GENERAL INFORMATION

QARAJIN BORLAAQ (Pronunciation: KAR-ah-jin), is a recent immigrant from the Orthardian Steppe where her tribe, the Borlaaq, have roamed for centuries. Rather than escaping oppression or seeking glory, her one and only wish is to return to her people. However, such simple a wish isn't as easily afforded as boarding a ship bound for Orthard.

Qarajin is cursed that none might learn her true name, or they should be doomed to die by the turn of the moon. She will give fake names, or none at all, depending on the need for a name. But most commonly, she will use the name that she borrows from a fallen Miqo'te comrade with whom she was partnered for a suicide mission during her first job as a sell-sword. R'dema Ahadashim.

APPEARANCE

At a glance: Qarajin appears, as first glance, to be little more than an amateur adventurer, though considerably farther from home than most Eorzean adventuring types. She is of average height for an Auri woman, bordering on the shorter.

Build: Athletic, svelte. As a result, she is small-chested (but not flat-chested). She has no qualms about this.

Skin: Her skin is dark earthen brown, and her scales the usual Xaelic blue-black.

Hair: Her hair is usually dyed dark blue with whatever natural means she can dye it. Though having been unable to find the means to do so since her arrival in Eorzea, it is turning streaked with lighter blues.

Eyes: Her eyes are of two colors; her more visible eye on her right side is a rich brown, and the left is white, but not from blindness. She often keeps this eye covered by either her hair or an eyepatch, not because she feels the need to hide it, but because the sun strains it so, which oft leads to the assumption that she is half-blind. It’s much easier for her to see in dimmer spaces and night time settings.

Clothing/Armor: Qarajin will most often be seen in looser natural fabrics that lend themselves to maneuverability and less so to defense. Her most-worn outfits are of linens and leathers, but she will dress for the weather. When battle calls, she has a set of scale armor passed down to her from her mother. It has suffered the elements and time, but she keeps it as well-repaired as she possibly can by her own hand. If enough damage comes to it, she will take it to be seen by those more capable and use what little coin she has for repairs.

PERSONALITY

Restless. Curious. Guilty. Qarajin has a hard time sitting still. With her homeland far behind her and her mind constantly working, she will make every effort to keep herself busy. She will often wander, as she has never truly broken her childhood habit of exploring against all advice. This helps her to know an area better, as well as to help her absorb more of Eorzean culture and language. Her curiosity and desire to learn is closely-related to her restlessness, and she will ask as many questions as her limited Eorzean vocabulary will allow to better understand this new realm and its denizens. Eorzea's varied and vibrant culture has been eye-opening to her, and she counters strange new fascinations and lifestyles all the time, most of which she is quite ready and willing to accept. She still keeps her tribal values close to her heart: Friends are as family, and their enemies, hers. She is never above sharing a meal, a drink, or splitting a reward. However, she still suffers from a large weight upon her heart and longs for home, and it is quite visible in her expression when she speaks of her tribe. She believes her hands to be steeped in innocent blood, and often questions whether or not she deserves to return.

Linguistic Fluency: Jin is fully fluent in the Borlaaq & Iriq dialects of the Xaelic tongue. She will often mutter phrases or curses in Xaelic. She also converses quite easily with Dazkar Xaelas and some of the smaller nearby tribes despite varying accents. (Dialogue in Xaelic will be indicated with "<>") Most Xaela Auri will have have little trouble understanding her. Since there is very little written word in Xaelic culture, she can sketch crude hieroglyphs, but cannot write in a Xaelic language.

Her Eorzean fluency level is quite low, being able to only speak in short, simple sentences. For the most part, she will point and make gestures to try to establish her intentions. She knows basic greetings, “yes”, “no”, basic pronouns and names for everyday objects, numbers, and colors. Sentence construction and conjugation are still a bit hard for her, and she tends to fill in the blanks with Xaelic words when she does no know their Eorzean translation. She will pick up on language rather quickly and take great interest in the art of calligraphy and writing, though she is currently illiterate.

LIKES

HUNTING. There's no thrill like the thrill of the hunt, and Qarajin's background has made her an adept hunter.

