Nazaer Wyznharrsyn, also later known by the surname Wolfsbane, was born within sight of the shores of Vylbrand at sea aboard a rickety vessel. From that moment on, Nazaer was made to understand that Vylbrand was home but the sea is where life is made. This lesson was driven again and again into the young Roegadyn by his father, a warehouse quartermaster, and mother, a woman descended from a long line of devotees to Llymlaen. His siblings understood this as following in their parents footsteps but Nazaer, driven by ambition and a wild spirit, took his life in a different direction. And it was by doing so that he set himself on a one way course which led to a life of piracy, regret, and adventure.

Appearance

Wyznharrsyn is a large man, even for one of his kind. An asset which allows him to perform well as a seaman. As the crew of any ship can trust in his ability to tackle the rigging of any ship, regardless of however foul the weather. With his broad shoulders, powerful arms, legs, and rugged hands, Nazaer is powerfully built. In the past, his size had also been put to great use during his time as a brigand.

As befitting his namesake, Nazaer possesses white hair. He also has pale grey eyes and skin

History

Chapter 1: The Beginning, Year 1546 - 1558 of the Seventh Astral Era

On the 27th Sun of the Second Astral Moon, a vessel which had been lost at sea for a month was spotted off the coast of an isolated fishing village in the midst of a storm. Miraculously, the modestly sized ship was able to reach land despite leaning heavily to one side with a foremast that had been reduced to tatters. In fact, their landing would be better described as a wrecking if the alternative hadn't been drowning in the harbor. When the villagers rushed to aid the survivors they immediately recognized many of the faces of this unfortunate crew. For Wyznharr, the vessel's captain, had departed only a few months prior for Limsa Lominsa with a hull filled to the brim with freshly packed fish. "Llymlaen be good! Llymlaen be good!", they cheered, overcome with joy as families once wrought with uncertainty were reunited with their loved ones. And thankfully the goddess was indeed generous that day with not a single soul sacrificed to the briny deep. Of the ten names who were on the ship's manifest at the time of its departure, seven stood on the beach underneath the pouring rain surrounded by family. But not all faces were present and so answers were immediately demanded of Wyznharr who answered thus, "it be a long story." When pushed by an angry woman, confused by the absence of her husband, the captain, still awashed in cheer, relented to the villagers inquiries. "One man chose to make 'is fortune in Limsa Lominsa!", he began, doing his best to yell over the foul weather, "an' one man chose to join a new crew. A third man, . . . 'e found 'imself a bride, 'e did!" A loud uproar soon followed and the crowd, drenched to the bone, moved to find shelter underneath the roof of the local warehouse where impromptu meetings were also often held. It was only at that moment that the cries of a child, after being removed from the rain, were heard. And the attention of all fell upon the tiny babe, bundled up in a blanket in the arms of Blyngeim, Wynzharr's wife and quartermaster. The following morning a great feast was held to greet the clear skies and newborn life. To many, especially among the crew, the birth of Nazaer heralded a blessing of safe passage for those aboard Wyznharr's ship. If not a boon from Llymlaen then it was at least the damndest bit of luck.

In the following years, the wreckage of the ship Nazaer had been born upon became a sort of playground for the village children. They would run across the decks, climb up the tilted masts, and play all sorts of games within the wreck itself. This was a simple time for Nazaer, a happy one at that, with few duties and a lot of time to run wild. His parents, unable to afford a new vessel or to repair the one rotting on the beach, turned their attentions fully onto the warehouse that Nazaer's grandfather had built. And as such Blyngeim did her best to teach Nazaer as well as his later younger brother and sister the trade both she and their father plied. Because while everybody in the village fished for a living, Nazaer and his family were responsible for making sure any excess catch that didn't end up on a dinner table was traded for needed goods or credit. Nazaer, being the oldest, was expected to continue this family business and so was often told by his father that an honest life, whether lived richly or poorly, outweighed the value of a dishonest one. Wyznharr recognized that, much like what occurred during his last voyage to Limsa Lominsa, a lot of impressionable young crewmen opt to sign up with less savory crews. A strong emphasis on self sacrifice through exuberant offerings to Llymlaen, the Navigator, was often stressed. As Wyznharr and Blyngeim both considered the goddess responsible for all their good fortune, a fact they made sure none of their children were soon to forget. It was through this strong work ethic and piety that the family were able to afford luxuries that few in their village knew. As time went with his teenage years approaching, Nazaer was introduced to a well dressed Midlander woman who was introduced as being a customs officer from Limsa Lominsa. And it was she and her associates who ever since the crash had assured fish from the village continued to flow into Limsa Lominsa. For a time, this woman was an unusual stranger but soon became another part of the background who'd meet on occasion with Wyznharr before disappear for weeks if not months. During this time Nazaer was still more concerned with superficially attending to his duties in between chasing crabs with friends when not admiring the beauty of Vylbrand's landscape. During one quiet afternoon, Nazaer was approached by a neighbor boy who suggested they steal some fish to enjoy a feast with their group of friends while shirking their chores. "Ah, c'mon, Nazaer! 'aven't ye got any courage in them bones? Or are ye a jellyfish in disguise?", the boy goaded, his age and popularity granting his words more weight than they probably should have. "'e'll 'ave my bones. You said you'd be the one doin' it.", Nazaer retorted as the two stealthily made their way toward a window he had left open earlier. After a few more exchanges it finally came that Nazaer would perform the deed, despite the boy having earlier promised otherwise. And in the midst of this crime Nazaer was caught by Grynesath, his younger and much more dutiful brother, who immediately reported him to their father. If ever there was a moment that Nazaer could recall in his life when he felt the true meaning of fear, it was when he was waiting in a corner to the sounds of his father's banging feet and booming, furious, voice. Tears were met without pity and soon the truth flowed from Nazaer's mouth, announcing all his accomplices. A summary punishment followed and soon after that Midlander woman who Nazaer barely knew the face of began to appear more and more.

