The Basics
Appearance
Like many of her race, Sumire's face has a youthful appearance. She is fair-skinned, though almost always has a bit of pink to her cheeks thanks to the time she spends out in the sun indulging in one of her favorite hobbies. She is a natural redhead, though the color has faded to a pale pink in several sections of her hair due to years of spellcasting without proper knowledge of aether control and management. Her eyes also show signs of her uncontrolled aether usage, as they both sport light violet limbal rings around their dark blue irises.
Physique-wise, Sumire is tall for a female Au Ra. Though not overly muscular, her arms and legs are well-defined due to the sort of work she usually takes on. She also manages to keep a rather slender - though proportionately curvy - figure despite her love of eating.
Personality
Due to her situation growing up, Sumire has some long-standing emotional scars. She longs to be accepted and fears being cast aside for simply being who she is. She can come across as shy or stand-offish to others upon first meeting, but once she has observed the other party long enough to see they're not a bad person she'll open up. Friends are like family to her, and she will always show them her best hospitality - even though she's not a very good cook. She very much believes in helping others, as well, and always shows kindness to those in need.
Sumire does have her secrets, however. While to the outside world she's a handy jack-of-all trades thaumaturge, she's also a Black Mage. Her reasons for hiding this status are a combination of the general illegal nature of the tradition and her own personal hang-ups regarding the destructive nature of her magic. She genuinely fears her own power, and very rarely taps into the black arts - preferring to only use them as a last resort in more dire situations. She has also been secretly attempting to learn the healing abilities she was unable to master in her youth, desperately wanting to live up to the expectations which her family has had of her since she was a child in spite of having already been disowned by them. In addition, despite her friendly disposition, she often suffers from bouts of loneliness which she hides behind her smile.
When it comes to love, Sumire is a total innocent thanks to her sheltered childhood and will often flirt with others without realizing what she's doing, seeing it merely as friendly banter. She has found herself "fascinated" in the past by the occasional male of various races, but has never acted upon it because she wasn't aware of what those feelings meant. Innuendo more often than not goes right over her head, unless someone points it out to her - in which case she becomes a blushing, flustered mess.
History
Sumire was born the fourth daughter into a highly traditional family of priestesses. Her mother, Miyumi, suffered from a difficult birthing and passed away shortly after bestowing a name upon her youngest daughter. As was tradition for their family, her mother had only taken a mate in order to have a child, leaving no knowledge of the identity of Sumire's father or the fathers of any of her three elder daughters. Therefore, Sumire and her sisters were taken into the custody of their maternal grandmother. Their grandmother never openly blamed Sumire for her daughter's death, but her neglectful treatment toward her youngest granddaughter spoke for her. As a result, the eldest daughter, Kiyoko, stepped into the role of mother figure for Sumire as she was growing up.
Being from an established line of priestesses, it was expected that Sumire - like her sisters - would learn and practice healing and protective magics. However, whereas her sisters excelled in such endeavors, Sumire was unable to fully grasp even the simplest of spells. After speaking to a traveling thaumaturge in their village, Sumire decided to secretly attempt casting minor fire spells on her own. Finding this form of magic came much more easily to her, she continued practicing in secret, slowly expanding her repertoire to include spells which controlled ice, as well. It was hard without formal training, but from that point on she would speak to any thaumaturge who happened to pass through the village and ask them questions about their spells and training.
This secret training was not without its drawbacks, however. As she continued to teach herself to use her magic, her appearance began to change. Sections of her hair started to look a bit lighter, which was easily attributed to being out in the sun. However, her eyes also started to take on a pronounced change, with the limbal rings around her irises gradually changing color. Her secret eventually ended up coming to light shortly after her sixteenth name day when a group of soldiers suddenly appeared in the village where she and her family lived and began destroying everything. Finding herself trapped with her grandmother and sisters in the temple where they lived, she had no choice but to use the magic she'd been teaching herself to fend off their attackers.
