The curious magitek researcher Diane Alexander happened by the hunter Guillaume Fantome by utter accident. During one of her expeditions to an aetherial site, the hyuran woman's caravan came under attack by rebels believing her cargo to be weapons for the Garlean Empire. The duskwight, Guillaume, was hunting for game nearby and sprinted towards the sounds of battle. He found the woman fleeing the assault, firing a magitek pistol behind her, when their eyes met. Diane's first reaction was to aim the pistol at the elezen. He aimed his bow back at her, yet strangely, something bid him to lower his weapon. He beckoned to her, telling her that all would be well if she followed. Taking the chance, the imperial stowed away the gun and followed Guillaume to safety. Neither one could understand why they trusted the other, but they knew there was something special between them. Guillaume would assist her in returning to the laboratory dorms she resided in and faded back into the night. Diane returned to her employer, Edis Krad Malphret who appeared worried beyond belief, but did not inquire to how she came to return from the rebel attack. The scientist was much too concerned with trying to impress Nael Van Darnus with a new weapon for the future conquering of territory not yet under Imperial rule. Rumors had been spreading that the once kind, yet determined garlean had begun experimenting on himself causing his mind to constantly seem elsewhere of late. It was because of this that Diane found herself able to sneak away in the forests where Guillaume would find her. The two would chat often about where they came from, of Guillaume's late wife Julie Anne and their son D'Andre, and Diane's magitek research. Although the two were from two different worlds, love won out in the end, and Diane decided one night to abandon her life of creating weapons of destruction for a life of love and peace with Guillaume, far from her Imperial labs in a cavern community known as The Calm. It wasn't long until their son Juste was born. He was small for an elezen, even as a boy. His hair a light gold and his eyes like pearls. The boy hungered for knowledge like his mother, and wasn't afraid to put it into action. His half-brother D'Andre watched over Juste, and helped the smaller elezen become more acquainted with their commune, whom had been wary of the mating of elezen and hyur. Juste was, at first, shunned from many of the children, as he was "half-imperial" they believed he would spontaneously decide to attack them when their backs were turned. It was the wild and long-eared elezen Toby-Luc Galivier that decided it was his duty to teach Juste the ways of the world, and take the boy under his wing. The irony of this was that Toby-Luc was the same age as Juste, and the smaller elezen was obviously more intelligent than the former. Yet they became thick as thieves regardless. While Juste and Toby-Luc quickly became known throughout the cavern community within the woods, Juste happened to grab the notice of a young girl named Jeanette Delacroix. While so young, Juste and Jeanette did show a fondness for one another, the small elezen often "saving" her from chores or watching the stars with her. He swore to always protect her... and perhaps when they were older... they could become married.

Edis Krad Malphret, now known as ''Malphret the Mad'', had driven himself insane with his own aetherial experimentations on his mind. In his insanity, he took flames to the forest, taking out his frustration on the rebels that lived somewhere within. The soldiers he took with him came across The Calm, and Malphret found himself furious that one of his own researchers had defected (He had not noticed Diane's entire ten-year absence). His first order was to burn the entire village, and he shot Diane and Guillaume as they attempted to shield their sons. He turned the magitek pistol on the boys and Juste, in a cry of anger, screamed at the madman. Aether flowed forward and threw the garlean backward by several feet, and Malphret ordered an immediate ceasefire. Standing again, the madman thought of a better idea of how to use the village residents. If a boy has so much power, why not the rest? Malpret seized them all and burned The Calm to the ground, taking his captives back to his labs. His first attempt was to make them into servants of the Empire, promising each individual the release of the rest of the clan if they complied, and many did. Juste was no exception, he would do anything to save the rest of his clan. He would fight better, faster than the rest, and his skill with magic was unmatched. The wickedness of Malphret knew no bounds however, and he tested the elezen harder and harder over the course of five years. And still he fought for his brother D'Andre, for his best friend Toby-Luc, and his love Jeanette. He had even been able to find a way to craft a small ring from metal in a scrap heap and carve the word ''Forever'' around its band. When Juste had turned fifteen, he made a gift of the ring to the girl, as hope of their escape seemed false. It was a promise, that no matter what happened, they would be eternally together. All the while, Juste feared what he was becoming and often spoke of his unworthiness to Jeanette. The girl loved him with all her heart however, Juste being the single reason she had continued to live.

