Appearance

Veronix's appearance has remained mostly the same since he came of age. He has a slightly tanned complexion and short jet black hair with light highlights. Veronix's eyes are dark blue and he wears earrings only when wearing his coronet, which he considers part of the symbol of his being a Paladin. Veronix is quite fond of his armor, which he made based on designs from ancient Allagan heavy armor. When not wearing his armor he has been seen wearing a more formal set of falconers clothes. He has also become quite fond of wearing a yukata when relaxing, though that is a rarity and infrequently has he been seen in public wearing such.

Personality

Hobbies

  • Exploration, particularly of undiscovered places.
  • Airship and workshop projects.
  • Goldsmithing is one of Veronix's favorite past-times, despite infrequently wearing his own creations.

Likes

  • Helping others, and getting his nose into things somewhat over his head.
  • Diving headlong into challenges, despite the odds.

Dislikes

  • Others who would flaunt their own achievements publicly.
  • Waiting around for the plan, rather than just jumping into the action.
  • Despite considering himself Ul'dahn, he struggles interacting with Lalafells.

Favorites

  • Color:  Dark Green
  • Food:  Any type of seafood
  • Drinks:  Frozen Spirits
  • Scent: Fresh leather, cut wood, lavender
  • Place: Lavender Beds

Flaws

  • Impulsive - Veronix understands the value of ample time planning...but that's not his job, and he can become impatient if others take their sweet time in the face of challenge.
  • Straightforward - Much like his own impulsiveness, at times his words can get ahead of himself and he will sometimes speak truth not cushioned. He rarely ever means ill of this.
  • Hubris - Veronix is a proud man, both by training and by upbringing; while he rarely will flaunt his own achievements, at times his own belief in his own skill has lead to difficult situations.

Fears

  • Family - Veronix has little knowledge of what has happened to his family, and both his drive - and his fear - is learning what ill fate became of them.
  • Loneliness / Meaninglessness - Veronix has no family to call his own, and no family remaining. He is terribly worried about leaving a mark for others to remember him by.
  • Losing his Edge - Veronix has a worry about losing previously gained skill, and he is always attempting to hone himself to be a better man in the face of this. His own loss of his faculties as a White Mage have brought him no end of grief, and he is both concerned and worried about the implications of this.

Talents

  • By Blade and Shield - Veronix is a devoted Paladin, and lives his life by the oath he swore as a Paladin. He will stand by his oath through thick and thin.
  • Leadership Veronix's calling to a Paladin helped him to hone his natural charisma, and he is often one who call out orders in battle if the situation deems it necessary.

Abilities and Skills

Weapons

Sword and Shield - Upon the disappearance of his family, Veronix was well-versed in some of the more frequent combat styles of the caravan guards that his family hired from Ul'dah during their trade routes. Veronix initially sought to better understand their training styles, and he eventually became a gladiator of Ul'dah. His skill at wielding sword and shield saw him eventually to the Sultansworn and to becoming a free Paladin.

Magic

Belah'dian and Nymian focus - Veronix's ability to call to the Elementals has weakened, which worries him greatly. He has instead turned to other forms of magic, and has practiced both the ancient magics based on that of Belah'dian mages and of the ancient Nymian scholars and summoners.

History

Name and Lifestyle

Veronix is not entirely sure where his name came from. Veronix was initially born in Gridania, though he did not consider it his home - Veronix's parents were always on the road, peddling wares of various types throughout the three city states of Ul'dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa. Their trade route was primarily between Ul'dah and Gridania. Veronix has thus always considered himself a wanderer and a patron of travel.

Nicknames

Veronix became worn of hearing others butcher his name when they see his name only in writing, and it is quite a mouthful to say when in the heat of battle. As such, he has asked others to call him either by 'Vero," or simply by "V." He has little propensity for formalities, and he has been known to rebuke others who call him by title or by last name.

Current Residence

Veronix has no official place of residence of his own, though he does have his own small room at the estate of his Free Company. Veronix has always had a particular penchant for the Lavender Beds, and should he even find himself swimming in a literal sea of gil, it is likely that he will make the leap and purchase an estate in the Lavender Beds for his own use. Whether he will stay at it very long is another matter entirely. As it stands right now, Veronix lives in his Free Companies estate in Mist.

Birth and Childhood

Veronix was born a single child of Tybult and Zia Altaer. His parents were wandering merchants, travelers that would move their caravan of goods throughout Eorzea. Tybult was a powerful, stout man; strong with his arms, unbreakable in will, and a well known craftsman of both the metals of Ul'dah, as well as of stones and gemstones. He was a jovial and relatively lighthearted man that embraced the wanderers life and a good drink often. Zia was a much taller, fair skinned woman; but what she lacked in the fervor of her husband, she made up in her trades - she was known for her alchemical expertise.

When Veronix was young, he was allowed to join his family in travelling the route and trading with the various cities of Eorzea. His life was one that was full of adventure. As he grew up, Veronix had begun to hear whispers - and upon telling his father, they spoke with various mendicants throughout Eorzea. It was then that they met with E-Sumi-Yan of the Conjurer's Guild, and it was discovered that Veronix had been hearing the whispers of the forest of Gridania. Veronix's father was initially skeptical, but they later enrolled Veronix in the guild and he was made to study in the guild rather than join his family in their trade.