Unfortunately, instead of being grateful for her intervention and having saved them, Sumire's grandmother immediately turned on her. She called Sumire a "Norowareta-ko," or "cursed child." All of the resentment she'd been holding toward Sumire since her birth came pouring out, and she disowned her on the spot. Unable to stand up to their grandmother's will as the matriarch of their family, Sumire's sisters followed her and they abandoned Sumire not far from where they had once lived together. It was only by Kiyoko's insistence that they left her at an inn rather than in the middle of the wilderness, and Kiyoko also managed to pass along a few coins to Sumire without their grandmother noticing.
Abandoned by her family, Sumire lived off the small amount of coin and took up odd jobs to help support herself as she moved from place to place out of fear that others might realize what she was and do worse to her than merely leave her alone at the side of a road. She would talk with various craftsmen and suppliers who stayed at the inns she found herself at, learning everything she could about their trades and then using that knowledge to expand upon her own skill set, eventually becoming a sort of jack of all trades - with the exception of cooking, which she is terrible at no mater how hard she tries.
Eventually, Sumire met up with the very same thaumaturge she had initially encountered in her home village, who had set her upon her proper magical path. She confided in him about what had happened with her family, and he suggested she travel to Ul'dah to undergo formal training in thaumaturgy, pointing to the drastic change in her appearance since their first meeting as proof that she needed to learn how to properly control her aether. Following this advice, she ended up making her way to Ul'dah and took up residence there while she underwent her formal training, often taking small jobs from the local merchant to help pay for her living expenses.
Having recently completed her training, Sumire was unexpectedly approached by a member of the order of Black Mages and offered a place among their number. She reluctantly agreed, mostly out of the fear of her own magic one day consuming her rather than a personal thirst for power or fame. Not long after, she heard rumors about a drunken ship captain and thought she might try her hand at a life at sea. She now finds herself the lone user of offensive magic among a ragtag group of "sailors," offering not only her aetheric talents, but her crafting and gathering skills, as well, to their cause.
Affiliations
Think you might want to connect your character's background with mine? Here are some basic affiliations from Sumire Miyumi's past and present that could easily be a place where they met/meet. Send me a message if you'd like to connect them ICly!
Career
Sumire is on a first-name basis with most of the merchants in Ul'dah, and does everything from gathering supplies for them and making wares for them to sell, to helping them hawk said wares and mending their clothes.
Major Events
Sumire spent two and a half years studying thaumaturgy at the Thaumaturges' Guild in Ul'dah, and has recently completed her formal training.
Residence
Sumire does not currently hold a permanent residence, but she has a room at the Quicksand where she often stays. She's also been known to stay in Limsa Lominsa when on business for the Maelstrom. However, she tries to avoid staying in Gridania because - despite the beauty of the city - the overall atmosphere makes her feel a bit uncomfortable because it reminds her of her life growing up.
Religious/Spiritual
Despite being raised in a temple, Sumire isn't overly religious. Holy places actually make her uncomfortable, in part thanks to the way she views her magic as a dangerous curse. She does, however, revere the goddess of fate, Nymeia. Her choice of patron deity is twofold: by revering Her, Sumire hopes to take control of her own fate but also hopes that She will help her retain control over her magic, as Nymeia is the master of Rhalgr, the god of destruction.
Political
Sumire is a member in good standing of the Maelstrom. While she has been living in Ul'dah for the past few years and still calls it home and remains loyal to the Sultana, she feels more at home as a member of the Maelstrom due to their acceptance of those who others might see "outcasts."