With Nael Van Darnus's campaign to conquer Eorzea becoming nearer, Malphret decided to put his final plan into effect. His greatest invention, the Aether Eye, could be synched into a person and allow them to draw in more aether than a normal being could. While the death ratio was in the 80% range, the madman continued to test its capabilities on select number of his captives. He commissioned for his best slave warrior, Juste to be next for the experiment. The boy struggled and fought, all in vain. Malphret plucked the boy's left eye from his head and installed the Aether Eye. In a sudden rush of aether, the boy was almost consumed by his own new power. As fate would dictate, Juste was able to control the flow in the end. Malphret, satisfied with his work, installed another of his magitek designs, the Will-Circle, around the boy's neck. Doubling as a shock-collar and a mind control device, Malphret busied himself by making the boy slay other slaves in the complex. When Malphret had a dozen other beings that had been able to control the Aether Eye, the garlean scientist fired up his airship that would carry him and his collection of Aether-Eye soldiers to the frontlines to Eorzea, and they would fly into the Alliance's frontlines and strike from within. Before take-off, Malphret instructed Juste to kill every last member of his clan against the boy's will. Unable to control his actions, he mindlessly slaughtered everyone he had grown up with, even his beloved Jeanette, who embraced him still, with his sword in her chest. She whispered her undying love, forgiveness, and goodbyes into his ear, and fell... never to rise.

"You are a good man, Juste. You are as the Gods intended. I loved you then, as I love you now. Never forget... who you are." ~The Last Words of Jeanette Delacroix

Juste Fantome is the product of an aetherial experiment created by Garlean "mad" scientist, Edis Krad Malphret. After enhancing the young elezen with the ability to further manifest aether with an augmented eye, Malphret would bend the captive to his own will. Mind-controlled and armed with a wicked spell-blade, Aunzeriuth, and his Aether Eye, he tore into the forces of the Eorzean Alliance. It was not until his final showdown with Ikus Agapor, Leader of a mercenary group, Lost Rogues, that Juste was finally disarmed. When he begged for death, Ikus instead held his blade high, and destroyed the mind control device. After Ikus carried the young elezen to their makeshift encampment, Dalamud exploded, showering the world in destruction and light. Juste would now wander Eorzea, seeking redemption for all the sorrow he has caused.

"So I only got one question... why'd you let some toddler scribble that shite all over your face?"

"I think you'll find, I never asked for this." ~Augustine Frost and Juste Fantome.

Juste was born as a light-grey skinned duskwight in a small settlement within the Garlean Empire. He is shorter than many of his kind and sports long, light-blond hair. While he was born with two eyes as pale as the moon, his left eye was replaced with the Violet Eye, a product of Edis Krad Malphret, which allows him to manifest aether in the air, as well as store a great amount within him, making spells much more powerful and devastating. When he was younger, his eyes were much wider and happier; His ears much more pointed. However, when he was recaptured by Malphret in 1577, the mad scientist replaced his Violet Eye with the much more powerful Crimson Eye. The aether it absorbed was, at first, too much for Juste to handle, and it attempted to consume Juste, turning him into a monster. The elezen was able to contain the magic, but not before it distorted his face, making him look much older; his eyes more narrow, his ears slightly shifted downward, and locks of his hair turned blood-red. An ascian brand adorns itself around Juste's Aether Eye, at first violet, yet curiously, now has become crimson, and changed its pattern. Juste has no idea why it exists, only that it appeared right before he lost consciousness at the Battle of Carteneau. If fate were kinder, Juste would be considered a prodigy, as he excels at nearly everything he does.

