Character

General

At the age of 11, Renata was pulled from the burning ruins of her home by a close friend of hers, and together they fled to Ala Ghirri, where Renata's cousin Eorla lived. But the event changed something within Renata. She went from a joyful, carefree spirit to being distant, cold, and often downright antagonistic, and there are very few exceptions to that rule.

Appearance

Renata has blue eyes and long black hair with a fringe of bangs that hang to either side of her face. The rest of her hair is usually pulled into a low ponytail or braided in the Gyr Abanian style. Her build is athletic, with a modest amount of muscle definition. Her right shoulder and arm are tattooed in a tribal design, and there is a lattice of whip scars on her back from her time as a prisoner in Castrum Centri. Her posture is usually straight, the disciplined stance of a seasoned combat veteran.

Personality

Renata is reserved, restrained. She isn't really prone to smiling beyond a slight smirk or a sneer. Her voice is gentle, but when she speaks, her tone is firm, direct. She does not warm up easily to those she doesn't know or have a tie to, but once she does, she is compassionate, engaged, quick-witted. At work, she is no-nonsense. In combat, she is merciless, often turning off her emotions in order to do whatever needs to be done.

History

(Unless information under "Background" was divulged to your char ICly, it is only known OOCly. This section will be updated as events unfold.)

Early Life

The eldest child of Ralof and Sif Lynn, Renata enjoyed a happy, loving home. Her parents doted on their daughter, even after the arrival of their son, Arik, when Renata was 10 years old. Ralof and Sif enjoyed a devoted, peaceful marriage. Renata spent most of her time with her lifelong friend, Elijah, and even from an early age, the two were inseparable, leading the townsfolk to smile and say that when one would lead, the other would be their shadow. Even then, Elijah was fiercely protective of his young friend, and Renata looked up to him.

When Renata was 11, the Garleans invaded. She was about to come downstairs one morning when a magitek cannon blast brought the Lynn house down around the family. A terrified Renata watched her mother, her father, and her brother die in the flames, and would have perished herself had Elijah, fleeing for his life, not run past and hear her screams. The 15-year old dug Renata out of the smoldering ruins with his bare hands, and fled with his barely-alive friend to Ala Ghirri, where her cousin Eorla lived. Eorla spent nearly a moon ensuring the survival of her cousin.

But when Renata finally woke, she was a bitter, hateful shell of the girl she'd once been. The only people she would let her guard down around were Elijah and Eorla. At the age of 20, she left the village that had become her second home, and traveled to the Vylbrand to study arcanima at the Guild in Limsa Lominsa. Elijah, who had taken to staying even closer to Renata since the destruction of their home, followed her. During this time, she wrote home to Eorla, but not much else is known in regards to her activities.

Life in Eorzea

At the Start

Renata mostly kept to herself, choosing to travel the land with Elijah and hunt. It was only when a moogle to Eorla, who had recently gone to study Conjury and further her skills as a medic, went unanswered. After a week-long search, she found that Eorla had neglected to inform her that she had left on a pilgrimage. Elijah went to go verify that she was alright, and wound up staying with Eorla for a time, watching over the girl he'd considered a little sister as she recovered from a breakup and an injury. He neglected to keep in touch with Renata, and it drove the beginnings of a wedge between the two previously inseparable friends.

Renata, however, had found herself suddenly having a student, though it was begrudgingly. She began to interact with more and more people, though she was prickly and almost hostile to nearly everyone. As the time passed with no word from Elijah and little word from Eorla, Renata grew tense and fidgety. She and Elijah had always been close, even before the attack. Afterwards, Elijah had not left her side when she was clinging to life, and as they continued growing up by the sea, he stayed almost constantly within her sight. They were both cold and distant to everyone except Eorla, but they were utterly devoted to one another, though not in a romantic way. Renata had felt her feelings begin to shift when they'd left to travel to Eorzea together, but any time she tried to tell Elijah, he always seemed oblivious. She grew colder as weeks passed with no word.

Turning Point

One night, she was drinking herself numb in the Quicksand when a Midlander approached her. She reacted as she did with anyone else...she glared and a low growl began to sound, but when he spoke, the pain in his eyes stopped Renata's hostility in its tracks. He said, "I know that feeling well." A conversation ensued in which Renata, while not openly warm and friendly, actually opened up a tiny bit. She and Percival soon struck a friendship that would wind up becoming the catalyst for a shift in Renata.

When Elijah finally came back from monitoring Eorla, Renata was furious that he'd not even sent her word that he was at least alive, and the two quarreled, and the things the Highlander man said to her left Renata stormy and enraged. When Percival went to meet his friend for a drink before the Grindstone fighting tournament, he found that nearly all the progress he had made with her was gone. She was stony, silent, and sullen. After some very careful prying, she snapped at him that according to the one who knew her best, she was a terrible person, and told him as she stood to walk away, that it was best if Percival were to forget he ever met her. She stormed outside, and he followed, only to find tears running down Renata's face. Her dearest friend had turned on her and hurt her, and when the Midlander wrapped his arms around her in a comforting hug and told her he wasn't going to just forget her, Renata broke down sobbing.

