General Information
Shin Kintsurugi is an Auri swordsman, philosopher, ronin of the late Asuna clan. He currently resides in The Goblet of Ul'dah although he's often found working the main desk as one of several Directors of their Free Company's estate, in the Mist.
Appearance
Shin is a tall, white haired Raen of tanned complexion and "mako green" eye color. His left eye is blind, faded white, of which he typically wears his signature skull eyepatch. The scars on his face are faint and can easily be mistaken for tribal markings.

Mannerisms
An example of how one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, Shin has a virtually perpetual scowl and seemingly foul mood. In addition to his blunt, to-the-point manner of speaking, it's no wonder that people tend to view him as rude, if not downright intimidating. In truth, Shin is quite softhearted although very few are trusted enough to see that side of him. Deep down, he's a very angry Auri with a heart of gold...with a core made of an even more intense rage.

Early Life
Childhood
Born under the name Yasuhiro Kobayashi, Shin was a shy child, curious about the world, but easily startled by it, regularly crying to his mother, Hana, who would console him with a pat on the head. His twin brother, Takeshi, being more outgoing, would occasionally take him and their younger sister, Hikari, on adventures. The three were inseparable until one day, an attack would wipe out the entire Asano clan, including the Kobayashi family. Yasuhiro was presumed dead until discovered by a young Gaius sas Baelsar and adopted as his ward. Yasuhiro was blinded in his left eye as a result of the events of that day, and Gaius had given him a skull eyepatch, saying it would give courage to those who would wear it.
Adolescence
Having enlisted in the Garlean military, Yasuhiro climbed the ranks over the years, and was accepted into the early research stages of the Ultima Weapon and its ability to absorb the power of eikons as well as an unknown magic that laid dormant within it. The research would require experimentation, genome modification, and additional physical augmentation in order to interface himself with the Allagan war machine. The procedures were said to have a near impossible survival rate, however Yasuhiro was able to manage on his immense force of will alone. Originally, he was meant to be its pilot, but during the recovery stages of his treatments he began to have echo-like visions and regained memories he never realized he'd had lost; that Aulus mal Asina was behind his family's murder in a coverup for a botched attempt to take him and his siblings in for experimentation. Enraged, Yasuhiro escaped from the deepest levels of the Praetorium and, with newly enhanced speed and strength, was able to fight his way out single-handedly. Confronted by, now, Gaius van Baelsar, Yasuhiro would attack Gaius under the presumption that he was involved in Aulus' schemes, but was eventually overpowered by the Legatus. Claiming innocence, Gaius urged the young Raen on, insisting that he would take responsibility for his escape.
A small pursuit force would chase Yasuhiro through Thanalan and into The Black Shroud, but a report from the sole surviving team lead, an augmented Takeshi Kobayashi, suggests Yashuhiro defeated them all, completely bisecting the lesser soldiers with a single blow of an obsidian blade.
Adulthood
Having done freelance work for several years under a new identity, Shin Kintsurugi's quest for vengeance comes to an end during the siege of Ala Mhigo when he discovers that Aulus mal Asina had already been defeated by the Warrior of Light. Aulus, having survived the encounter, pleads for mercy as the Au Ra materializes Zantetsuken before him. Shin removes his eyepatch, revealing his left eye to bear a red mark similar to that of a Resonant. A phantom of Odin appears, and Aulus is slain once and for all.
Aulus mal Asina: "You're one of them now, aren't you? A Warrior of Light? Spare me!"
Shin Kintsurugi: "Light? You've taken everything from me! There is no Light. We are the Dark Divinity, and I...am the Warrior...of Death."
Recent Times
Stuck in the form of a horned Lalafell, Shin tracks down the location of the sword Zantetsuken. Grabbing the obsidian blade, the Odinforce manifests itself using Shin's Au Ra likeness. A heavily one-sided battle for dominance takes place within the Plainsfolk's mind as the Odinforce consumes him completely. With the help of his, now, wife and her Free Company, Shin overcomes the Odinforce and reclaims his lost aether, restoring his body while finally coming to understand that he's no longer alone. Although his body had changed back to that of an Au Ra, his appearance now is slightly different from before. Shin Kintsurugi and Takeshi Kobayashi have a final showdown while Gaius Baelsar and Estinien Wyrmblood carry out the events of Operation Black Rose. Once home, Shin meditates, conjuring the Odinforce within his mind in order to settle an old matter on equal footing, as well as a newfound power.
Shin: "No interruptions this time. The question of who is mightier remains. ODIN!"
Odin: "Wail as thy soul is bestrewn across the plains of Valhalla. RAIDEN!"
With a smirk, the Au Ra opens his eyes. They glow of blue steel.
