His left leg is in a brace due to a past injury. His right eye is magitek, as his original eye had been lost due to a past injury. His left eye is badly scarred, but still has some vision. He was once rather known for his sluggish demeanor for the better part of a year due to his addiction to somnus. Now, kicking the habit (or doing his best to), he aims to repay the debts he owes towards others. This sometimes puts him in difficult situations given his history and his sometimes lacking good-social-manners. He claims to be a foreigner and has been noted to be capable of speaking and reading Eorzean, Hingan, as well as Garlean. His accent shifts invariably and tends to make him sound rather unimpressive/not-learned. He does have some difficulty reading aloud, but he does well hiding this by focusing and taking his time with the words. If rushed, he is likely to misinterpret things. He's known to be very cunning and perceptive, while generally playing the fool. Despite his rough exterior, he tends to have a very soft heart towards others. If ever possible, he tries to handle things without violence. Though, violence is not beneath him if it is what is required of him. He simply doesn't use it as his first choice. Aspects That Stand Out: ■ His right eye is missing. He typically uses a working magitek prosthetic in its place. There are times when he goes without and, during those times, he is very sight-impaired as his left eye is also heavily damaged. He requires the aid of his wolf-pup, named Axia, for navigation in such situations. ■ Both Nicolai and the wolf-pup tend to have a red fabric tied somewhere on them. It could be of some sort of sentimental value. ■ Nicolai is withstanding a great amount of pain simply to be standing with any weight at all on his left leg. The brace supports him, but the leg suffered extreme, permanent muscle-damage. ■ The tattoo on his left side of his face is actually a brand used to mark pirates known as part of the Confederacy. (Very-rough) Timeline: ■ Was an orphan that joined into the Confederacy in Onokoro at a young age. ■ Crossed paths with Garlean 'peacekeepes'. Himself and others were taken prisoner by Garleans for their crimes. Due to Nico Lai's ability with aether, he was allowed the 'choice' of becoming a conscript or to be killed for his crimes as a pirate with the other Confederates. ■ Was taken to Garlemald where he spent most of his years of maturing learning and training as well as having his past-life drilled out of him as a point of weakness. ■ Due to his progress and success, he was given an opportunity to prove himself by joining a small infantry scouting unit. It was his hope that, after serving enough time, he could earn his citizenship or even work further up ranks to better serve the Empire. ■ Age 17: During one of his final scouting missions, nearing the point where he and others with him would be up for promotion to oen Legionarius, they were attacked while scouting the outskirts of Garlean territory. Vigilantes aimed for their squad with the intention to free the conscripts from their forced servitude. ■ The Garleans, unaware of the reason for the squad's sudden disappearance, began to hunt them down as deserters. ■ The Vigilantes tried to smuggle their cargo of thoroughly Garlean-loyal conscripts into Eorzea with hopes of providing them refuge. When their cargo was uncovered by others as Garlean soldiers, their caravan was attacked as sympathizers. Nicolai was the sole-survivor left of his squad, managing to run away at the first chance he had. ■ Remained on his own, trying to find a way to contact the empire and explain the mistake in his deserter status. Made contact with a frumentarii unit and began negotiations. They struck a deal that if Nicolai would uncover other deserters for them, they would eventually put in a good word on his behalf to allow his return back to the Empire. ■ After one act of violence on him after another by Eorzeans learning his Garlean 'roots', Nicolai fell under the protection of a fellow deserter, Axia Arcadius. The two became inseparable. Ultimately, this leads to Nicolai re-negotiating with the Frumentarius to include Axia in his return to Garlemald. This requires Nicolai to uncover higher-profile targets for the frumentari. ■ Age 18: On the verge of turning in his own acquaintances, Axia uncovered Nicolai's dealings with the frumentarius. She ordered him to fix the problem himself. And he did. He contacted the frumentarius and scheduled a meeting. Before the meeting, Nicolai rigged the area with explosives and set them off from afar via fire when the frumentarius and his fellow-officers arrived. ■ Nicolai became wanted by the Empire for his crimes ontop of his deserter-status. Volcatia Volturcius, wife of the deceased frumentarius, personally starts a mission to track Nicolai down. ■ Captured by Volcatia, Nicolai was tortured for information that would lead to proof he was the one responsible for the murder of Volcatia's husband. Axia turned herself in with the plan to challenge Volcatia to a trial by combat. Volcatia fought Axia to the death, with Nicolai watching the fight in shackles. Volcatia came out victorious with Axia's death. Nicolai managed to later convince Volcatia to release