General Information

Shin Kintsurugi is an Auri swordsman, a former handyman-for-hire, and a ronin of the late Asuna clan. He currently resides in the Lavender Beds of New Gridania where he can often be found working the main desk of his Free Company estate.

Appearance

Tall, white haired Raen of tanned complexion and "mako green" eye color. He ironically wears a skull eyepatch so children aren't made uncomfortable by his left eye.

Mannerisms

Shin's military background has taught him to be frank and his jaded nature can lead him to appear more pessimistic or critical than intended, albeit extremely professional in nature. Early Life

Childhood

Born under the name Yasuhiro Kobayashi, he is the lone survivor of a raid against his family's compound. He had a twin brother, Kazushiro, and an adoptive sister, Nanashi. His memories of his family are vague and instill a sense of confusion, but he loved his siblings.

Having suffered from amnesia and a gunshot wound to his left eye, Yasuhiro was found by a young Gaius Baelsar and given the name "Shin."

Adolescence

Shin enlists in the Garlean military at Gaius' recommendation. As he quickly climbed the ranks, he was hand-picked to take part in a joint project led by Alus mal Asina and Nero tol Scaeva that involved gene manipulation to create a pilot capable of interfacing with an ancient Weapon designed for anti-eikon combat. The project is called SOLDIER.

Project SOLDIER is considered a failure. Insurrection breaks out within the laboratory and subject E14 escapes. An injured Gaius van Baelsar reports the subject was killed, having died from injuries as it fell into the ocean. Alus mal Asina sends a clandestine squad of troops led by a SOLDIER, subject Alpha-ZERO, to verify the report. The squad finds itself traveling to the Shroud, where it encounters Shin. A battle breaks out and Alpha-ZERO would be forced to retreat and report back that he was defeated while his squad was simultaneously eliminated by the single blow of an obsidian blade, meanwhile Shin falls into a state of hibernation, encased in crystal among a hidden spring in the Shroud.

Awakened by events of the Seventh Umbral Calamity, Shin integrates into Eorzean society with the help of a Lalafel named Alataru as part of reconstruction efforts following the Fall of Dalamud and the destruction caused by the Elder Primal, Bahamut. The two would continue to work as handymen-for-hire and adventurer sellswords on occasion for seven years.

Adulthood

A Realm Reborn: Alataru is executed by Valens van Varro. The overwhelming loss and panic triggers an Echo-like effect, restoring Shin's unknowingly lost memories. A black sword appears and Shin transforms into Odin, destroying his pursuers. Shin marks a grave for Alataru at Urth's Fount in honor of how they first met. Shin goes on a journey to find the whereabouts of those responsible for the destruction of his clan, first meeting and fighting Gaius van Baelsar on several occasion, finally making amends with Gaius following the assault of the Praetorium with Shin helping him to escape after the destruction of the Ultima Weapon and Lahabrea.

Stormblood: Alpha-ZERO approaches Shin, warning that Aulus mal Asina has furthered his genome research and managed to replicate and improve the procedure that created the original SOLDIERs although their purpose was no longer to become pilots of the now-known Ultima Weapon thanks to modifications made by Nero tol Scaeva, referring to them now as Resonants. The two fight, but Shin is defeated as ZERO explains that their powers allowed them to copy and control the aether of a Primal, revealing that he not only possessed the power of Bahamut, but that he was also able to merge it with his own aether to become Bahamut-ZERO. Shin joins the Seven Scions in the liberation of Ala Mhigo in order to kill Aulus mal Asina, however using the Zantetsuken as Odin this time was too great a strain on his body, causing him to deteriorate into the aether.

Shadowbringer: During the time where he was without a body, Shin came to understand how to control his aether before possessing a clone of himself created by Gaius and Estinien. Shin merges the aether of the Zantetsuken with his own to create the Shin-Zantetsuken.
