IntroductionAppearancePersonalityRumorsStoriesMusicOOCCredit Jaliqai Qulaan ( Pronunciation: jah-lee-kai khoo-lahn ), more commonly known amongst those familiar with her reputation in the bounty hunting circle by the alias Red, is a Xaelan huntress hailing from the continent of Othard. A former member of a small, thought-to-be-destroyed tribe known for its exceptional prowess in hunting, called the Qulaan Tribe, she has since turned her skill in tracking down and pursuing her quarry into a marketable skill. The destruction of her tribe set her to wandering across Othard as a hunter-for-hire, taking on jobs tracking down whatever man or beast she was set upon, taking coin in exchange for delivery of the bounty to employers either whole or in part. Upon settling in Doma for a time to find work, she was brought into the service of noble Raen house to protect their financial interests on the road and to track down whoever or whatever they needed found. Yet a few years later, the razing of Doma -- an incident that Jaliqai was fortunately not present for -- saw her without home once more, and so she decided to join the Doman survivors in the exodus to Eorzea. Adjusting to the hunter's life in Eorzea has been a challenge and something Jaliqai continues to work on and acclimate to each day. Most days, she feels that it's a challenge that she's risen to, adapting more quickly and securely to the new land's ways than a good number of other Xaelan refuges. Yet some days test this conclusion more than others, especially with the establishment of her own company, the Gold & Glory Hunter's Guild and the management of the Guild's home, the Bountiful Chest Tavern. Becoming increasingly more mired in the business and social-political side of Eorzean life reminds her every so often of just how different of a world it is -- and how it is often times irreconcilable -- from that which she was raised in and continues to hold dear. Jaliqai stands rather tall for a female Au Ra with a sturdy physique ( Reference NSFW ) that belies years of dedicated training and conditioning of her body, as is common of Qulaan stock bred, raised, and trained for a life of endless hunting and sport. Her skin is dark and dusky in color, though her lustrous black scales and the numerous, varied scars scattered across her body accrued over her hunting career still stand out in stark contrast. She gives the impression of someone who takes great pride in their looks, with her neat and well-kept appearance when out and about. Her face is almost always made up, with her lips painted a dark red and the brighter red coloration at the corners of her golden eyes permanently inked into her skin. Her naturally ink-black hair has grown out in recent moons to brush almost the center of her back, with the shorter bangs framing her face cut with dyed strands of red. FACE CLAIM : Zuleyka Silver. VOICE CLAIM : Gemma Whelan as Yara Greyjoy (Game of Thrones), with a somewhat less refined accent. ( SAMPLE -- S06 Spoilers, NSFW ; SAMPLE -- S06 Spoilers ). SCARRING : To say that Jaliqai's body is a patchwork of scarring would be an understatement. In fact, the only place (mostly) devoid of scarring on her would be from the neck up. Perhaps vainly, she goes to great pains to avoid any sort of facial injury that could scar and spares no expense in its treatment when such avoidance isn't possible. While not grossly disfiguring, their presence is so prolific across her body that coming up with a 'scar map' reference for her would be almost impossible. However, among these mostly non-descript scars accrued over years and years of hunting and fighting, there are a few in particular that stand out: Bullet Wounds . . . Three rough, raised scars trailing down the left side of her body; one at her shoulder just below the collarbone, another on her side, and the last just above the rise of her hip. She came by these in the Qulaan tribe's attack on the Garleans. In a way, these injuries saved her life that night, debilitating her to the point that while not killed, she was unable to keep fighting and was thus captured alive. Still, they're a source of great inner conflict and uncomfortable reminders for her. Bite Wound . . . A loosely crescent-shaped scar on her left ass cheek. It's not got a particularly traumatizing story like the former -- simply a rather amusing marking left from a hunting injury sustained years and years ago. TATTOOS : Jaliqai actually has two of these, both of which carry significant personal meaning for her: Doman Calligraphy . . . Found between her shoulder blades. The Doman saying ‘kishi kaisei’ ( 起死回生 ) is written into the skin there in a thick, dark calligraphic style ( loose reference ). Translating to ‘Wake from death and return to life’, she took on this tattoo when she finally stopped running from her past and decided to start living -- truly living -- once more. Mark of Mourning . . . Found at the outer corners of her eyes. This tattoo simply looks like eye make-up, but was actually inked permanently into her skin as a symbol of mourning for someone that she lost in the razing of Doma -- a twist upon her own tribe's customs for expressing grief for lost loved ones with an additional hint of personal meaning besides. CLOTHING : Jaliqai has actually developed quite the liking for Eorzean and Doman fashion over the pelts, hides, and leathers that she was raised with. Especially now that she's given up her more nomadic lifestyle, settled, and come by a steady source of coin for herself, she's often found dressed particularly well. Nor does she seem particularly concerned with the issue of modesty, often picking out clothing that allows her to show off her body and the scars upon it like a champion proudly displaying their trophies. Determined. Temperamental. Loyal. While others may once have commonly found the Xaela's personality off-putting, with a razor sharp tongue and an mercilessly blunt manner, moons spent as the leader and public face of her Guild, not to mention deepening personal relationships with those around her has seen that soften considerably over time. While the woman's more unreserved nature isn't gone, it has simply been pushed beneath the surface now as she makes a conscious effort to keep it in check. Until, of course, someone says or does something to earn her ire. She's still very much possessed of a terribly mercurial temperament inherited from her mother, her mood wont to change at the drop of a hat when slighted or offended. One moment she could be all grins