Family
|
Miyoko Sakura
Relation: Grandmother ♦ Standing: Complicated ♦ Status: Alive/Unknown With the death of Sumire's mother, the raising of her and her older sisters fell upon their maternal grandmother. Due to Sumire's birth being a direct factor in the death of her daughter, Miyoko often treated her youngest granddaughter in a cold, stand-offish manner. She only grew more distant when it began to become apparent that Sumire lacked the natural talent for healing which ran through the family. When Sumire was forced to use her destructive magic to help her family flee during the razing of their village, Miyoko declared her a cursed child and immediately disowned her from the family. |
|
Unknown
Relation: Father ♦ Standing: N/A ♦ Status: Unknown No one knows who Sumire's father is, just as the identities of her sisters' fathers are unknown. However, many rumors persisted within their village about his identity. Some say he was a Raen with some Xaela blood in his line, while others insist he wasn't Au Ra at all, but of a different race entirely. One consistent belief among the villagers, however, was that he was not a practitioner of any sort of healing discipline. (This belief stemming from the fact that Sumire, unlike her sisters, lacks a talent for healing magics.) |
|
Kiyoko Miyumi
Relation: Sister ♦ Standing: Good ♦ Status: Alive The eldest of Sumire's three sisters, Kiyoko is also the one with whom Sumire was closest. With their grandmother largely ignoring her, it fell upon Kiyoko to act as a mother figure for Sumire while growing up. She knew of Sumire's troubles with healing magic, and also realized before anyone else that her talents laid with the more destructive side of magic. Unlike their grandmother, however, Kiyoko does not see Sumire's talents as a brand of evil. However, as she is to be the next head of the family she could not go against her grandmother's word and therefore has not seen Sumire since the day their grandmother disowned her. Rumors have recently begun to circulate of a woman fitting her description being seen in Gridania and the surrounding wilds, however. |
Allies
|
V'shtah "Jack" Tia
Relation: Friend ♦ Standing: Good ♦ Status: Alive Sumire first met Jack when she joined up with the Crows, and the two bonded when they prepared a meal for several others in the crew and he saved her from serving them all barely edible charcoal. Being a decent cook himself, he offered to give her lessons and she happily agreed. An attractive Seeker, Sumire has developed a bit of a crush on him, but has not acted upon those feelings. |
|
Nergui Himaa
Relation: Friend ♦ Standing: Good ♦ Status: Alive With him being a male Xaela, Sumire was intimidated by Nergui at first, a fact which was not at all helped by his tendency to be very quiet and serious most of the time. A friend of Jack's, he was quickly volunteered to be the official guinea pig for Sumire's cooking lessons, and once she got to know him better she saw how truly kind he is. |
|
Kuru'a Zhwan
Relation: Aquaintance ♦ Standing: Good ♦ Status: Alive Sumire first met Kuru'a when she nearly stepped on his glasses outside the Arcanist's Guild in Limsa. Upon returning them, the two of them struck up a conversation and he became eager to learn more about her magic. A scholar through and through, Kuru'a often rambles at length about whatever the topic of conversation might happen to be. Sumire doesn't mind, however, as she finds that particular trait of his endearing. |
|
The Thaumaturge
Relation: Aquaintance ♦ Standing: Good ♦ Status: Alive An older male thaumaturge who Sumire first met in her home village when she was a child. He first gave her the idea that her magic might be suited more toward destruction rather than healing. Years later, they crossed paths one more when she was a teenager, and after confiding in him about what happened with her family he referred her to the Thaumaturges' Guild in Ul'dah. The two of them haven't really seen each other since then, but they occasionally write letters to stay in touch. |

Open Roles
These are roles that I have in my character's background that I would love to have filled by another player. If you have a character that you think could fit a role, send me a message and let's chat! I would in no way dictate your character's development.
♦ Any family/friend/enemy roles listed above who are not player characters may be taken by other players, but they must first contact me to discuss things. Please don't just suddenly walk up to me acting like one of Sumire's sisters, her sort-of mentor, or her unknown father.
♦ I am open to all sorts of connections, be they good friends or business acquaintances or even rivals.
♦ Those seeking a love connection should keep in mind that Sumire is heterosexual, even if she does flirt with females. More often than not, she doesn't realize what she's doing when it comes to that sort of thing. (As I previously mentioned.)
Additional Information
♦ Sumire has a chocobo named Mitsunari, who acts as her mount and occasional battle companion.
♦ As is the tradition in her family, her surname is the same as her mother's given name, Miyumi.
♦ The lone possession of her mother's that Sumire owns is a rose pendant carved out of red quartz. According to Kiyoko - who gave it to her on her fifth name day - it was a gift from Sumire's father, suggesting that the two may have actually been in love.