After that, Renata and Percival grew ever closer as friends, and Renata found herself viewing him in a way she'd never really viewed anyone, not even Elijah, who had again disappeared. Renata and Percival then became a couple, and shortly afterwards, Elijah returned, begging forgiveness and telling Renata he loved her, asked her to give him another chance and leave Percival. Renata didn't even have to think about it...she told Elijah she couldn't walk away from Percival, whom she loved, and that they had something together that Renata wouldn't ever toss aside for anyone.

Renata and Percival relocated temporarily to Ishgard, Percival's birthplace, where they assisted in the rebuilding effort and helped to defend Ishgard from the Dravanians. After the end of the Dragonsong War, they both joined the Ala Mhigan Resistance and after the liberations of Doma and Ala Mhigo, they finally wed. They own a home in the Mist, as well as a vacation apartment in Shirogane.

Anecdotes & Quotes

"You...make me believe I am all those things you say I am. You make me believe good things about myself..." -said to Percival.

Combat

General

Renata is an Arcanist with a dual-specialty in both destructive and healing formulae. She trains with the daggers and the greatsword and is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter. In her free time, she trains with her husband, the pair can often be found sparring or hoping to be pitted against each other in the Grindstone. Renata is fairly certain her husband is the superior fighter and is holding back on her, since she somehow almost always bests him in their spars.

Tendencies

Renata is a creature of habit and regimen, a result of her life in the Immortal Flames. However, she and Percival do tend to make spur of the moment trips sometimes, and they've both worked very hard to be able to indulge in those moments. When she is frustrated or irritated, she tends to rub the bridge of her nose.

Flaws

Her exterior is almost constantly cold, and distant. She does not trust easily, in fact, she can be almost outwardly antagonistic if approached on the wrong day...She may come off as cocky when speaking on the arcane arts or knife-wielding, but this is due to her almost clinical, analytic manner when discussing a topic on which she is reasonably educated. She can be solemn and stoic to a fault, resulting in an intense display of emotion when it is unleashed.

Relationships

Family

Renata's father, Ralof.
  • Father: Ralof Lynn - A skilled swordsman, Ralof was a loving husband and doting father. When Renata begged for a sword for her 5th birthday so she could "Be like Papa", Ralof gave her a set of daggers, her very first, saying the sword was too heavy for her. He taught her everything he knew about the art of the knife, and paid for her lessons when her skill surpassed his own. He was proud of his family, and died trying to save them.
Renata's mother, Sif.
  • Mother: Sif Lynn - Sif was formidable with a sword and skilled with her hands and feet, but around her family, she was a soft, gentle woman who guided her spirited daughter with a firm but tender hand. Renata adored her mother and never hesitated to turn to her for guidance and advice. Sif perished trying to save her children.
  • Brother: Arik Lynn - Renata's very young brother, he was less than 20 moons old when he died. While Renata misses her parents deeply, Arik's memory instills a sense of guilt and unfairness within her, as she was unable to save him, and would have died as well had it not been for the efforts of someone else. Foir the longest time, the boy was an off-limits topic for Renata, but she will, on occasion, especially if she is with Percival, mention him in passing. She has, however, spoken in-depth about Arik a few times with Percival.
  • Cousin: Eorla Brynn, Doctor/Midwife/Aether Manipulator. Renata views her older cousin as a sister. It was Eorla who tended to Renata's injuries, spending nearly an entire moon anchoring Renata's soul to the realm of the living. Renata and Eorla are extremely close, and frequently write one another. They have had disagreements from time to time, but it never affected their bond, not even when Renata found out Eorla's father was the son of a Garlean Legatus.

Friends

  • Elijah Levesque, deceased: A friend since childhood, Renata is thankful to him for her life, as he saved her from her burning home. He was one of her closest friends, and for much of the time she knew him, she loved him. He appeared to not care, and Renata become convinced he was in love with her cousin and distanced herself from him after an argument.
Renata and Percival
  • Percival Turner: A kindred spirit she met attempting to drown her problems in firewater, Percival slowly but surely chipped away at Renata's icy exterior, and she found herself becoming very fond of him rather quickly. After what happened with Elijah, Renata tried to keep her mouth shut and ignore the frightening feelings the Midlander was causing her to feel, but following Renata's first crack at the Grindstone, in which she was eliminated in the first round, she confessed to him that she was falling in love with him, and they became a couple. It's been a road that hasn't been completely smooth, with their thirsts for battle taking them all over, but Renata and Percival remained steadfast and eventually vowed themselves to one another before the gods. They recently celebrated their first anniversary.
