Character

Personality

Vespino is at times practical and pragmatic and at others a bit of a wistful dreamer. He tends to keep his emotions closely guarded and his tendency to keep himself to himself amongst strangers can make him seem a little cold and aloof. But once he grows to trust someone he can be encouraged to open up. Under such circumstances he will talk animatedly about alchemy, the arcane, botany, the law and any number of other subjects though he tends to clam up when it comes to talking about family. Then a sad wistful look will come into his eyes and he will quickly change the subject. Vespino tends to stay away from alcohol; his travels have given him a taste for hard liquor though the results of too much ale or wine can be unpredictable leading to some embarrassing situations.

Appearance

Vespino Pino is a little over average height for a Lalafell and his sea green coloured hair is now lightly streaked with grey in places lending him a distinguished air. Whilst he will happily tell anyone that will listen that jewellery of any kind is a vain affectation which he simply will not wear he is inordinately fond of a floppy moustache which he constantly grooms and admires whenever he chances upon a mirror. His deep purple eyes sparkle with a keen intelligence and natural curiosity. His lightly tanned, slightly weathered complexion is the result of his recent travels throughout Eorzia. His small, calloused hands are usually smeared with ink and any number of other less easily identifiable compounds.

History

Born in the great desert city of Ul'dah Vespino was one of six children. His father, a talented carpenter, apprenticed his son at an early age and attempted to teach the young Vespino the carpenter's art. However, though the young Lalafell was undoubtedly talented he usually tried to shirk his duties and was often to be found in the city libraries pouring over ancient grimoires and dusty old tomes. Frustrated, his father had turned to his brother for advice. Noika Temboika, a well respected Alchemist offered to take the young Vespino under his wing to see if the alchemist's art would be more to his liking. Sure enough, Vespino seemed to blossom under his uncle's tutelage and proved himself a talented student. Unfortunately young Vespino had yet to learn either patience or caution and kept insisting that his uncle teach him more and more formulas that were often well beyond his level of expertise until finally, when he asked Noika to teach him the formula for a particularly explosive compound, the old Lalafell had refused, cautioning his nephew not to try and run before he could walk. More than a little miffed Vespino attempted to create the formula with the elements he knew and with others he suspected were involved. The results were catastrophic. The resultant explosion destroyed Noika's laboratory and left the old Lalafell buried under a pile of rubble. Vespino and other members of his family cleared away the debris in order to get to Noika but it was too late; the old Lalafell was dead. Grief-stricken and riddled with guilt Vespino had left Ul'dah soon after, too ashamed to even bid farewell to his family. The years immediately preceding the calamity saw the young Vespino travelling somewhat aimlessly, making a hand to mouth living as a jobbing carpenter until finally settling in the busy city of Limsa Lominsa. Here he studied law and discovered a deep and abiding interest in the arcane which was to all but consume his waking hours. When not working Vespino was usually to be found pouring over books in the city’s extensive libraries and went on to produce several theoretical books on various magical disciplines. The years after the calamity were a blur but at some stage Vespino secured himself a job as a clerk at a minor publishing house based in Limsa Lominsa and it was from this institution he received the commission to write a Traveller’s Guide to Eorzia. It was also about this time that he applied for and was accepted as a student of the Conjurer’s Guild.

Abilities

Vespino discovered a talent for the arcane quite by chance though he had for many years poured over books on the subject in the extensive libraries of Ul’dah. His regrettable earlier experiences with alchemy however have made him cautious and knowing that a little knowledge can be a very dangerous thing indeed he has decided to follow the conjurer’s path firmly under the tutelage of those with many years of practical experience under his belt. Though not particularly skilled with any particular weapon he is more than able to account for himself with a staff.

Affiliations

He is a member of the Conjurer's Guild in Gridania but his previously quite itinerant lifestyle means that he is not affiliated with any other official institutions as yet....