PEOPLE WATCHING. Be it on city streets, across the room, or two bar stools away, Jin enjoys leaning about people though good old-fashioned eavesdropping.

DRINKING. There's nothing better to unwind like an ale or heady wine, and Jin drinks alot.

A GOOD MEAL. Especially steak. Give the girl a meal, and you'll have won over a friend in no time flat.

DISLIKES

SELF-IMPORTANCE. Jin believes there's nothing worse than someone who thinks themselves more valuable than others.

BRIGHT LIGHT. Unnaturally bright light, that is. Be it magic or technology, if it hurts her head, she will doubtless complain.

BETRAYAL. And who wouldn't? Jin find this to be one of the single most damning things a man or woman can do.

QUIET. Quiet means peace to some, but to Jin, it means unrest and unease.

STRENGTHS

LOYALTY. Once her trust is earned, it not easily lost.

RESOLVE. A driving force in desperate times.

PERCEPTION. Jin is hawk-eyed from years of stalking wild prey.

COMPASSION. A golden heart for all.

WEAKNESSES

INNOCENT BLOOD. Those that know of the plague that swept her tribe will know her heart is heavy with guilt for the young girls who perished at the mercy of Jin's curse.

A MOTHER'S LOVE. Jin's well-respected mother is a hero to her, but hardly the mother she needed during her youth.

NAÏVETÉ. Jin's limited knowledge of Eorzea will be her downfall.

A CERTAIN RAEN. Jin's walls collapse when Gerhaz is in close range.

COMBAT & WEAPONRY

LNC: Qarajin’s main weapon is the halberd or spear, having learned to wield polearms from a young age. That said, the Borlaaq seldom encountered hostiles, and most of her combat experience has come from hunting creatures for pelts and food. She is quite a skilled javelin hurler, and can lethally hit a small target from ~20 yalms (60 meters--Let’s be real here. Those weapons are heavy and the in-game skill doesn’t even have a range that great. Olympic female javelin throwers have reached upwards of 70 meters, so she’s no slouch). Her training has continued with her introduction to Kaim, who has served as her mentor.

PUG: While growing as a huntress honed her polearm affinity, she also learned a small amount of hand-to-hand combat as a part of her training. The occasional breakout of a fight between her tribeswomen also gave rise to the need for an effective, yet non-leathal martial skill.

MRD: Qarajin also has some axe training, which is customary for the protective Matrons to learn while they have the title of Attendent. Since her grooming was cut short, she does not have the same skill with an axe as she does with a polearm.

Upon Request: Berserk. A latent power resides in Qarajin that will bestow upon her a rage so fierce that she hardly recognizes friend from foe as she tears through them with impossible strength. She is currently unaware of it, and it has only happened to her once when she was ambushed by an organized group of Xaela intent on killing her for reasons unknown. This ability is limited to a few seconds, or whatever it takes to turn the tide of a battle in her favor, and will only occur in dire, absolute need. Little does she know, her long-lost brother also possesses this ability, but he is well aware of it. Certain people would also spend great effort to prove that Qarajin is the true blood sibling of Rathan Iriq for this reason, regardless of the nature of their cause. Qarajin will likely have suffered grave injury or someone she cares deeply for would be mortally threatened for this ability to show itself, and once it ends, she will have the same injuries she had before, in addition to any others she might have suffered during the Berserk. She will be largely unable to fight afterward until she has a better understanding and a better control over this ability, though that will not come easily, nor quickly (if at all). (OOC Note: This ability is only "Upon Request" because of the almost unfair nature of it. I did my best to limit it in what ways I could, and it will be an incredibly rare occurrence in actual RP. Think of it like an EXTREME adrenaline rush, in which the normal "Fight or Flight" response becomes "Fight or... Fight". This is something I would DEFINITELY plan out with you to make sure everything flows nicely and no one gets annoyed with over-powered characters!)