Personality & Mannerisms

Juste is very reserved, often not speaking unless spoken to first. He prefers to plan his actions out carefully before acting rashly. That being said, he is quick to conjure a solution of issues that arise around him, and solve them quickly. Juste suffers from allowing strangers to walk all over him, often not responding after being insulted or ignoring being shoved or kicked around. Juste also boasts a higher standard of proper etiquette, referring to women as "milady" and men as "ser." In fact, he places most people far above himself, greeting strangers with utmost respect. This is, of course, if they introduce themselves to Juste first. The young man rarely seeks the attention of others, especially strangers as he would prefer to be stand-offish. This being said, he is never to busy to chat with a friend or an intrigued stranger, out of politeness or actual desire, who is to say. In public, he dons a false persona: an intelligent student of magic who is loyal to his friends. He would feign fear to confrontation and allow himself to be ignored when situations turn stressful. While his intelligence is not a lie, him being a simple student of magic could not be more false. It is not often to hear the man laugh or smile, yet he will offer expressions of happiness around those he cares for. He is also nearsighted in his right eye and often wears spectacles that fall downwards along his nose, leading him to push them upwards often. He will often be seen reading from books and practicing magic to further increase his power. Even though he plans to ruse his friends into thinking he is fine, his tell-tale expression of sorrow in his eyes are the signs of great pain in his soul is easy to spot when in the correct lighting.

Combat Art

Fighting Style

Juste is naturally gifted with the ability to manifest what is known as black magic. His passion for the arcane lead him to study schools of Thaumaturgy, Arcanima, and Healing magics after Carteneau. However, when he was captured five years later, Malphret altered his mana flow, and Juste finds himself no longer being able to conjure healing magics. The scientist would see his weapon a phantom only capable of destruction, now and forever. Juste's Aether Eye allows the young elezen to cast spells at a quick rate and would last much longer before finding himself in need of ether. In addition, the Eye amplifies his magic, causing them to be much more devastating and destructive then would seem possible at his age.

Before the Empire captured his clan, Juste's father, Guillaume, was a skilled archer and taught Juste how to also shoot an arrow in his younger years. Juste proved to be a natural. He later was forced to pick up his bow again after being brainwashed and becoming an assassin for SECT 7. He prefers to kill enemies quickly, even as he was brainwashed, as he saw the idea of a slow and painful death too cruel.

Juste was forced to train in the art of a blade for 5 years within the Garlean forces. He became a truly graceful sword-fighter for one so young. Juste was often sent to kill targets and then memory wiped, leading him to be cold and ruthless. Malphret ridding him of any remorse or sorrow, the young elezen would be unable to feel for the lives he had taken. Juste knows how to kill a man with a sword much quicker then most; the boy often casting magic with one hand while attacking with his blade in another. After the battle of Carteneau, he smashed his blade into pieces and scattered them across Mor Dhona, vowing never to pick up a sword again. He could not, however, make the same promise to the wielding of black magic.

Aliases/Nicknames

"You have no name. You have no past. You are my killer. You will paint the world in an image of my own! You are... my Phantom." ~Edis Krad Malphret "The Mad"

  • Phantom Eleven: Five years after Carteneau, Juste was approached by Garleans in disguise, ordering his return to them. When Juste attempted to kill them, they revealed they had set a trap for his new friends that he had grown close to. If he did not surrender himself, they would be killed. Juste had no choice other than to leave with them, when he was instead ambushed by a mysterious group of hooded men with curved blades. While the worked for a darker puppet master, they called themselves the Choir of Malice, or to Juste, SECT 7. Malphret had appeared as well, claiming to no longer represent the Empire after their failure at Carteneau, and sealed Juste's memories deep into his mind. After installed the young man with the new Crimson Eye, he was surprised to find that Juste was able to seal his ability to cast magic before he was captured. While Malphret sought a way to break the seal, Juste, known only by his callsign Phantom Eleven, would carry out assassinations or captures of targets known as Shard-Bearers using his latent skills with a bow and arrow.

