Character

General

Appearance

A blonde midlander of roughly average height, his most recognizable visual traits are the scars on his face. Two scars cross his left eye and his nose, while a newer third scar runs down his right cheek.

Personality

Percival is primarily a very passionate person about anything that he does, which mostly means that he is very dedicated to studying and developing techniques that he uses in his primary job as a front-line combatant for the Chocobo's Wing free company. It is that passion that's led to him trying to learn about any school of magic or combat that he can find. This emotion-prone nature has its faults, as there is a slightly more twisted side to his personality that mainly manifests when he's in a fight. He also has the habit of referring to his weapons, his chocobo, and even this other side of himself, as partners.

To Percival, bonds like friendship and loyalty are incredibly important. His goal in most battles is to insure the safety, or at least survival, of his friends. He sees part of his duty, as a friend, to provide support and be there to help if, and when, things go wrong.

Combat

General

Percival has general knowledge in most fields of magic and martial arts, which he combines together in the fighting style that he uses with his great sword.

He started out training in the use of the spear. After seeing that other schools of warfare were favored in the leadership ranks of most organizations, he took up the sword and shield and began his expansion of knowledge there.

As a Dark Knight, his style is tuned to fighting large numbers and large monsters, making him much less effective in one-on-one fights, especially when magic is not available. The lack of real defensive options in non-magic situations has led to a much more aggressive and brutal fighting style.

Friends

  • Renata Lynn - Initially met when Percival was trying to drown himself in ale, Perci and Ren quickly became drinking buddies, then eventually lovers. Work and missions tend to keep the two of them apart for long periods of time.
  • M'wanthala Khryn - The leader of Chocobo's Wing, and the one that recruited Percival. A good friend that he feels indebted to from the days when he first arrived in Gridania, though he is certain that her interest in magitek is going to lead to the company's estate becoming a crater in the Goblet one day.
  • Markus Shae - A superior of Percival's in Chocobo's Wing. It can be said that Perci learned how to fist-fight from this highlander.
  • Euphie Correl - Another superior of Percival's in Chocobo's Wing. Considered the craziest member of Chocobo's Wing by Percival, but also one of the most reliable when it counts.

History/Timeline

(( As usually, all of this is OOC knowledge unless either discussed in-character or via private message. Ishgardian characters might be justified in knowing more. ))

Early Life

Percival was the sixth of eight children of Sir Eric Turner, a retired Temple Knight, and Anastasia Turner, an heiress to a chocobo ranch in Coerthas. Life on the ranch, while as peaceful as one might expect, was also filled with training since an early age. To the children, the ranch was more like an early boot camp, preparing them for what would likely be their future of fighting and defending others, driven primarily by what their father and maternal grandfather knew of what they'd one day be forced into. Among Percival's first memories were great events in the life of his eldest brother, James, who managed to become a Dragoon when Percival was only a child... including the same brother's funeral only a few years later.

The Calamity

Percival was still young when Dalamud broke apart and the elder primal rained death upon Eorzea. He had been in training for his own entry into the Temple Knights when the freeze drove his family from their farm and into the city, at which point he forced himself to leave the service so that he could work various odd jobs throughout Ishgard to help support them. During this time, he was able to leverage his family's work in chocobo ranching to get a job in the stables, in which he worked for a year or so before an incident led to a kick from one particular bird that scarred his face and left him blind in one eye. Until then, he'd still held on to the thought that this was just a temporary profession, that he might eventually return to following his father's path and becoming an archer with the Temple Knights despite the detour, but this injury finally seemed to crush that idea. After a short time spent descending into alcoholism, despite his young age, he eventually decided to leave the city, spend a few spare gil on a spear, and go off to try the adventuring life.

Adventure!

Not long after arriving in Gridania, Percival was lost. Not really knowing what to do aside from learn from the city's guilds and fight the various woodland creatures of the shroud, he eventually encountered a Miqo'te named M'wanthala that helped him figure things out, eventually leading to him deciding to join the free company that she led.

Devouring just about any training the various guilds around Eorzea, he settled on focusing on combat paths meant to protect those he cared about, leading to a good mastery of the sword and shield. During this time, as he was researching aetheric manipulation, thaumaturgy, and arcanima, he tried an experiment with fantasia potion that managed to return sight to his left eye (with a few unfortunate side-effects, including a short time spent as a miqo'te).

After focusing on his combat training for a while, he decided to try participating in the weekly Grindstone tournaments, which he would eventually become a regular fighter in. In his first tournament, he tried using a spear only to be thoroughly trounced (and threatened with eye-gouging) in the very first round. A short time later, having learned his lesson, he returned with a sword and shield and full helmet and earned his first tournament win.