BACKSTORY

Qarajin was born to the Borlaaq tribe five years after her mother, a tribe Matron by the name of Temujin, gave birth to a son and gave him up to the Iriq before his first nameday, as was custom. Qarajin never knew she had a blood brother while she was growing. She was being groomed for Matronhood by Temujin and the other Matrons until one of the elder girls also being groomed for Matronhood let slip the existence of her elder brother. Qarajin knew this was not something to ask one’s mother tactlessly. While it was no crime to bear a male child, it was never questioned why anyone would ever give males and keep the females, and Qarajin’s curious nature and interest in the shadowy Iriq tribe hovering on their borders had always intrigued her. She’d met very few males in her time; All those she’d encountered were the aloof and begrudging Iriq warriors, Dazkar males who rarely interacted with those outside the similarly matriarchal tribe, male traders from the Eastern Mountains, or hostile attackers that would see the Borlaaq absorbed into their tribe--or worse.

The duty of Matrons was tribe leadership, and having been groomed for this since her youth, Qarajin become a strong and respected woman amongst her tribe when she reached adulthood and finally adopted the title of Attendant. However she was wont to disappear from time to time, shirking her responsibilities to the Matrons to hide out on the steppe or spy on the Iriq tribe when the lights of their fires was close enough to be seen at night. The idea that she could someday meet her blood brother still fascinated her.

One night, she ventured close enough to hear them speaking. She heard talk of a Garlean force lingering just out of reach, and the plans to meet their would-be conquerors in battle. She knew the Garleans had narrowed eyes upon the Steppe--firey with intent to rein in and assimilate the fierce Xaela peoples--but never had they been so close as to pose a threat. Fearing for her own tribe, she spurred back to the Matrons to report the news. The Matrons were willing to overlook her negligent behavior for the moment, and gathered to discuss the looming Garlean threat.

Qarajin spoke out about what she had witnessed, suggesting that they contact their allies in the Dazkar tribe and reach out to the Iriq to form a war party. The idea was ill-received, and the Matrons stressed the conservation of their own over the conservation of a hot-headed tribe of warriors like the Iriq, also noting that the Dazkar tribe’s grounds during that moon would almost certainly mean crossing paths with other more aggressive passing tribes.

Qarajin, too determined to let the stubborn nature of the Matrons stop her, slipped out of the Matron yurt to approach the Iriq tribe that night. She was even less welcome there, as her first encounter with the Iriq proved to be more provoking than invigorating. The Iriq took her encouragement to approach the Matrons as a slight against the strength of their tribe. They insulted her, though she spoke of unity, after generations of warriors stewing about the nature of the Borlaaq prejudice towards their male children.

Frustrated with their hubris, Qarajin turned away, hissing that they should be slaughtered for their insolent and immature behavior like the mongrels she was raised to believe they were. The Iriq shaman overheard her and retorted, saying that no such a quick-tongued youth should come to lead the accursed Borlaaq, lest they be led to their downfall under her influence. Qarajin, who regarded herself as a leader already, could not let such an insult pass quietly. She turned back to the shaman and his tribesmen, quoting the Matrons that they might have all perished sooner, had the Iriq been allowed to remain. The shaman would tolerate her no more. He laid a curse upon her for her insolent behavior. To assure that she would never rise to power within her tribe, the shaman cursed her name. Any who would learn her name henceforth would die within that moon.

Qarajin, doubtful of the shaman’s powers, turned again, the whole tribe now watching her. She uttered her name pridefully, and turned away from the stunned tribe, most of whom did not know her. She reported back to the Matrons, telling them of the Iriqs’ hubris and the spiteful curse they attempted to scare her away with. The Matrons seemed leery of her tale and decreed that she was to no longer leave the tribe grounds except to scout ahead for migration. Just before their next migration before the moon’s end, they learned that the Iriq tribe was devastated by the Garleans in battle, and what was left of the tribe had surrendered or fled. Qarajin couldn’t help but wonder if her bloodkin brother was among the fallen.

Moons passed without incident or cause for alarm until the young girls in the village began to learn to speak. One such youngling in particular asked Qarajin for her name, and thinking nothing of it, Qarajin obliged the girl, who took her hand and introduced her to the other young girls her age, earning the nickname “Jin-jin”. A sickness swept through the village that moon, killing all of the youngest in its wake. All of the girls who had followed Qarajin through the village were laid to rest at the end of the moon.

