GENERAL INFORMATION
Lasain lacked the pedigree, natural skill at arms, and innate talent of a paladin. The son of Ala Mhigan innkeeps who relocated their inn to Ul’dah, Lasain was a kind child who showed minimal promise in virtually all areas of life. His one exceptional virtue was a genuine desire to help others and express gratitude for his family and the nation that gave their family business a second chance. A friend of the family, an elderly paladin on the verge of retirement, noticed the young man’s good intent and eventually accepted him as a squire. Lasain remained a humble squire for fifteen years – a period so long that even he often felt embarrassed. Yet, during his time as a squire, Lasain developed expertise in the paladin arts and found his own moral compass. At the request of his mentor, he politely refused a position with the Sultansworn and instead became a sworn retainer to his mentor, which allowed him to dedicate his services to defending the people Ul’dah instead of languishing in the halls of the Chamber of Rule.
APPEARANCE
Lasain is an abysmal dresser. His clothing is faded, worn, poor fitting, and wrinkled. His outward appearance changes dramatically when he adorns armor, which he meretriciously polishes and upkeeps on a regular basis. When wearing armor, he unknowingly resembles most stereotypes of a gallant knight. A steel bastard sword inset with brass filigree accents rarely leaves his side.
- ■ Messy sandy-blonde hair, cut short.
- ■ Inquisitive jade-green eyes.
- ■ A plain, boorish face covered in patchy facial hair.
- ■ An unusually tall, lanky physique for a Midlander.
PERSONALITY
Despite his conservative outward demeanor, Lasain is humorous, goofy, and charitable to people who get to know him. Among close friends, he stands at ease. His personality in such settings is jovial, good-natured, and even mischievous.

- ■ Trusty Bastard Sword A gift from his mentor upon swearing his vows, Lasain carries a simple, trusty bastard forged of steel and embellished with affordable brass filigree on his hip at most times.
- ■ Pocket Guide of Ul’dah Laws. A pocket-sized guide to the basic tenants of Ul’dah law accompanies him frequently.
- ■ Practical Armor. Lasain adores his favorite suit of practical armor, which consists of battered, time-tested full-plate black armor and a white surcoat accented with brass.
- ■ Ceremonial Armor. A gift from his mentor, Lasain quietly resents wearing the gifted suit of ceremonial, creed-imitation armor. Although the armor appears quite stunning (and needlessly extravagant), he finds it unwieldly, uncomfortable, and highly impractical.
- ■ My Nice Clothes. The two most important women in Lasain’s life – his sister, Ranae Espedal and fiance’, Sadiya Miah – have painstakingly tried to update the paladin’s dreadful garment collection.
■ AFFILIATION... Sultansworn (Retainer). |

Background Narrative
Madeline and Gerold Espedal never envisioned their son wielding a sword or having any significant responsibilities. As a child, their boy was naturally clumsy, aloof, and easily distracted from his chores. The Espedals often relied on their son, Lasain, and his older sister, Ranae, to perform a wide variety of tasks that allowed their family-operated inn to prosper. Although Lasain usually exerted great effort, even the simplest of endeavors took him twice the time as they should, and he often made a myriad of hapless mistakes.
The Espedals’ “Old Gyr Abania Inn” was originally situated in a modest commercial district of Ala Mhigo. Opened by Lasain’s father, Gerold, fifteen years prior to his birth, the inn became a popular watering hole for merchant and travelers. The inn bore a rustic, traditional décor indicative of the Highlander tribes. Gerold, a tall, burly Midlander who nearly resembled a stout Highlander, had opened the inn after serving as a lancer in the Ala Mhigan military and stylized it to honor his distant Highlander ancestors. Gerold’s future wife, Madeline – a chatty, kind-hearted Midlander with a talent for multi-tasking and book keeping, became his first employee shortly after the inn opened. The couple soon married, had a daughter and son, and enjoyed prosperity for many years.
Shortly after Lasain turned seven, Gerold’s father learned from several friends who frequented the court of King Theodorac of the impending civil unrest. Fearing for the safety of his family, Lasain’s father liquidated the family business and hastily moved to Ul’dah. Having arrived before the surge of refugees, the family was able to purchase a small plot in the Goblet and re-open their inn.
As a boy, the Espedal family became intimately acquainted with a frequent patron who proclaimed they served the finest golden ale in Ul’dah. The patron, a veteran, elderly paladin of the Sultansworn by the name of Ser Mathieu Challender, became a close friend of Lasain’s father, and took notice of Lasain’s kind attitude and selfless behavior around the inn. Lasain enjoyed listening to Ser Challender’s heroic tales and admired his noble demeanor. At the age of eleven, as his name-day present, Ser Challender offered to take Lasain on as a squire. Lasain leapt at the opportunity.
Lasain was one of the worst Sultansworn squires to ever grace the Chamber of Rule. He developed a reputation for being clumsy with his sword, overly cautious, and a chocobo rider so awful that he frequently fell from the saddle. Ser Challender, however, encouraged the aspiring paladin and demonstrated great patience. Lasain gradually improved and even showed great natural talent in wielding a shield, which allowed him to hold his own against his peers while sparring.
As he aged further, Ser Challender grew increasingly frustrated with the inaction of the Sultansworn, especially when Garlemald’s VII legion began advancing on Eorzean soil. Ser Challender obtained a grant of leave to assist the Immortal Flames in repelling Garlemald’s forces, and Lasain accompanied his master on this mission. The master paladin and his squire were tasked with defending supply conveys, evacuating wounded soldiers from battlefields, and performing other essential support roles that made frequent use of the paladin arts.
The nature of Lasain’s relationship with Ser Challender changed dramatically a malm outside of the Carteneau Flats. As Dalamund painted the sky red on its descent and armies began taking to the field, Challender ordered Lasain to return home and defend his family, prompting a fit of protests from the young man. Lasain begged to fight alongside his master and friend in the great battle, but was refused numerous times. Challender, fearing that Lasain would die if he participated in the battle, persuaded him to leave by knighting Lasain on the spot, accepting a unique oath consisting of private vows, and making the young man his sworn retainer. Knowing that his mentor would not be swayed, Lasain returned to his family’s inn and rode out the worst of the Calamity.
Ser Challender was severely wounded at Carteneau but returned to the inn several weeks after the Calamity. Relying on Lasain as his sworn retainer, Challender began dispatching Lasain to satisfy his duties in the Sultansworn.