him from his cell prior to being successfully delivered back to Garlemald. He took her hostage and used her to escape. Despite having the chance to take revenge for Axia's death, he left Volcatia alive. ■ After some recovery, he was again detained, this time under the supposed suspicion of being an Imperial loyalist. However, those who took him were Garlean agents hoping to use him to bait a missing Volcatia into their trap. He refused despite torture which led to much of his permanent handicaps. He was later rescued by the mercenary group (Marmots) Axia was formerly part of. ■ 'Present-day: Nicolai works to repay his many debts to the Marmot mercenary group and others who have aided him. He still thinks of the Empire as his home, but he has come to realize it's a home that needs to change to be one he could truly be proud of. PERSONALITY Nicolai can be rather snarky, though usually his sort of remarks aim to poke fun of others or situations or even himself. He can appear rather carefree, but there are times when his youth shows through in how he responds to some challenges. He's stubborn and doesn't have much shame in complaining or admitting when he thinks something is too difficult or not engaging enough. He can be childish, but he also has matured enough through experience to know when he needs to get serious. Despite outward appearance of being an annoying punk, he actually has the experience of being a trained soldier beneath it all. For those that know how to look for it, they might see it peek through now and then when he does show any form of restraint or discipline. MOTIVATIONS ■ Honor the memory of his fallen love, Axia Quo Arcadius.. ■ Repay his life-debt towards the Marmots and Axia. ■ Either see the Empire change, or see it fall. Technique/Weapons On the surface, it would seem Nicolai is only proficient at guns. However, when pushed into a corner, he shows his full arsenal. He is adept at a variety of magic, able to heal minimally, as well as manipulate aether in the form of elemental spells. He has learned how to combine his ability of summoning aether with his ability of marksmanship to create aether-charged rounds that can be remote-detonated into spell-enhanced shots. His specialty aside from elemental attacks and his caster-gun is his ability to create a protective shell around himself or others almost invisible to the naked eye. He calls the spell an aegis shield. He is able to create a minor shield able to maneuver it at will around himself and towards others, or, with more time and energy, a wall to cover more area. ✦ Weapon: Typically seen with his caster-gun. I am very open to gore and violence and am not beyond having my character sport an injury. However! Dismemberment, permanent damage, and even death needs to be spoken about prior in vivid detail/discussion before anything will ever occur IC. ■ Sort-of Grindstone rules: More or less everyone's go-to in the public-realm of RP. (using ingame /random rolls) We start with an initial roll to determine first to strike. Thereafter, roll for attack, roll for defense. Post. Repeat until someone reaches agreed upon number of blows. Or 3 as per Grindstone standard. ■ Free-form: I will sometimes be open to this form of combat if I know you well enough or am generally comfortable enough with you that I know any sort of mishaps during an encounter can be discussed and worked out in a timely manner. His squad never arrived at their intended designation and they were declared deserters. ( ♥ ) - Liss. Character's Thoughts: "At first I thought Liss just let me stick around because of Axia. After Axia was gone, I had no place to go. Liss let me stay with her and her kids. She let any of her mercenaries stay there if we didn't have a place. It took a long time for me to realize I was one of them -- that it wasn't just because of Axia. The other Marmot mercenaries call her Mother Lissa. I totally get it now. I owe her and the others everything. For myself and for Ax. Our home might not want us back the way it is now, but Liss gave us a new home and family to fight for." Nicolai has taken residence in what was formerly M'lissa's apartment. He once babysat her twins. Now, he does his best to uphold Lissa's values in keeping the apartment open for those in need of shelter. He also continues to work with the remaining Marmot mercenaries. Ensei'to Shuse, Brother? (♦♥ ) - Snowball. Character's Thoughts: "Did I say brother?? What? When? Hells no. Ensei is my bitch." Ensei'to and Nicolai did not always see eye-to-eye. For some time, Ensei was the one forced to deal with the displaced Linnaeus and they shared an apartment together. begrudgingly. They've had a lot of ups and downs. Some very, very low downs. But they now appear on steady footing together in comradery. Or as stable-footing as any of the Marmot mercenaries are with one another. They're a violent sort. K'toree Tohm, Babe. ( ♥ ) - Punch-cat. Character's Thoughts: "She's a little ... crazy? I guess? I don't know.. or just violent. Uhh, not that she is like that with everyone. Just everyone I've seen her around s'all. Especially me." A fellow member of the Marmot mercenaries, Toree once shared Lissa's apartment with Nicolai and others who did not have a place to go. With