Rumor of Qarajin’s cursed name began to circulate, and some wondered if it was she that hexed the young girls by telling them her name. A guilt-stricken Qarajin approached the Matrons at the moon’s turning, asking if she was indeed cursed. While some of the Matrons blamed her, others argued that the sickness was just a coincidence, as word of a similar plague had reached them from the Raen villages in the East. Temujin remained quiet through the debate before finally proposing to invite an outsider into the tribe to test the curse’s validity before they moved to decide on Qarajin’s fate.

Two nights before the next moon’s turning, they welcomed a trader into the camp. A weary Qarajin was introduced to a sweet female Elezen trader who stayed with them for two nights. The matrons kept close watch as Qarajin was encouraged to spend time with the foreign woman. Sure enough, on the night of the moon’s end, the trader succumbed to a bite from a poisonous vilekin of the steppe. That was the final confirmation for the Matrons. They immediately held court after the trader’s spirit was honored.

Qarajin was to be exiled until her curse could be lifted... if it could be. She presented too great of a threat to the tribe if her name was so much as uttered. With barely any grasp of the common Eorzean tongue, she made for the shore to catch a ship to Eorzea--the only nearby realm she knew of that was not under Garlean control--in search of answers and help.

RECENT HISTORY

More recently, Qarajin's ship had made birth in Limsa Lominsa, and there she tried to register for the Adventurers' Guild in hopes of earning coin. She suddenly turned away from the counter when asked for her name (much to the confusion of the guild liaison). Now out of options, she took to the streets to walk and plan out her next move.

As she wandered through Limsa Lominsa's lower decks, she passed a man petitioning the public for volunteer adventurers to raid into the nearby Garlean Castrum, that they might prevent the Garleans from salvaging tech leftover from the Agrius in Mor Dhona, across the Straight of Merithor.

Without quite knowing the risks, Qarajin signed onto the job, alongside an enthusiastic Lominsian native by the name of R’dema Adhashim, a miqo’te lancer and a novice adventurer as well. R’dema had noticed Qarajin’s limited ability to converse and invited her out for an ale on the eve of their mission. Though confused by the Xaela’s refusal to give a name, R’dema gave her the nickname “Scales”. The two shared stories of hunts and bonded over the similar lifestyle of the Seekers of the Sun and Xaela. Before they parted for the evening, R’dema promised the visibly anxious Xaela--who had never contended with Garleans prior--that she would not let any harm befall her. The Xaela took solace that her new friend would not lead her astray.

The following morning, the small troop of adventurers gathered outside the gates of Limsa Lominsa to march north. They were briefed on their mission and divided into squads. Qarajin had trouble understanding what the objective was and, to this day, it still unsure. R’dema simply led her along, pulling her aside when they were divided into squads. R’dema and Qarajin became part of a squad that would move along the perimeter as scouts, accompanied by another miqo’te healer who was to relay all information back to the main squad.

The mission, however, was compromised and they were quickly overwhelmed. The Garleans had the small scout squad backed up to the cliffs overlooking the straight. R’dema did what she could to fend off the Garleans, but was ultimately outmatched by their sheet numbers and run through by a Garlean Eques. Qarajin herself suffered injury to her left shoulder after being pierced by the arrow of a Sagittarius from afar, which made it nearly impossible for her to continue fighting. Kali then made the risky decision to pull Qarajin and herself to the cliff’s edge and both fell into the water below.

Though they managed to miss the rocks in the shallows, Kali and Jin still had to make their way to the shore just south. After dragging themselves ashore. Kali gave Qarajin’s wounds a quick inspection and healed her minimally, but she still had duties to perform, and the main squad had to be informed that the mission had failed. She quickly helped Jin to her feet and walked her to the nearest local haven: the Costa Del Sol resort. Kali called out to the patrons of the resort that a healer was needed, while Jin’s wound began to stain her thin armor dark with her blood. When enough alarm had been raised at the resort and Jin was taken from her into the resort’s care, she sped off on a rented chocobo to warn their superiors. She had promised Jin of her return, and though she was weary and largely unable to understand, Jin knew the Miqo’te would come back.