and laughter, and the next could see her turn surly and aggressive. While she tries her best not to rise to meaningless bait nowadays, there are a few things that instantly have her snarling and snapping -- of which, the threatening of the Guild or any under its roof being primary. Her increasing amount of self-control besides, her naturally predatory nature still tends to stick out most of all. She's of the habit of watching people and judging them them up as a beast would its prey. Calculating motives, sizing them up, gathering information. It is something that began as a simple personality trait that became a heavily trained skill, utilized both in her time as a tracker within her tribe and as a bounty hunter outside of it Still, despite other shortcomings, her upbringing and her nature itself has instilled within her with a deep sense of loyalty and a natural orientation towards functioning in a group setting. Once one does earn her respect, she's a fierce ally to have at one's back and would hunt any that do them harm to the ends of the world and back. The same extends to those who the Xaelan woman comes to consider to be 'one of her own', whether that's a close ally, a member of the Guild, or a tribe mate. Likes HUNTING : As a member of the Qulaan tribe, famed for their hunting prowess, the Hunt is what Jaliqai lives for. The more challenging and tricky the hunt is, the more she enjoys it. GOOD COMPANY : It is in Jaliqai's blood itself to be a social creature, and so she very much thrives in situations where she can regularly enjoy some good company. THE OUTDOORS : As someone raised on the Steppes, it's only natural that she would prefer being outdoors far more than being trapped inside a building or room. CHILDREN : Jaliqai very much has a soft spot for children. She's not the type to baby-talk and babble at them ridiculously, but she's perfectly content to watch them or play with them, and she would willingly die before allowing any child to come to harm. Dislikes GARLEANS : Jaliqai doesn't have much in the way of tolerance for Garlean people nor anything they've had their hands upon. She's surly with them at best and potentially even violent or murderous in certain circumstances. WEAKNESS : Weakness was seen as an ultimate taboo in her culture, and so it is something that Jaliqai doesn't allow herself to show as well as something that she judges harshly in others. BETRAYAL : Those who would betray their own are less than beasts to her. Even most animals are loyal to their own. WASTEFULNESS : Wastefulness of anything is a big 'no go' for Jaliqai, whether it's wasting food, drink, or especially one's quarry. It's the ultimate disrespect to a creature that gave you a good Hunt. SWEETS : No especially poignant story here -- she just doesn't possess much of a taste for sugary, unnatural sweets in general. Strengths LOYAL : Likely Jaliqai's most prevalent strength. Her loyalty runs deep and true once it is earned, and it would take an act of the gods for it to waver and far more for her to ever betray something or someone to which she's become loyal. CLEVER : She may not be educated like most 'civilized' standards and there are a great many things that she's still ignorant of. But all the same, Jaliqai is a clever, logical, and methodical woman. Just because she isn't 'educated' is far from saying she isn't smart. STRONG-WILLED : Once Jaliqai sets her mind upon something, she does it and doesn't cease until she is finished. Her resolve and will is strong, and to say that she's determined is putting it lightly. OBSERVANT : Jaliqai is exceptionally sharp when it comes to watching people, from analyzing not only what is said but how it's said, the slightest cues from one's body language, and so on. MULTILINGUAL : A practical strength. Her mother tongue is the Qulaani dialect of the Xaelan language. However, she's also fluent in spoken Doman (but not literate) and both fluent and reasonably literate in Eorzean. Her accent and manner of speaking tend to change drastically in each language, however, reflective of the sources from which she learned each. Weaknesses LOW AETHERIC CAPACITY : Jaliqai has a severely limited capacity for aetheric influences, changes, or manipulation. Casting is impossible for her, and aetheric travel is difficult. She has to be touching an aetheryte crystal to do so, and even then, it makes her violently ill afterwards. As such, she only uses it in emergency situations. Even aetheric methods of healing seem to have limited effect upon her. MILD PTSD : As the time since the massacre of her tribe increases, the severity of this condition has eased off. Yet particularly in times of stress or during significant times of the year, it tends to flare again. She's prone to vivid night terrors and extremely heightened sensitivity and paranoia, and tends to turn to the whiskey bottle to cope with them -- a problem all of its own. MORAL COMPASS : Though she's been able to adjust her ways somewhat since leaving in her tribe, the environment and culture in which she was raised has instilled in her a moral compass sometimes not compatible with that of Eorzeans. Her perspective on what is 'right' and 'wrong' can very easily put her at odds with others and society at large because of this. SELF-DOUBT : This personality flaw has haunted her since her early adulthood. While she might appear self-confident at all times -- an image projected to others -- she actually possesses a great amount of doubt within her, about her ongoing inability to create a family, her leadership, and ever her identity itself. Fears LOSS : Loss is something that has always seemed to follow Jaliqai, a shadow that she cannot seem to shake. It's little surprise that it ranks as the worst of her fears, and tends to express itself best as an unwillingness to let most others get too close to her. AIRSHIPS : A mundane fear is there ever was one, Jaliqai is absolutely terrified of airships. She doesn't see how something that large and heavy can possibly fly. It isn't natural and she doesn't trust the devices at all. Trivia FAVORITE FOOD : Anything hearty, meaty, and filling without being too pompous and needlessly fancy. FAVORITE DRINK  : Whiskey, without a doubt, especially the Ala Mhigan whiskey by the name Griffinheart served at her own tavern. FAVORITE COLOR  : Red, naturally. Gold's a close second. FAVORITE ANIMAL  : Wolves, and not the gnarled beasts of Eorzean stock. The wolves she knows are beautiful beasts, with whom the Qulaani readily claim kinship.
