Information Broker. Ala Mhigan. Liberator.

Lurial was only seven when the Empire devastated Ala Mhigo - sparking the beginning of a life defined by enduring hardship alone and the unflinching need to accumulate knowledge. Her parents were slain trying to defend their home and slavers captured her fraternal twin brother as she and the other refugees poured out of the region in a mad frenzy to escape. She spent much of her childhood as a street urchin, doing what she could to survive while gathering as much information as she could to find and free her twin brother.

Now as a well-known Information Broker, Lurial weaves a complicated web, using her knowledge and skills towards a greater purpose: freeing her nation from the clutches of the Garlean Empire. For without facing the past - can a woman truly be free?

Character

Appearance

Eyes
Hair Skin Body Type Voice Clothing Notable Features
Azure Silvery white Bronzed - especially from time in the Thanalan Sun Lithe and lean - more of a runner's body then a brawler's Soft and clear Long, sweeping robes, with a few decorative ornaments worked into the fabric for flair. A thick book filled with spells, information, and various other notes is strapped to one hip, while a medium-sized leather satchel hangs from the other. A single, elaborate, Ascian-style brand on the back of her right shoulder.

Standing at 5 fulms 4 ilms with a smooth bronzed complexion and eyes like bright aquamarines, Lurial carries herself with defined grace and a sense of purpose. Her hair is a soft white, cleanly cut to stay out of her eyes and face.

Though she may appear fragile and delicate at a glance, beneath the robes that conceal much of her frame is a fit, lean, reasonably toned body accustomed to the rigors of constant travel and life working between the light and darkness that make up the city of Ul'dah. She prefers long, sweeping garments that both shield her body from the sun and enable her to hide away various objects and trinkets inside of it. Occasionally there are potions or crystals bound to her waist - though what purpose they serve, only Lurial would know.

Unlike her brother, Lurial exhibits no aggression or ferocity in her posture, appearing (at least outwardly) relaxed, amicable, and open.

Behavior and Personality

Unlike her brother, Lurial carries herself in a polite and friendly manner, presenting herself as an open, amicable, and easily approachable person. She always strives to tell the truth when asked ( as her occupation relies heavily on any information she provides being true ), and will generally only lie when it is absolutely necessary to save a life or keep someone out of harm's way. She jokes and lightly teases others, quick to smile and easy to laugh.

Behind closed doors however - Lurial is a woman wracked by the duality of her emotions. On one side, she feels an overwhelming remorse for the lives she destroyed over the course of her career, providing untold amounts of knowledge to criminals in exchange for expanding her influence and resources in the Ul'dahn Underground. On the other - all of that power and influence led to the liberation of her brother. Not only that, but there is a significant part of the miqo'te that enjoys her work and the influence it grants her far more then she would like to admit.

In some ways, she is more like her brother then she realises - keeping her true thoughts and emotions close to the vest while watching closely for the behavior of others. Lurial tends to live a very solitary lifestyle due to her occupation, and though she outwardly acts as though she's come to terms with it, inwardly she craves camaraderie and friendship just like anyone else.

Lurial has a soft spot for younglings and is occasionally seen giving out food and clothing to Ul'dahn street orphans.

Combat

Lurial prefers resolving conflicts peacefully if possible, and typically avoids combat. If it cannot be helped, it is often said that her best 'weapon' is 'secrets'. Whatever weakness she knows about her enemy - a blind spot, a previously broken arm, a damaged kidney - she will use to the fullest extent.

Lurial prefers long-range combat, circling her enemy and whittling them down with countless spells while she tests their strengths and weaknesses. Once she learns of weak-point, she blasts that area with a more powerful array of magic and relies on speed to keep her out of harm's way when her enemies draw close.

While her experience with the arcane can help her ward off the magic of others, and stray arrows from their path - Lurial has great difficulty battling someone who can easily close the gap. This is especially true if her opponent is physically powerful and can cut her down in only a few strikes.

Lurial also knows basic hand-to-hand combat due to learning the fundamentals of self-defense as a teenager from an old roegadyn. She continues practicing to keep in shape, but does not typically use fist-weapons in combat and would easily be bested by a master of the art.

Occupation, Skills, and Pastimes

Lurial is a well-known information broker working in Ul'dah. She has an office not far from the Ul'dahn markets and can usually only be seen by appointment. Her 'secretary' is a massive onyx-skinned roegadyn that goes by the name "Furious Storm", who will physically remove individuals who do not have an appointment from the premises.

Her 'seal' is a circular symbol with a sun on one half and the moon on the other - presumably an allusion to her mixed heritage.