Jin was taken to a hut on the beach, minimally equipped for emergencies, while the anxious staff, most of them scantily-clad, fair maidens, scrambled for a healer or supplies to stop the unexpected guest’s continued bleeding. A miqo’te dancer in particular brought back with her a tall golden-skinned, golden-haired Raen who, though also barely clothed, claimed he would be able to heal her wounds. Skeptical, but desperate, Jin said nothing when he ordered the room be cleared so that he might have focus. The man began to carefully heal her, introducing himself as Gerhaz and patiently talking her through the pain.

Jin felt at ease in his presence, and once his work was done, the two idly talked through the night. Jin, though tired, insisted that she repay him for his kindness by offering dinner, which was a long-standing Borlaaq tradition offered when someone was owed for their services. Gerhaz was taken aback, though it was hardly the first time he’d been offered a date. It was the only one he’d ever accepted, though he didn’t know who she was.

Kali returned the next morning to take Jin back to Limsa Lominsa and introduced her to an associate and friend, Kiyo Malaguld, a fellow Xaela who took pity on Jin. The two offered to help her after hearing of the curse, and introduced her to the Nebulous Sabotenders to help her get on her feet and help her find a way to break the curse on her name.

FAMILY & TRIBE

These are mostly backstory-related relationships.

LIST OF FAMILY MEMBERS
Temujin Borlaaq, mother. (🔃)
QARAJJIN’s Thoughts: "I wonder if she is still proud of me."

Since Qarajin's sudden exile from the Borlaaq tribe, she isn't sure if her mother's love was true or if it was simply a means to continue her lineage and seat in power in the Borlaaq tribe Matrons. She struggles with this greatly.

Unknown, father. ( ??? )
QARAJIN's Thoughts: "I never knew my father."

It's hardly uncommon for a Borlaaq woman not to know her father or his whereabouts, but Temujin had never bothered to reveal his name. Qarajin had always wondered if this was because her mother didn't know herself, or if it was because her mother was withholding that information from her.

Rathan Iriq, long-lost brother. ( ??? )
QARAJIN’s Thoughts: ”I have a brother in the Iriq tribe. I know not his name or if he lives, but I wonder...”

Qarajin knows her mother bore a son five years before she was born, but this was not something a Borlaaq simply asks after. Unbeknownst to Qarajin, her brother had made for Eorzea long before she had. She still does not know of his whereabouts, but others within Qarajin's new free company suspect that she and Rathan may be related... namely, a Malaguld Xaela named Kiyo.

NON-FAMILY

Listed here are the non-family characters, both PC and NPC, that Qarajin has interacted with enough or in such a way for HIM/HER to form a real opinion about them. Please don't take personal offense if your character isn't listed here, or how the interaction or relationship is described. It isn't that I dislike your character or our RP. I just tend to only add these as necessary for those who make a real impact on Qarajin, and descriptions are purely based upon in character experiences and opinions!

* An asterisks denotes that Qarajin doesn't know the individual's true name.

LIST OF NON-FAMILY RELATIONS
R'dema Adhashim, the namesake. ()
QARAJIN’s Thoughts: "If only I could have done more to save her..."

Upon her arrival in Eorzea, Qarajin began taking odd jobs alongside refugees to try to make a coin or two. Often, these jobs would be in the employ of those with little care for whatever dangers they were sending the bottom feeders of Eorzea into. This was one such a mission, and they were sent to penetrate Sahagin lands to test the beastmen's hold on Halfstone. The mission failed utterly, and naught but a few souls escaped with their lives. R'dema, a Lominsian miqo'te lancer that Qarajin was partnered with for the duration of the trip, had become a fast friend and ally. Unfortunately, she perished during the onslaught, and Qarajin has borrowed her name ever since, allowing her to join the Adventurer's Guild under a false name.

Kali Soteria, friend. ()
QARAJIN’s Thoughts: "A kind woman whose heart knows little boundaries. I owe her much."

Kali the miqo'te was there when Qarajin's first job in Eorzea as a sell-sword took a turn for the disastrous. Qarajin was struck with an arrow in the fray, and it was Kali whose quick thinking gave them the opportunity to escape the battle. After bringing her to a more intensive caretaker, Kali brought her to Ul'Dah to join the Nebulous Sabotenders an begin anew. Kiyo made known to Kali the possibility that Qarajin and Rathen could be siblings.

