Basic Info

Born in Gridania and currently residing in Ul'dah, Mihwa'li Okhu is a city boy by heart, with very little roots in Keeper of the Moon culture. Despite this, he holds a deep, permeating respect for the culture and wishes to learn more about his origins. Born under the guardian deity Oschon, Mihwa'li is an explorer not of the material world, but of his heart. Great emotional turmoil has left him meek and soft-spoken, but he is naturally soft and nurturing. Despite being assigned female at birth, Mihwa'li identifies as male and prefers to be referred to as such. In his youth, he shouldered a fierce hatred for the disparity between his body and his identity, but time, strength, and support from the people around him has granted him not only acceptance of himself, but a newfound appreciation for what Menphina has granted him. Bearing the colors of the moon and stars upon his face and hair, he has found comfort in the loving embrace of Menphina, and worships her as his goddess.

Appearance

Mihwa'li is a young man of average weight and height for his kind, falling at about 5'4" (65 inches) tall. He has beautiful, dark skin with a smattering of darker freckles along his upper arms, back, and shoulders. A cluster of three moles can be found in the inside of his left ear, and there are several hidden treasures towards his hips and pelvic region. The only scar of note is a raised, mottled scar just beneath his bottom left lift--something he vaguely dubs as a 'reminder for why I fear the Shroud'. Very faint scars run up and down his legs from a treant attack in his early childhood. His eyes are a deep, mahogany brown that are truly the windows to his soul--most of his emotions can be seen through them. His face is adorned with streaks of white paint, which exist as symbols of worship for the moon and stars--specifically, Menphina. A past lover has described his hair as akin to the color of starlight. However, this is only his dyed hair, as his natural hair color is much different--and kept to himself!

In regards to his body, he has been blessed with a naturally sultry physique; flared hips, thick thighs, and soft curves to name a few traits. Though he is already relatively flat-chested, Mihwa'li does use a binder to bind his breasts for his own personal comfort. He typically prefers baggy clothing, so it can be surprising to others when he dresses lighter and his appealing form is more pronounced.

Voice

Mihwa'li's voice is soft and beautiful, with a natural musical nature to it that draws others in. Mihwa'li's voice is most comparable to Mitch Grassi's singing voice in the cover of Feist's song, The Graveyard.

History

Early Childhood

As a young boy, Mihwa'li faced opposition for his identity not from his family, but from the residents of Gridania, namely the Wood Wailers and more traditional Keepers of the Moon residing there. In his youth, he was unable to emotionally handle such disgust towards him and often acted out. This led to much strife between him and his mother, who was less supportive of his identity than his father. These poor behaviors intensified after his father left Gridania for good, leading to a rift forming between him and the remaining members of his family. Isolated and frustrated, Mihwa'li spent most of his early childhood playing alone in the Shroud. One day, while playing near Lifemend Stump, a deeply sacred bit of land in the Central Shroud, he tripped over a ground squirrel and accidentally broke its neck betwixt his legs. Traumatized, the young boy, barely eight summers, watched as the forest turned on him. He had invoked the Greenwrath. The boy was violently attacked by a treant that, in its elemental rage, attempted to devour him whole. Thankfully, Hearers of the Fane were able to stop the attack before Mihwa'li could be crushed by the beast. Mihwa'li's woodsin did not go unpunished; for one week was the boy to wait to go on trial for his crimes, and attempt the ritual dance to appeal to the elementals in hopes that his woodsin would be cleansed. With pre-existing prejudice for his race and gender already working against him, the child was to be barred from entering the city until the trial, and was cast out as an exile to be left to his own devices.

The Wood Wailers assigned to watch over Mihwa'li until his trial "lost him", claiming that he had run in the dead of night. In truth, they had lured the boy deeper and deeper into the Shroud, and had left the wailing, terrified child alone. For an entire three moons did the boy wander, 'round and 'round the Shroud, terrified by the very visage of treants and sent running in the opposite direction each time he came across even a peaceful sapling. Though search parties were sent out to look for him, by the second moon, he had been confirmed to be gone and likely dead. However, during a reconnaissance mission to Ixali territory north of Fallgourd Float, a duskwight elezen and Gods' Quiver Bowman by the name of Nevionaud D'joux found the boy half-frozen at the base of a tree, perhaps a half-malm away from the Coerthan border. He barely recognized Mihwa'li, but brought him back to Fallgourd Float, where he was treated for severe malnutrition, dehydration, and a parasitic infection and fever. This sickness, paired with his trauma, caused Mihwa'li to suffer from retrograde amnesia--in fact, his very first memory was the sensation of his tiny head being rolled between the molars of a treant and the pressure of his head about to be crushed.