Relationships

Family

Lurial was born into a life of poverty. However, most of his memories of that time were happy ones due to his parents shielding their children from the insanity and chaos caused by Ala Mhigo's King of Ruin.

Father: V'Rahn Nunh (deceased) - Seeker of the Sun - Formerly a Tia that had grown tired with his life in his tribe. He left to forge a path of his own and ended up in Ala Mhigo where he met his mate, Siha. He took on the last name 'Nunh' after his children were born as a cheeky way of showing he now had a 'tribe'.

Mother: Siha Ashir (deceased) - Keeper of the Moon - Similarly to V'Rahn, Siha had left her tribe to experience the world outside of the usual traditions of her tribe and ended up in Ala Mhigo where she met and settled with her mate. They were both slain attempting to protect their children in the midst of the rebellion and the Garlean advance on Ala Mhigo.

Twin Brother: Tiergan Vashir - Both Lurial and Tiergan were given more Hyur-sounding names to help them fit in more easily amongst the mostly Highlander population. Their last name is a combination of Siha's family name and Rahn's tribe.

Aunt: V'ira Tarja (deceased) - Seeker of the Sun - V'Rahn's sister. She left their tribe along side him, eager to experience the world outside of its confines. She traveled with him to Ala Mhigo.

Uncle: C'aseen the Poet (deceased) - Seeker of the Sun

Cousin: Vailyx the Swifttail (MIA) - Seeker of the Sun - As children, Vailyx, Tiergan, and Lurial were a cheerful, rambunctious trio that were constantly playing together and occasionally getting into all manner of trouble whenever Vailyx came up with a clever plan. As he was the oldest of the group, Vailyx often was protective of his younger siblings. Young Lurial looked to Vailyx as the leader of their group, (secretly viewing herself as second-in-command) and valued his insights as the eldest of their party. She occasionally the voice of reason that helped the trio get out of trouble.

Cousin: Caen Jabari - A sprightly, acrobatic youth without any memory of his past. Lurial was initially unaware of Caen's existence as the youth was born long after the Fall of Ala Mhigo. She first learned of his existence when she found records of V'ira and her family in Limsa Lominsa. When the Calamity hit however, all evidence seemed to point to the V'ira, C'aseen, Vailyx, and Caen's demise. She gave up her search for them until she heard word of a young miqo'te amnesiac named Caen and sought him out to confirm for herself whether her young cousin was still alive. Caen now lives with her in her home in Ul'dah. Lurial is determined to care for the boy and provide him the family he'd been without for five long years.

Player Character Relationships

Romantic Interest     Sexual Desire     Platonic Love      Good Standing     Neutral Standing     Poor Standing    ! Recent Standing Change

Positive Standing

Melchar Asbrand : Mentor, protector, and friend, Melchar was one of the most important figures in Lurial's childhood. Protecting Lurial from assault when she was a shy, easily-frightened youngster slowly growing her reputation as a source of information, Melchar taught the child the basics of self-defense and was a kind, patient source of wisdom and advice. By the time the old roegadyn had to leave her side to continue his journey, young Lurial had become brave and confident enough to try learning the aetheric arts, applying what she'd learned from Melchar towards growing and honing arcane power. Now that the old warrior has returned, Lurial continues to see him as a mentor and values his word highly above all others. Furious Storm : Secretary/Bodyguard - Lurial first encountered Furious Storm five years ago when the roegadyn challenged a massive group of bandits outside of Camp Drybone and had his tongue cut out to teach him and any one else eager to play hero a lesson. Lurial tended to Fury's injuries and assisted him in wiping out the bandits. Afterwards, he swore to be her guard and has worked with her ever since - often carrying around a small notepad and a stick of charcoal to communicate with others.
Gabriel Vremaix : Bodyguard - It is unclear exactly how Lurial met this towering, mysterious elezen or secured his contract. What is known however, is that he is often trailing after her like a second shadow - defending her from all enemies and threats that may befall her. If she is alone for whatever reason, it is likely because she firmly requested to be left to her own devices. Striding Oak : A powerful female roegadyn Lurial knows only through her twin brother. She is friendly and cordial towards the woman due to her friendship with Tiergan (though she secretly performed a background check on Oak shortly after Tiergan spoke of her.)
Brynhilde Wulf : It's uncertain how the two initially met. However, because the highlander woman appears to be good friends with Striding Oak and has provided warnings of danger in the past, Lurial treats the woman with respect and civility. She keeps an eye on the highlander however, noticing Brynhilde's growing animosity and mistrust for Lurial and her twin.

