Basic Info

Nalleux de Mercier is a noble of Ishgard, the middle child of his house, and a talented young knight who once aspired to join the Heavens' Ward before its fall.

Appearance

A tall, handsome elezen man with strawberry-blonde hair to his shoulders, Nalleux de Mercier looks the part of a born knight. Naturally broad-shouldered, he has a warrior's sturdy frame earned through years of intensive training.

History

Nalleux de Mercier is the second son and middle child of House Mercier of Ishgard, the child of Baron Reynelt and Baroness Eviane (nee Dolenat). House Mercier is loyal to Fortemps, but his mother's house has ties to Durendaire, which made the match something of a surprise. Nalleux has an older brother, Lord Arent, the heir and a machinist like his father, and a younger sister, Lady Camille, a talented young scholar at St. Endalim's Scholasticate.

As his brother Arent was bound to be the heir of the house, Nalleux was pushed by his family to excel and find his own way from a young age. He was a large, strong boy, but he also showed both a natural talent for thaumaturgy and a powerful faith in Halone. Even as naught but a promising squire, Nalleux had begun to develop his own unique fighting style, blending masterful swordplay with divine lightning, in hopes of attracting the attention and respect of the Archbishop and the Heavens' Ward. He was knighted due to his actions in the Dragonsong War, rescuing a surrounded group of Ishgardian soldiers from half a dozen vouivres, cutting down two and driving off the rest with peals of thunder.

The revelations about the Archbishop and the Heavens' Ward took a severe toll on Nalleux, however, and he slipped into depression following the Dragonsong War.

Personality

Nalleux has the pride and certainty of a man who has been gifted and talented all of his life, and treated as such. Though not rude or boorish, Nalleux acts toward his "lessers" with a certain sense of condescension and noblesse oblige. Toward others of high social standing or proven talent, however, Nalleux is respectful and knightly.

Hidebound and standoffish, Nalleux nevertheless keeps a great deal of passion beneath a cool exterior. He is given to bouts of melodrama, and taking slights in disproportion to reality. Nalleux's depression following the Dragonsong War affected him greatly. Somewhat more angsty, grim, and peevish than before, his better self does yet often shine through in the company of friends and family. Perhaps the greatest loss was his goal--without the Heavens' Ward to aspire to, the gifted knight has been aimless.

Traits

  • Highly skilled warrior, such that nomination to the Heavens' Ward was not considered far-fetched by many.
  • Reasonably well-read, though he is far from a proper mage or member of the clergy.
Quirks
  • Styled 'the Lightning Blade' as an aspirant to the Heavens' Ward, though he rarely uses it now.
  • His maternal grandfather was a respected Temple Knight drawn out of retirement in the closing days of the Dragonsong War, and killed fighting Aymeric's rebels in the Vault.