M'lissa's decline in health, Nicolai has taken over caring for the apartment and still allows others, such as Toree to remain there. They have something of a complicated relationship given Toree's feelings as well as Nicolai's difficulty letting go of the past and moving on. Helena Crystalline, Comrade. ( ♦ ) - Legs. Character's Thoughts: "I once almost made her blow an entire bar sky-high. Think I said somethin' about her parents makin' her a spoiled brat." Like what can be said about the majority of Nicolai's connections, he enjoys trying to incite extremes out of people. In Helena's case, Nicolai particularly enjoys making the noble-born woman lose her composure. Sam Redsteele, Babe. ( ♥ ) - Squirt. Character's Thoughts: "They're a little shit. But they're my little shit." Sometime after Nicolai acquired his major handicaps, he rarely left the apartment until he happened to bump into a hobo on the street. That hobo was Sam. It turned into an awkward friendship that they were now and then rekindle if and when they would meet up during Nicolai's rare outings that gradually grew more frequent. Sam is one of the few Nicolai has offered a safe place for within Lissa's (his) apartment. Aelfred Sigmundsson, Not a Masseuse. ( ● ) - Ael. Character's Thoughts: "Ael? Yeah's he's the one I go to for all my body-work." Aelfred worked, at one time, alongside an aspiring frumentarii. During that time, Nicolai was captured and interrogated. Aelfred's particular brand of persuasion left Nicolai with some of his permanent injuries, including the injury to his left-leg. Axia Arcadius. ( ♥✝ ) - Empress Character's Thoughts: "Amor animi arbitrio sumitur, non ponitur... Fluctuat nec mergitur. Nos obviam iterum in Elysium, amica mea." Sometime after Nicolai supposedly deserted from his squad, he found his way to the Marmot mercenaries. Initially, his approach was for the purpose of weeding out the location of other deserters in order to earn his way back into the good graces of the Empire so that he could return home. In the process of doing this, he became acquainted with Axia, one of those deserters. While others handled Nicolai's loyalist views with annoyance and anger, Axia attempted to reason with him. She more or less took him under her care and the relationship that blossomed there changed Nicolai's plan. He attempted to bargain for Axia's return to the Empire as well. It would require him to turn on some of their Marmot comrades, but he decided it was worth it if he could return home with Axia. Enraged, Axia fought him when she found out and demanded that he fixed the problem he created. He did, but in doing so caused their downfall. They were captured together and Axia was killed by the wife of one of the Garlean frumentarii Nicolai had killed previously. Volcatia Volturcius. ( ? ) - Snake Character's Thoughts: "I wanted her dead. She should have been dead. I should have killed her. But I didn't." The wife of a frumentarii soldier that was killed in a trap set by Nicolai. She, herself of Pyr status, made it her personal vendetta to investigate the mysterious and sudden loss of her husband's squad. There was no record left of their dealings with Nicolai, but there was word that the squad was working with a deserter. Through much work, they narrowed down their hunt that inevitably led back to Nicolai Linnaeus. She used her power and numbers to capture Nicolai. Axia Arcadius turned herself in and demanded trial by combat for her and Nicolai's sake. Axia lost and was killed at Volcatia's hand. Nicolai, then on course to be returned to the Empire to await trial and sentencing, convinced Volcatia that he only wanted to return home. Seemingly moved by his words, Volcatia let Nicolai free from his cell. Nicolai took Volcatia hostage and used her in his escape. Despite having the chance to kill her and take his revenge, he did not. And he left her behind, unconscious, when he escaped. Grey Ganajai. ( $ ) - Smokey Character's Thoughts: "My kindred soul. Or some-shit." Nicolai and Grey encountered one another one fateful night after uncovering their mutual (dis?)interest in a certain individual. OOC NOTES OOC INFORMATION Player Note ---- Personal RP Limits I don't have very many hardcore limits honestly as I feel consequences must be adhered to when RPing any character regardless of whom they might be. However there are a few exceptions to this and they are as follows. ■ I will play Almost anything that isn't described below. ■ I won't play ASK ME IF YOU ARE EVER UNCERTAIN. I play my characters out how they would naturally respond and while I do my best to ensure I do not overstep anyone's comfort-levels, I am only human. If I ever make you feel uncomfortable in any way, please speak up. ■ Nicolai is not one to leap into relationships as a character. Moreover, he is not an overly sexual character despite his over-the-top flirtatious personality. That being said, I am open to romantic moves on the character, but I prefer to be up-front with my RP limits about such contact. I prefer to fade-to-black erotic scenes, especially to make room and time for furthering of plot. I do make exceptions, however. But these are rare. Simply put, try to talk to me first if you have anything of this sort in mind.