Negative Standing

Varus Adelric Rosenthal : For a brief moment in time, the two mages could loosely be considered allies. However, after hearing of how the magus essentially tortured her brother during their first meeting - Lurial used her contacts to learn more about Varus and threatened to destroy his research should he ever bring harm to her brother again. This caused a massive surge of animosity to build up between them, with Varus determined to kill Lurial and the female miqo'te working to devise methods to hold him at bay while also protecting her twin brother from attack. She is aware that the man is willing to send agents to spy upon her and has become considerably more cautious of unfamiliar faces as a result. Nadeau Celeste : Lurial initially regarded the leader of the Traveling Templar with a measure of respect, going to great lengths to try and protect the woman from what Lurial deemed to be Varus' corrupting influence. In the end however, it became all too clear that Nadeau did not wish to be saved - devoting herself to Varus' cause and becoming his apprentice. Lurial has not spoken with Nadeau since, finding it too much of a risk to trade words with the apprentice of her enemy - but keeps hold of the Templar Pearl she was given long ago as a way of monitoring Nadeau and her allies.

Rumors

Common Rumors

  • When she was a teenager, a towering roegadyn named Melchar Asbrand protected her from assailants and taught her basic self defense.
  • She once had a hyur lover who fought as a gladiator, but he died shortly before the Calamity.

Moderate Rumors

  • She sometimes gives out special currency: A coin with a silver moon on one side and a gleaming gold sun on the other. If you give her one of those coins, she'll answer one question you have for free regardless of what it is. People have been known to sell, trade, or simply keep the coin for themselves.

Rare Rumors

  • She has ties to dark figures within the Ul'dahn underground. Ties she likely would rather not have.
  • She has quite the complicated network! And sometimes members of the Ala Mhigan Resistance benefit from it.

History

Lurial was only seven when the Empire devastated Ala Mhigo. Her parents were slain trying to defend their home and slavers captured her fraternal twin brother as she and the other refugees poured out of the region in a mad frenzy to escape. When Gridania refused the Ala Mhigan refugees asylum, she and the others were forced to travel to Ul'dah. There she became one of many orphaned street urchins, stealing and begging for enough to survive from one day to the next. Knowing her brother was still alive somewhere out in the world and that many slaves were often sold in Ul'dah's black markets, the young mi'qote spent a great deal of time gathering as much information as she could, hoping one day it would lead her to her the only family she had left.

And find him she did - many years later.

They were both teenagers by the time Lurial had collected enough information to track down her brother, and she'd found Tiergan as a heavily-scarred gladiator-slave to one of the most powerful and mysterious criminal lords of the Ul'dahn Underground. Through Lurial's resourcefulness and ingenuity, the twins found ways to meet and stay in contact, their strong sibling bond becoming unbreakable over time as they took solace in the fact the other had survived. They were no longer alone.

As Lurial grew into adulthood, her endless thirst for knowledge led to her becoming a well-known information broker within the city. She expanded her influence, harvesting secrets, trading away knowledge for both good and for ill, subtly working behind the scenes to shape the chaotic world of Ul'dah's dark underground into a network of pathways that she knew intimately like a lover. By maintaining complete neutrality in regards to her work, Lurial's reputation and influence expanded rapidly. At the time, it did not matter to her who was harmed in the process. Countless men and women were attacked and killed through the information she often provided - and she felt no remorse. All that mattered was finding a way to free her brother, gaining the right contacts, befriending the right people, arranging the perfect set-up needed to not only set Tiergan free, but ensure that neither she or her sibling would be caught in the process. Her methods could not be traced back to her - Omen was far too powerful and frightening an individual. She could not afford to make him an enemy. Everything had to be subtle, covert - perfect.

Shortly after the twins' 23rd birthday, Lurial's plans came to fruition. A chain-reaction of events caused riots to break out amongst Omen's slaves just as a one of the walls to the pens exploded. Omen's men were 'curiously' short-staffed that day, and there were not enough guards to pursue Tiergan and the countless other slaves that poured through the opening in the wall to their freedom. The few that were there were too sluggish from a long night of partying to properly chase their quarry - and by the time a proper team was assembled, Tiergan had vanished deep into the city.

The goal that Lurial had been chasing for nearly all of her life had finally been accomplished.

Present

With her brother liberated and the ultimate goal of her life achieved, Lurial has subtly shifted gears towards a greater purpose. She still carefully maintains an air of perfect neutrality, but it is an illusion crafted to conceal all her efforts aiding supporters of the poor, the weak, the innocent, and the Ala Mhigan Resistance. She weaves a new web - one born not to navigate the shadowy chaos of the Ul'dahn Underground, but to help ensure that food, supplies, reinforcements, and gil arrive to the right people at the right time ... but without any way to trace it all back to her.

I completely and shamelessly ripped off of the page of Brynhilde Wulf after asking her for permission first. Because DAYUM - it was awesome looking.
