Renly Dane was born on the 5th Sun in the 1st Astral Moon in the Brume of Ishgard. His father was a disgraced knight stripped of his status due to rumors of heresy, and his mother a lowly wench in the local tavern. The pair had one too many a tumble in the alleys, and upon his birth, the mother was completely against having a child, and wished to have the baby given either to another couple or to the streets to die. The father however was more sympathetic, and thus was Renly given the chance to live. His father struggled for work due to his tarnished reputation, while his mother paid little to no attention to Renly, and many nights did the young boy starve. The father resolved to take his family out of Ishgard into Eorzea to start a new life. However, not soon after they had set out of the city and into the wilds of Coerthas were they set upon by dragons. The father was killed defending his family, and the mother fleed from the horde, leaving her lover to rot and her baby to die. Fate had other plans for Renly as he was saved by a patrol of knights under House Durendaire and taken back to Ishgard. It was then that he was taken into the care of a noble of House Durendaire and raised alongside his son.
As an official ward of House Durendaire, Renly’s life had improved significantly, though he was still scrutinized by the highborn and envied by the lowborn, who referred to him as Durendaire’s new dog. The ridicule never got out of hand, nor did he ever let their insults affect him. It also helped that he was almost always accompanied by the noble’s son, who was quick to shut the mouths of the lowborn and highborn alike. One day, while accompanying his lord and his son back to their estate, they were ambushed by bandits. Renly made short work of them, and it was then that he was noticed for his expertise in the way of the lance. He was immediately given leave to practice with the other knights of their house, and participated in tourneys and tournaments, his skill in the lance becoming even more acute.
After years of honing his skills, Renly was granted by House Durendaire to become a knight, and served his house diligently. Whether bandits or dragons, Renly did not falter, and earned himself a distinguished reputation among not only his fellow knights, but among the nobility itself. While out on patrol with his fellow knights on the outskirts of Western Coerthas, they were ambushed by dragons under the leadership of a lieutenant of Nidhogg’s own brood, Gwyndread. Though they all fought valiantly, all were killed in his path; all except Renly himself. The battle between the two was fierce, and through both luck and skill, he ended the life of Gwyndread and his minions. Renly dragged the carcass back to Falcon’s nest as proof of victory over Nidhogg’s minions, and his reputation skyrocketed to new heights, to where he was granted permission by the Holy See itself to join the ranks of the Order of the Knights Dragoon. For five years he served the order in the defense of Ishgard and her people; and through his actions and reputation did House Durendaire’s own name become more respected and renowned throughout the other houses.

The Order of the Knights Dragoon was granted by the Holy See to assist in the mission to reclaim and rebuild the Steel Vigil, which was decimated by the dragons years before. The mission itself was a joint-operation between the order itself and House Haillenarte, who also sought to reclaim the Steel Vigil to redeem their own name. They were met with fierce resistance by another of Nidhogg’s kin, Freilzrid, and though they fought bravely, his horde of dragons was endless, and many lives, both dragoon and Haillenarte, were lost. Renly, seeing that the battle was hopeless, ordered the others to retreat as he held off the brood. He himself came face to face with the great wyrm, and the two battled through the skies themselves. While he was successful in landing a fatal blow, Renly was given a mortal wound by Freilzrid, and thrown out of the sky to the very outskirts of Coerthas. Many in Ishgard proclaimed him to be dead, and his name was held in reverence. However, Renly was still alive albeit barely, teeming on the veil between life and death. When he regained consciousness, he found himself in a foreign land unknown to him; and when he awoke he was surrounded by a great number of dragons, and an even greater number of heretics. Instead of being given death, he was nursed back to health, and it was during this period that Renly was told the truth of the ancient history that brought about the Dragonsong War and shown the secrets that the Church kept from the people of Coerthas. For this reason and the injustice given to both sides in the war did he decide to return to Ishgard and confront their lies in person and bring the truth to the light. On his journey back he was found by members of the Order of the Knights Dragoon, and attempted to persuade them of the truth of the conflict between their kind and the dragons; instead he was branded as a heretic, and forced to defend himself against his former comrades, ending in their death with only one spared to tell the Holy See of his awareness of their lies and deceit. It was then that the Church, the Order, and all of Ishgard disowned Renly, denouncing his heroics and labeling him an apostate and enemy of Ishgard; his fall from grace affected House Durendaire’s reputation as well for harboring a supposed heretic in their midst. His reputation destroyed yet his goal clear, Renly resolved himself to fight on the side of the dragons and finally help bring a close to the Dragonsong War. However, years later in a skirmish between the two forces, Renly was forced to kill his former lord’s son in battle, the same nobleman who took him into his care. Distraught and disillusioned with the cause, Renly deserted, taking no further part in the Dragonsong War until its conclusion.
With the Dragonsong War ended and the seperation of the Orthodox Church from the state, the peace between men and dragon has finally started to become a reality. However, there are still plenty of believers in the former ways of Ishgard and they’ve little love for apostates and those in favor of the peace. Renly is no exception to this principle; and despite both sides coming to an understanding, there’s little love for one who has slain his own countrymen. Renly is grateful for the truth being revealed and his homeland being brought towards the path to peace, however he knows that for his actions he will never be truly welcomed in Ishgard, nor will they go unanswered. These days Renly works as an occasional contractor, selling his skills for coin, and wanders throughout Eorzea, a vagabond with no place to call home.
