General Information

Shin Kintsurugi is an Auri swordsman, a former handyman-for-hire, and a ronin of the late Asuna clan. He currently resides in the Lavender Beds of New Gridania where he can often be found working the main desk of his Free Company estate.

Appearance

Shin is a tall, white haired Raen of tanned complexion and "mako green" eye color. Blind in his left eye, he typically wears a skull eyepatch. The scars on his face are faint and can easily be mistaken for tribal markings.

Mannerisms

Shin's military background has taught him to be frank and his jaded nature can make him appear irate or aggressive at times. Likewise, he only really knows three ways to react to people: 1. If you were his superior, he obeyed you; 2. If you were in his squad, he would die for you; 3. And if you were a threat, then Gods help you.

Having been raised a Garlean, Shin holds strong beliefs against the existence of Primals even after his defection and having witnessed the aftermath of Dalamud's fall following his reawakening.

Early Life

Childhood

Born under the name Yasuhiro Kobayashi, Yasuhiro and his sister, Hibana, were the sole survivors of an attack against his clan by unknown assailants. Escaping under the cover of darkness, the two manage to board a small rowboat and shove off to faraway shores to start a new life. But then his little sister notices something back at the beach. Yasuhiro stands and looks back to the beach to see what it is. A shot rings out. Yasuhiro is struck, losing his left eye, and falling unconscious. More bullets whiz past. A horrified Hibana leaps to shield her brother from the hail of bullets as the boat drifts further out to sea where a storm awaited them. Yasuhiro regains consciousness to the sound of soft whimpering. As his sister dies in his arms, the screams and wails that followed would be lost to thunder as the choppy waves take them under.

Some time later, a lone Auri child would be discovered by a young Gaius Rem Baelsar. Suffering from amnesia, this child would be taken under the junior commander's wing and given a skull eyepatch for his eye as well as a new name: Shin.

Adolescence

Having enlisted in the Garlean military under Gaius' recommendation, Shin quickly climbed the ranks over the years and was eventually accepted into the early research stages of the Ultima Weapon, whose existence was kept secret until after the Seventh Umral Era. This project, based in Ala Mhigo, was intended to reverse engineer and replicate the Allagan war machine's ability to absorb and manipulate the power of eikons, which would then be implanted into pureblooded Garleans. To facilitate this research, genome modification and additional physical augmentation was conducted under the supervision of Alus mal Asina, which would eventually lead to the development of the Resonant Project. The procedures were said to have a near guaranteed fatality rate, information that Alus mal Asina intentionally withheld from Nero tol Scaeva and Gaius van Baelsar. Through luck and fortitude Shin survived the procedure, albeit barely, experiencing occasional migraines and mild seizures.

During the recovery stages of his treatments, echo-like visions began to occur. Through visions, Shin received information and memories he never realized he'd had lost: Alus mal Asina ordering a failed abduction-turned-attack on his clan, the death of his sister, and Valens van Varro gleefully firing at him. Enraged, Shin found himself able to preconceive attacks while fighting his way out of the research facility until stopped by Gaius. Stalemated, Gaius stands down and allows his ward to escape, lamenting that he wanted Shin to meet "the new foster children". A small pursuit force would chase Shin throughout Aldenard and into The Black Shroud, but the sole surviving team lead, an augmented Kazuhiro oen Kobayashi, would report that he was defeated by Shin, now wielding an obsidian blade, and that his entire squad was bisected in a single blow.

Having fought off his pursuers, Shin found refuge in a hidden spring in the South Shroud and fell into a deep sleep.

Adulthood

Awakened years later to the destruction brought forth by Bahamut and the fall of Dalamud, Shin found himself without the black sword from before, and hitches a ride on the back of a passing wagon into New Gridania. Having operated as a Twin Adder freelancer for several years, now bearing the moniker "Kintsurugi," word began to spread that those saved by Louisuoix Leveilleur during the Battle of Carteneau had begun to reappear. Realizing this meant the return of the Warrior of Light, the remaining pieces were now on the board as Shin embarks on a quest for vengeance.

Recent Times

Shin joins the siege of Ala Mhigo. While the Warrior of Light presses onward, Shin confronts Aulus mal Asina who had survived injuries incurred during the previous encounter. Demanding information on the location of Valens van Varro in exchange for mercy, Shin removes his eyepatch as the Zantetsuken materializes in hand, his left eye bearing a mark vaguely reminiscent to that of a Resonant. Aulus makes a plea to reason, asking Shin what the Warrior of Light would think of his actions.

"The Warrior of Light is very important to these people, that's true. But do you know what else they are? Not here. What stands before you is the Warrior...of Death!"

Some time later, Shin Kintsurugi confronts a Ravana-and-Susanoo-infused Kazuhiro rem Kobayashi as Gaius Baelsar and Estinien Wyrmblood carry out their investigations on Black Rose and discover of the existence of new Garlean Weapons.