Chapter 2: The Renewal, Year 1558 - 1575 of the Seventh Astral Era

The following year, it eventually came to be known that Nazaer would leave his tiny isolated village, cradled upon Vylbrand's coast, for Limsa Lominsa as the Midlander woman's ward. It was believed the local children were becoming a bad influence on Nazaer by his parents rather than the other way around. And Wyznharr, still expecting his firstborn to take over the business, wanted nothing more than Nazaer to grow up into an educated man instead of a buffoon who's a stooge for the neighborhood blockheads. During the Fourth Umbral Moon of that year, Nazaer said goodbye to his family, his friends, the only place he'd known as home his entire life, to board a ship with a stranger bound for Limsa Lominsa. With him he took a few momentos, like a amulet dedicated to the Navigator fashioned out of sea shells, given to him by his pious mother. "Will I see 'em again?" The young boy asked but he was only answered by a curt, neutral, nod. This was a difficult time for Nazaer who, still young, received little love from his mentor. And for that reason he felt utterly abandoned for a time with his mother's amulet soon becoming the only thing tying him to home, a distant memory. His days were now spent reading, writing, and learning numbers with little time allotted to do much else. But try as she might, his mentor could not remove his rebellious nature. By the time his teens had given way into manhood, Nazaer had already developed a friendly relationship with many a drunkard and no gooder at the various taverns dotting Limsa Lominsa. These unusual characters, men and women who made their fortunes at sea by taking what they wanted to spend it all on private dances and liquor, were hard for Nazaer to not admire. They had freedom which he longed for and on the eve of his return voyage to his village to reunite with his old life, Nazaer was nowhere to be found. Instead, the young Roegadyn had set out to make a new start for himself, a new name. A vessel captained by the Midlander pirate known as Rolf Midsummer was his ticket to doing just that.

The ship he found himself aboard was named the Wolfsbane, named so to apparently make light of the Sea Wolves who predominated Limsa Lominsa. While this would imply a great deal of prejudice toward Roegadyn like Nazaer, the opposite was true. And for the most part the majority of the crew was in fact composed of Sea Wolves with a healthy mix of Eorzea's other civilized races.**

Captained by Rolf Midsummer, a Midlander known for his obsession with the sea, the crew of the Wolfsbane became a new family for young Nazaer. Together they did was pirates will do and became a terror on the high seas for any vessel which did not fly the red banner of Limsa Lominsa. Ships were boarded, men and women killed, and loot stolen but always did Captain Midsummer enforce the set of rules agreed upon by the crew. They were that no children, old, sick, weak, or unarmed would be injured or killed under any circumstance. The idea being if you can't overpower them without resorting to steel then you don't belong aboard the Wolfsbane. Any treasure found, irregardless of value, must be equally divided among the crew with failure to do so meaning a dip in the briny deep. Never question the captain's orders during an engagement, to do so means deck duty for a month. And finally, a crewman is never to cheat at a game of cards. These rules were the only law known to the Wolfsbane and every man and woman who stepped aboard her deck, Nazaer included, slit their palm with a promise to the Llymlaen that they would uphold these rules. With that said, entrusting a group of high sea bandits to keep their word wasn't always that easy. But for each harmless innocent robbed of their life, a coin was tossed into the ocean as payment to the goddess, Llymlaen. As time drove on, which brought with it experience, Nazaer's prior education with the Arcanist's Guild led to him being voted as quartermaster for the Wolfsbane following a vote by the crew, it was unanimous. By then he'd made a lot of friends, met a lot of women, made a lot of enemies, and even fathered a son with a woman aboard the ship. The newborn boy, named Bleiwaht Nazaersyn, was cared after for a time by Nazaer and the mother, which included the crew as a whole, but it was decided that since they were passing near Nazaer's home village that they would dock there to deliver the baby to Nazaer's parents. This was a major favor but after a decade aboard the ship it was one which was owed to the Roegadyn by Captain Midsummer. During the early half of the Fourth Astral Moon on Nazaer's twenty-ninth year, a fierce pirate vessel sailed into the cove which Nazaer's place of birth partially straddled. By rowboat, the prodigal, his child's mother, and the baby, wrapped snug in a blanket in his mothers arms, made their way to shore. The initial fright was met with sorrow as neighbors, realized who had returned, informed Nazaer that his father, mother, and eldest brother had perished at the hands of Sahagin raiders. He was then introduced to his sister, now a grown woman, who, after sharing a moment of grief, he gave his young son to care after. Returning to the ship, the crew of the Wolfsbane spent the following month prowling the nearby coastline until happening upon a group of Sahagin who they promptly massacred. Despite this moment of vengeance, Nazaer remained shaken to his very core for some time but nevertheless felt grateful toward the Wolfbane's crew for doing as much as they did to help him in a time of need. It was at some point following this event that he'd even taken to using the name of the ship on occasion as his surname.

