings aboard whenever they were in port. The months that followed were a whirlwind of late-night parties and later-night, alcohol-fueled discussions of politics, destiny, freedom and purpose. The White Sparrow, as it was named, seemed crewed with philosophers from all walks.
His parents received word not long after that his master had officially cancelled the apprenticeship. “Truancy,” listed as the reason even as Marcado’s letters home had dwindled. For years little was seen or heard of him.
He reemerged over a decade later and after the calamity working quietly as the groundskeeper at the Church of Saint Adama Landama. Recently, he's been hired by a band of pirate hunters called Llymlaen's Gale for investigative work.

Appearance, Personality, and Other Tidbits

  • Marcado values his privacy to a fault and has a penchant for turning questions on their askers after token answers, though he's generally earnest in his motivation rather than deflective or defensive.
  • He's especially unlikely to speak about his family with strangers.
  • He's quick to offer his help where he thinks he's useful, but doesn't respond well to management or official commitment. To the latter point, he's been known to back out of tasks he's been completing unofficially when he's asked to make his involvement official.
  • Generally speaking, he's clean and dressed as sharply as his limited budget allows. Recently, his been styling his hair extremely close-cropped.
  • On non-personal topics, he's often a lively conversationalist. He's also far more receptive to flirtatiousness from strangers and more likely to repay that behavior among casual acquaintances than closer relations. As one moves closer to him in social circles, he cools exponentially.
