General Information

Shin Kintsurugi is an Auri swordsman, philosopher, ronin of the late Asuna clan. He currently resides in The Goblet of Ul'dah although he's often found working the main desk as one of several Directors of their Free Company's estate, in the Mist.

Appearance

Shin is a tall, white haired Raen of tanned complexion, and tends to wear a skull eyepatch over his left eye. The scars on his face are faint and are sometimes mistaken for tribal markings.

Mannerisms

An example of how one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, Shin has a virtually perpetual scowl. In addition to his blunt, to-the-point manner of speaking, it's no wonder that people tend to view him as rude, if not downright intimidating. In truth, Shin is quite softhearted although very few are trusted enough to see that side of him, granted he's not in any of his moods. Deep down, he's a very angry Auri with a heart of gold...with a core made of an even more intense, seething rage.

Early Life

Childhood

Born under the name Yasuhiro Kobayashi, Shin was a happy child, curious about the world, yet easily startled by it, regularly crying to his mother, Hana, who would console him with a pat on the head. His twin brother, Takeshi, was not so shy, and would occasionally lead him and his sister, Hikari, on adventures. The three were inseparable until one day, an attack would wipe out the entire Asano clan, including the Kobayashi family. Yasuhiro was presumed dead until discovered by a young Gaius sas Baelsar and adopted as his ward. Yasuhiro was blinded in his left eye as a result of the events of that day, and Gaius had given him a skull eyepatch, saying it would give courage to those who would wear it.

Adolescence

Having enlisted in the Garlean military under a new identity, Shin climbed the ranks over the years, and was accepted into the early research stages of the Ultima Weapon and its ability to absorb the power of eikons as well as an unknown magic that laid dormant within it. The research would require experimentation, genome modification, and additional physical augmentation in order to interface himself with the Allagan war machine. The procedures were said to have a near impossible survival rate, however Shin was able to manage on sheer force of will alone. Originally, he was meant to be its pilot, but during the recovery stages of his treatments he began to have echo-like visions and regained memories he never realized he'd had lost; that Aulus mal Asina was behind his family's murder in a coverup for a botched attempt to take him and his siblings in for experimentation. Enraged, Shin escaped from the deepest levels of the Praetorium with enhanced speed and strength, and was able to fight his way out single-handedly. Confronted by, now, Gaius van Baelsar, Shin would attack Gaius under the presumption that he was involved in Aulus' schemes, but was eventually overpowered by the Legatus. Pleading his innocence, Gaius urged Shin on, insisting that he would take responsibility for his escape.

A small pursuit force would follow him through Thanalan and into The Black Shroud, but a report from the returning soldier, Takeshi, that survived would suggest that Yashuhiro defeated them all with a single blow of an obsidian blade.

Adulthood

Having done freelance work for several years under a new identity, Shin Kintsurugi's quest for vengeance is foiled when he discovered Aulus mal Asina had already been killed.

Recent Times

Shin Kintsurugi had a final showdown against his brother, Takeshi Kobayashi, while assisting Gaius Baelsar and Estinien Wyrmblood in Operation Black Rose.
