Often found in the Lancer and Archer's guilds of Gridania repairing weapons for money or partying and adventuring out in Eorzea. He does not really care about politics, though he will be loyal to his friends and those of high status whom he believes are good people. Currently he is not part of a Free Company, preferring to be a free agent until he finds the exact right group. Once he knows someone well, he may begin to open up about his lonely childhood and the rejection from his community that he experienced. If the children can free themselves and catch up to the tribe, they are given a name and accepted as a full member of the tribe. Ryuk lost a beloved older sibling to this when he was a young child, and so, when he was in his 10th summer and taking part in the ritual himself, he hid a small blade in his clothing and was able to cut himself free. He then assisted the other children with loosing their bonds. This created a rivalry with another boy, the son of a tribal elder, who believed Ryuk had shamed their people by not allowing the other children to prove their strength on their own. Many of the adults in the tribe agreed, and this would follow Ryuk for the rest of his life. Teen Years Over the years, Ryuk grew more and more resentful of his tribe's traditions, and experienced mistreatment and rejection from all sides. Though he grew tall and handsome, most of the other teens would only spend time with him when they wanted to upset their parents. Despite being the son of an elder himself, he was not a welcome member of the community. Much of his time that would normally have been spent with friends and experiencing first loves were spent studying weapon and fighting and being lectured by his parents. He became one of the better fighters in his tribe, though he would eventually learn there was still much work to do to keep up with the seasoned warriors of Eorzea. When he was 19, the boy who had refused his help during the coming of age ritual provoked him into a fistfight which had been a recurring source of entertainment for several years. Which of them would win these fights was up in the air, but this particular instance resulted in Ryuk delivering a dramatic thrashing. The other boy ran to his father as usual, and Ryuk made his way home, mulling over the patterns of his young life. He decided that he was tired of it all and unwilling to receive yet another unfair punishment and lecture about his responsibilities as the son of an elder. He went home, packed his clothes and favorite bow, and wrote a goodbye note for his family which he left on his pillow. He traded some jewelry and physical labor for passage to Gridania, a land that seemed mythical in it’s opportunity and promise of freedom. Adulthood When he reached Gridania, he took on some small jobs to earn coin while exploring the country and eventually found himself performing maintenance on weapons for local adventurers, such as restringing bows, sharpening lances, and fletching arrows. Having proved himself trustworthy and knowledgeable regarding weapons repairs, he was eventually given the opportunity to display his abilities to the archer’s guild. Once they realized that his basic skill level blended well with the adventurers his age in the guild, he was welcomed into the fold for training. During the day, Ryuk trained at the guild and continued performing odd jobs around Gridania and the lavender bed. At night, Ryuk took advantage of the comraderie and freedom he found in the many bars, clubs, and private parties. For the first time in his life, his good looks and free spirit were seen as charming instead of irresponsible, and he began embracing the affections of both men and women. As his skills were cultivated by the archer’s guild, he began expanding his scope to the other shrouds, and eventually to Ul’dah, as he sought out more skills, more adventures, more dungeons, and more lovers.