Kiyo Malaguld, friend. ()
QARAJIN’s Thoughts: "She's so eager to help me... I can't help but wonder why."

A member of the Nebulous Sabotenders, Kiyo is a Xaela woman introduced to Qarajin by Kali. Both Kiyo and Kali seemed more than happy to offer their assistance with Qarajin's plight. Kiyo, however, also seemed to be considering other things at the time. Unbeknownst to Qarajin, Kiyo's suspects that she and Rathan are siblings, and would go to great lengths to determine if that is the truth...

Gerhaz Al'kodash, crush. ()
QARAJIN’s Thoughts: "Never had I imagined I'd meet a more gentle soul as he. I wish to know more of him."

The healer who attended Qarajin after her arrow injury was Gerhaz, whom she quickly found to be as gentle as he was attractive. She insisted on repaying his kindness by paying for dinner. She learned then that he was not a healer by trade, but a male entertainer at Costa Del Sol known as The Golden Prince, and the leader of the five Raen male entertainers that cater to La Noscea's wealthy.

Kaim Kralj, mentor. ()
QARAJIN’s Thoughts: "He is wise with a spear beyond what I thought was possible, and a great teacher. I hope to do him proud."

Upon joining the Nebulous Sabotenders, Kaim took Qarajin under his wing as a fledgling Lancer, and mentors her through her time in Eorzea.

ROLEPLAY HOOKS

Here's a few plot hooks that are sure to start an interesting tale between Jin and your character! These are just suggestions, and I'm always open to more. Please suggest away!

  • The Odd Job: Jin will accept most jobs--more fun if they go awry somehow!
  • Tribal Relations: Are you a Borlaaq? You likely know Jin. Are you an Iriq? Now you have a reason not to like her. Are you a Dorthal with something to prove? Let's duke it out.
  • You Look Like Your Mother: Father? Is that you? Or perhaps one of Mother's many 'friends'?
  • Cursebreaker: Adept mages or Xaela shamans might be able to help Jin break the curse on her name.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND...

Qarajin is not meant to be a romantic character. I'm sorry if this is a disappointment, but I have her set up for a loving life with my real life boyfriend's character, Gerhaz. <3
Please correct me if my lore is wrong. I'm still relatively new to FFXIV and I'm still working my way through the story (as quickly as I can!!) I'm liable to get things wrong. Please tell me if I do. No spoilers though, please!
Ask about plot ideas! Planning an RP isn't ruining the surprise, it's just a setup! If you want to try something, let me know!
Real life comes first. This goes without saying, but if I am tied up in real life, I apologize! I will put my real life before my RP life.
It's supposed to be fun! I don't care how outlandish a story or character is as long as it works within the FFXIV universe. Making it believable is half the fun.

GUIDELINES

I'm a pretty lax RPer and most things will fly, especially if the details are talked out beforehand. That said, there are a few things that I will absolutely not do or tolerate:

I WILL NOT...

Play a Romance/ERP. As I stated before, Jin is not a romantic/erotic character. Arguing this point will not get you anything. Please understand and respect that.
Tolerate Meta/God Mode It's one thing if we agreed to an event happening to my/your character, but it's even better to give me the chance to dodge an attack or take the hit. If it really needs to be debated, we can always roll for it, but talking it out is preferred.
Tolerate Rude OOC Behavior If you don't like my character, don't like where the plot is going, or don't like me as an RPer, just say so and drop the story. It'll suck, but I'll live. Don't waste either of our time arguing.

I WILL...

Be open to suggestions. Just ask OOC! Even mind control, drugging, and capture aren't out of bounds as long as they are discussed beforehand and will not be ERP devices. Using Fantasias for special events isn't out of the realm of possibility either!
Respond to you eventually. Chances are that if I haven't talked to you in a while, it's just because I need to be reminded, or because I'm too nervous to approach people first (this happens a lot--I worry that I'm annoying). Just message or /tell and let me respond in turn.
Try to contribute to your character's development as well! It takes two to RP and it wouldn't be fun if only one person's character was growing and changing. I'll read all the profile you can throw at me. I care about your precious OC/NPC bby too.