Relationships

Family/Clan

  • Father: Guillaume Fantome, deceased
  • Mother: Diane Alexander, deceased
  • Older Brother: D'Andre Fantome, deceased
  • Best Friend: Toby-Luc Galivier, deceased
  • Love Interest: Jeanette Delacroix, deceased

Friends

  • Kelvena Agapor:A young conjurer from Gridania and Ikus's daughter. Kelvena hasn't seen her father since she was eleven, and searches for word of him now that she is strong enough to travel. She has a warm heart, yet can be naive when it comes to protecting her friends. She wishes to be strong enough to protect everyone and re-establish the Lost Rogues. Juste was able to restore her aether capacity when she cast too much from it after trying to save Artorias Mason from a fatal wound. Currently, she is dating the bard, Markus Gladeswind.
  • Garrett Slater: A quiet, stoic, and strong Paladin of Ul'dah. His father went off to fight in Mor Dhona, leaving Garrett and his mother alone. After his father died in the war, Garrett now finds a piece of himself missing. He works as a freelance blacksmith and has contracts in all three great cities. He is quite wary of Juste, especially after finding out that the man hails from the Garlean Empire, yet understood when the man gave his life to protect them. He now holds on to Juste's grimoire, where the young elezen sealed his ability to cast magic.
  • Artorias Mason: An all-knowing Dragoon with seemingly limitless power and Imperial technology to boot. He had everything, yet lost it all to Gaius von Baelsar, and now seeks vengeance. Denies the existence of the Twelve in his misfortune. Artorias has a tendency to boast his amazing abilities and often talks down to others. It's not clear if he means to or not. He trains for his inevitable confrontation with Gaius... and to the death of the both of them. Juste considers the man a good friend, and Artorias would agree, although he could not help sparring Juste after he found out that he fought against the Eorzea Alliance at Carteneau.
  • Markus Gladeswind: A bard who has fallen head over heels in love with Kelvena Agapor. While Juste and Markus did not know each other long, Markus understood how much Juste meant to Kelvena as a friend, and before Juste went to surrender himself to the Empire, the miq'ote gifted Juste with a good luck feather, in hopes that it would lead him back to them. The miq'ote is also quite the cook.
  • Augustine Frost: A sellsword who has fallen in love with Garrett Slater. While that man can be seen to be rather rude and unsympathetic, he does think fondly of those closest to him, whenever it deems convenient.
CampsiteMeeting.jpg

Notable Souls

  • Ikus Agapor: The leader of a mercenary group called the Lost Rogues. He was able to disarm Juste with a expert counter riposte. But instead of killing him, Ikus smashed the mind control device, freeing Juste from Malphret's control. The man carried the unconscious elezen back to their encampment, but not a bell later, Dalamud exploded.
  • D'Andre: An emerald carbuncle. D'Andre is the soul of Juste's older brother, whom Juste sealed into the grimoire when the Imperial scientists killed him. D'Andre fights beside Juste often trying to push back the enemy and enhance his younger brother's spells. He is quite protective of Juste and his friends, and has a gentle nature around them.
  • Toby-Luc: A topaz carbuncle. Toby-Luc contains the soul of Juste's best friend who was experimented on within the Imperial labs. He is strong-willed and rather arrogant, putting himself in the enemies face and wailing on them until they fall. Even still, Toby-Luc cares greatly for Juste and after being summoned, aided in the young elezen's escape from Imperial custody.

Enemies

  • Edis Krad Malphret: Also known as Malphret The Mad, the Garlean scientist grew obsessed with crafting the perfect weapon to ensure the defeat of the Eorzean Alliance at Carteneau. He has been experimenting on organics for the better half of twenty years before his success with a few subjects, including Juste. He is wicked and insane, a deadly combination, and has a nasty habit of surviving to plot his newest schemes every time he seems to die.
  • Uko Tredecim: A hunter from SECT 7. He has no regrets, and no emotion. He kills for nothing. In fact, he lusts for it. Since Juste's escape from SECT 7, Uko will take over, going after the Shard-Bearers. However Juste will see that Uko meets death soon.

He had even been able to find a way to craft a small ring from metal in a scrap heap and carve the word Forever around its band.