For years, he found himself in the the self-described "mind-numbing" situation of having to study and practice conjuration rather than join his family.

Before the Calamity

Before the dawning of the Seventh Umbral Era, Veronix's life had all but become 'normal.' Veronix's parents were gone most of the time, and he was left to the care of E-Sumi-Yan and the Conjurer's Guild. While E-Sumi praised Veronix and his progress, Veronix found it an exercise in boredom. He had grown up with and accustomed to movement and living the life of a wanderer, and as such every day he found to be tedious. He spent many years training in the guild, honing his skills. Little did he know that both these skills would come to define him, become a part of his trade, and more importantly lead him through the terrible situation coming after.

It was just before the dawning of the Seventh Umbral Era that Veronix's parents did not return from one of their trade routes. At first, Veronix thought it just an extended trade route. After some time passed, he abandoned this and expressed his worries and concern to E-Sumi, who encouraged him to have faith and continue in his training. Veronix's study suffered as his mind, once calm, was filled with worries and whispers of the other possibilities. He became worried about them being harried by bandits, slain and left for dead on the roads...the roads had been increasingly dangerous at the time, though a tickling feeling in the back of his neck worried that it might be something even worse. Veronix snuck out one night and traveled the various roads, the paths in his mind that he remembered traveling...but he found nothing. No signs, no stories, no warnings, nothing. It was during this time that Dalamud fell from the sky bringing the Seventh Umbral Era.

Seventh Umbral Era

The dawning of the Seventh Umbral Era left Veronix alone. He remembered little of what had happened, or how he had managed to survive the great falling of Dalamud. He remembered even less of his journey out into the wilds, though he knew that what he had uncovered was gone from his memory. Veronix returned to Gridania and the Conjurer's Guild, finding solace in this being the only real place he knew of as home. What few friends he had known were gone, and he attempted to throw himself back into his study of conjuration. His mind continued to be clouded with worry, and the once whispers of the Elementals were hard to discern. It wasn't long before he took back to the road, and found his way back to Ul'dah. His thoughts would focus frequently on those caravan guards that his family had sometimes hired - sword and shield wielding adventurers that were dedicated to the protection of his family throughout his youth. It was then that his mind was made up - he abandoned his study of white magic, and instead focused himself entirely in the gladiatorial arena of Ul'dah.

Veronix picked up the skills of the gladiators quickly, deft fingers well practiced from his many years of practicing the finesse of crafting alongside his family in their various trades. He was quickly able to rise in the arena, and found himself leaping to the aid of beggars and refugees in the streets of Ul'dah. His prowess and fervor did not go unnoticed. He was swiftly invited to begin on the path of the Sultansworn and he dedicated himself to prowess in battle and the protection of others. It was one young lady that he found in the streets and rescued that had mentioned a possible place for him to go - a group known as the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, dedicated to routing out existential threats to Eorzea. He joined without reservation.

Veronix joined the Scions and helped to lead in the assault on Castrum Meridianum and the assault on the Praetorium, destroying the Ultima Weapon and ushering in the Seventh Astral Era.

Seventh Astral Era

Veronix found himself a sudden hero, one who had joined in the destruction of the Ultima Weapon. It was at this time that he had found his way to his loyal crew (so to speak) - the Salty Spitoon, a group of similar misfits and lost souls who were gathered in their own Company. Veronix joined and focused his efforts in his crafting, working to make both his mother and father proud, wherever they may be. It wasn't long after, though, that his world was again turned upside down, and he found himself exiled briefly from the city of Ul'dah on suspicions of being one of those involved in the poisoning of Ul'dah's Sultana. Veronix initially fled and found his way into the previously barred lands of Ishgard, though this taint was not one that he could let lie with his name joined with the Sultansworn. Veronix returned and both plead his case, as well as assisted in the return of the Sultana to the world of the waking.

Heavensward

Spoiler notice: The following contains spoiler information about Heavensward and Revenge of the Horde. Proceed at your own risk.

Veronix spent the next many months in Ishgard, focusing his efforts on helping to stabilize the nation of Ishgard from assault both within and without. Veronix assisted in the uncovering of the true nature of the Ishgardian noble houses, and in the changing of Ishgard's political structure...as well as helping to garner the trust of the nation of Ishgard. With his stalwart shield and sword, he had begun to open the lines of communication between Ishgard and his home state of Ul'dah. Since, Veronix has continued to hone his skill in battle, and his own skills as a crafter in preparation for returning to Ul'dah and to help in whatever ways he can against the Garlean Empire, and to continue to rout the sinister plots that had once seen him exiled from Ul'dah. He has since returned again to searching high and low for news of his family, and for what terrible fate had befallen them...

Spoilers end here.

Plot Hooks

General Hooks

  • Veronix is actively seeking information regarding his family. He is positive that whatever had happened is not just simple assault by bandits. In particular, he had begun to hone his own skills in aetheric science and the ancient magic of proto-Belah'dia, in hopes that he might uncover more. If he were to hear the name of someone of particular knowledge in the aetheric sciences, he would likely seek them out.
  • Veronix is action-oriented, and is always willing to leap to the aid of others (both those in need, as well as those simply interested in challenge). An offer extended is rarely declined by him.
  • Veronix is a craftsman of some renown, and is always willing to come to the aid of others to help to teach them the trade. Those asking for help are rarely declined, and he is always willing to show off his work to others.