On Nazaer's thirty-second year during the Fifteenth Sun of the Fifth Umbral Moon, the crew of the Wolfsbane during a period of rest and relaxation in Limsa Lominsa were approached about an offer of land in La Noscea. A crew and ship known to the men and women aboard the Wolfsbane had already chosen to take up the city-state's offer of free land and pardon for crews who choose to leave behind their life of piracy. Finding their opportunities drying up at sea and the ever restricting authority of Limsa Lominsa encircling them, the crew voted to leave the sea. The attempt was proved to be a disaster and Captain Midsummer was himself killed, potentially murdered by a crewman following a heated disagreement regarding the manhood of those who chose to abandon their venture. Nazaer, who desired a return to sea, now found himself at odds with people he'd once viewed as his brothers and sisters. Finding no other recourse, he resigned as quartermaster and promptly left by himself back to Limsa Lominsa. And it was from there that he made plans for passage to Ul'dah. It was there that he started a new chapter in his life, ironically in a place almost completely removed from the ocean he has held dear his entire life.

Family

Blyngeim Toffbrynwyn - |Mother/Deceased|[Sea Wolf]

A loving mother to the end, her loss struck a chord with Nazaer at a time when home had become to become a distant memory. Her death forced him to reconsider many of his decisions in life, questioning whether he may have been able to save her had he been present. She came from a long line of fishermen, much like her husband, but the difference was that her family had a tradition of maintaining a close, spiritual, relationship with Llymlaen, their goddess. Although sent away from his family at a young age, this spirituality is something that Nazaer has carried with him his entire life. Every morning he prays toward the ocean for the Navigator to care for his devout mother's spirit.

Wyznharr Roehtoumsyn - |Father/Deceased|[Sea Wolf]

Rough around the edges and, like Nazaer, a massive man with a head of white hair, the elderly Wyznharr probably would have tied his youngest son to a ship mast had he'd known piracy was on Nazaer's mind. The decision to join the Wolfbane's crew broke his heart, especially since it was ships like those which came into the village's harbor to collect crates of fish which the pirates often preyed upon for loot, ships captained by friends. Yet, despite this, it was said by neighbors that he ever kept vigil on the shores at night to await his youngest son's return to the fold. He had wanted his son to take his place in charge of the family business but instead Nazaer had become the thing he perhaps hated most.

Grynesath Wyznharrsyn - |Brother/Deceased|[Sea Wolf]

A braggart with rocks for brains, Grynesath was nevertheless a faithful son and a man who valued, like Nazaer, the meaning of loyalty. He was a strong man who on any given day could switch between bullying or protecting Nazaer. But the love was there, it was plain for all to see and it's possible the two brothers would have formed a strong bond if things hadn't gone the way they did. He subsequently perished while attempting to rescue their parents, speared through the heart according to neighbors.

Slettwyb Wyznharrwyn - |Sister/Alive|[Sea Wolf]

The last surviving sibling, Slettwyb was the youngest of Wynzharr's children and also the most level headed. She was the apple of their fathers eye after Nazaer resorted to piracy, the one who could do no wrong. While Nazaer rebelled and Grynesath lumbered around, carrying crates the size of small boulders, Slettwyb stood by their father's side and learnt the trade. It was expected at some point that she, not Nazaer, would take over the family warehouse business and in the end she did just that. Although, you could say the passing of ownership didn't go quite as she would have wanted. With the absence of her brothers and her parents, the last bit of family that she has left is her absent brother's adolescent child. She cares for him as her own.

Bleiwaht Nazaersyn - |Son/Alive|[Sea Wolf]

Still very young, Bleiwaht was, like his father, born at sea. And for a time was taken care of by a band of misfit and foul mouthed pirates which happened to include his parents before being handed over to Slettwyb, his aunt. Like his father and grandfather he has a shock of white, curly, hair and piercing grey eyes.

Contacts and Acquaintances

Edric Ashford - |Former Crewmate/Alive(?)|[Highlander]

A former crewmate aboard the Wolfsbane, the Highlander Edric Ashford found Nazaer in Ul'dah with a young woman at his side. It was his daughter and he, being unable to watch over her because of issues back in Limsa Lominsa, entrusted Nazaer with his daughter's care. During their time at sea, Edric was known as a howling marauder who was unmatched by any aboard the Wolfsbane in a straight brawl. He had left the crew a few years prior to when the crew decided to take up Merlwyb's offer of land for reasons unknown. He subsequently disappeared as quickly as he appeared, leaving behind his warrior daughter who was already in her adulthood.