When he was brought back to Gridania, the weak and near-death boy was forced to undergo the ritualistic dance and transferring of woodsin into a wooden mask in order to atone for his transgressions against the forest, accidental as they had been. Unable to stand on his own, Mihwa'li was aided in this dance by Nevionaud, onto whom he imprinted. He refused to return to his true family, unable to recall any of them. Devastated, his mother gathered Mihwa'li's siblings and left him to be raised by his new foster father. Regardless of their racial differences, Nevionaud loved and cherished Mihwa'li like a true son and raised him to the best of his ability. However, the now nine-year-old child was severely stunted in his emotional growth and was nonverbal, angry, and unable to be brought down by his horrible tantrums. Desperate, Nevionaud sought out anything to appease the suffering child. He finally found it in his prized harp, passed down in his family from generation to generation. Only the sweet, dulcet tones of the beautiful, old harp could calm Mihwa'li. And so, Nevionaud set out to teach Mihwa'li how to play all of the instruments he owned. The music Mihwa'li played was beautiful, and by age fourteen, he was able to control his outbursts of emotion with music and singing. Nevionaud had effectively created a musical prodigy.

Adolescence and Beyond

Mihwa'li's life was not without strife, however. Wood Wailers continued to be cruel to him, and this cruelty reached its peak when Nevionaud was assigned to an 'important task' and lured out into the Shroud, where he was presumably murdered by rogue Wood Wailers. Burdened by a lasting, intense phobia of treants and the Shroud itself, Mihwa'li confined himself to a life exclusively within Gridania's borders and grew up without seeing the outside world. Extremely claustrophobic, Mihwa'li often looked to the stars for solace, describing them as the 'only window through which I see not city walls, but freedom'. Later, Mihwa'li would meet Aran'sae Dia, Hearer of Stillglade Fane, and Mihwa'li's first love. Shortly after joining Aran'sae's company as its minstrel, however, Mihwa'li was subject to further emotional abuse, which finally led to him stealing a substantial amount of gil from the company and fleeing on an airship for Ul'dah.

In the past year, Mihwa'li has grown significantly, with numerous relationships both romantic and platonic. He has experienced love, heartbreak, and joy. It is in this year that Mihwa'li has finally tasted a life outside of the bindings of his own fear and has experienced both love from others and himself. It seems that a period of peace is finally settling over him, but ripples of his past melancholy and despair is still laced within each soft, melodious word from his lips.

Personality

Mihwa'li is soft-spoken and melancholic. Non-confrontational, meek, and subdued, to other Keepers of the Moon he may seem abnormal or even a poor example of what Keeper men are supposed to be. Despite identifying as a man, Mihwa'li is not masculine in any regard, but is unafraid to fiercely defend his choices and his behaviors to others. He is acutely aware of his effeminate nature--in the past, it was a source of angst for him. Now, however, he fully embraces it as part of who he is. Living in Ul'dah has given him the confidence and freedom to explore his gender identity, as opposed to the repression of his identity he endured in Gridania. As such, he is patient with anyone who asks genuine questions about his gender with no malicious intent. That said, he is very quick to lose his temper with those who are willfully ignorant of his identity. When he is comfortable, Mihwa'li has a sultry, flirtatious side to him. And if his conversation partner is particularly lucky, they may experience a splash of sassiness from the gentle Keeper.

Skills and Talents

Music

Perhaps most predominantly, Mihwa'li is a musical genius and is adept at playing the harp, harpsichord, lute, drums, and cello. However, he despises the flute. His voice is often described as bone-chillingly beautiful. He sings exclusively from the heart, and will write his own music in order to portray emotions he is feeling. In his late adolescence, he performed as a minstrel in Gridania's Canopy tavern, where he lived off of tips and free offerings from Mother Miounne as thanks for drawing adventurers and tourists alike to her tavern. Now, however, he only sings for very special occasions... or very special people.

Dance & Conjury

Blessed with a remarkably lithe and flexible body, Mihwa'li is currently in the process of learning how to apply his flexibility into the fine art of dancing. His dance style consists of dramatic shapes made with his body, stretches, and slow, sultry movement. He would be better described as a contortionist than a dancer. He is often seen practicing his dancing with his pastoral crook; a hooked cane with a bell attached to the crook. Always dancing barefoot, Mihwa'li has discovered a way to draw aether into his body from beneath his feet and release it in the form of healing magic. Unfortunately, due to his lack of experience or proper training, he is still rather incompetent in terms of serious medical healing. This does not mean that he does not have other uses for this magic, however, and he will often play with the released aether to create flashes of different colors in the air.
