Maya Kazumi is a driven young doctor and researcher hailing from Limsa Lominsa. Thanks to years of intense, dedicated research and study originating in her childhood, she is a far better Arcanist - and doctor - than her relatively young age would suggest.

Maya is an exceptionally lean woman, almost nothing but bone and wiry sinew. She teeters dangerously close to being outright gaunt. Her face is generally sharp, which is only compounded by the way her vibrant hair frames it. One of her eyes is a slightly lighter shade of green than the other, and the highlights in her hair are halfway between both shades. At the roots, her original hair colour - a dark brunette - can be seen. Her movements are energetic, yet sporadic, as if she were a Yarzon given spoken form. There are bags underneath her eyes, the dark circles worryingly large.
Maya Kazumi is a Miqo'te Keeper of the moon with a deep-seated interest in history, battle tactics, Aetherial manipulation, and the ocean. (Especially the ocean.) She spends the majority of her time in her home of Limsa Lominsa, but is known to travel to Ul'dah and Gridania on occasion for 'Scholarly pursuits'. She is easily manipulated, and willingly so, but if she manages to catch wind that she's seen as 'Annoying', 'Expendable', or worst of all, 'Naive', she tends to leave her would-be manipulators.

Born on the docks of Limsa Lominsa, Maya's childhood was simple. With her two best friends, she formed a trio of troublemakers, although Maya herself was the most rule-abiding. At the age of thirteen, one of her friends gave her a nameday gift of a book they'd stolen from an adult - an Arcanist's grimoire. Maya was enthralled, studying and attempting to understand the patterns and words within. This started a lifelong passion for Arcanima, which she would put to good use only a few years later.

When the Calamity struck, Maya was inside of a building with her friends.Unfortunately, walls were no protection from the wrath of Bahamut, and the building was struck, catching fire. Everyone tried to scramble for exit, but in the end, Maya was the only one able to escape before the ceiling collapsed. Her friends dead, and haunted by the memories of their last moments, Maya found solace the only ways she could think to - studying medicine, so no one had to share their fate; delving into her arcanima even more to quiet and focus her mind; joining a crew of Lominsan "privateers" for a time, to get revenge on the Garleans she blamed for the Calamity.
Maya does not care greatly for physical appearances (Or so she would have you believe), which manifests in her hair, kept short and tied. She has, however, dyed it purple and green so 'That I'll be seen in a crowd'. Her face looks youthful with her glasses off, and she dislikes removing her glasses for this very reason. She has a very poorly healed scar on her cheek, which opens anew so often she's taken to always wearing a bandage over it. She also has bags under her eyes from a lack of sleep, and she looks slender to the point of malnourishment (Which is not entirely false, as she often forgets to eat whilst researching). She is, in other words, unhealthy and faint.

However, like most, Maya has positive qualities as well - She's honest, straightforward and surprisingly altruistic - she sees nothing strange about insulting someone constantly the one minute, and then giving them medical treatment for free the next. She tends to view the world in black and white, which can serve her for good or for ill.

As a result of spending the majority of time reading, Maya is unsure of herself in social situations. She's easily sidetracked by anything she considers 'Interesting' (Such as abandoning polite small talk to obsess over a Thaumaturges' control of their own Aether). Even when not distracted by something, Maya can easily say things that other people might consider offensive (Such as asking a Gridanian if the Elementals 'Want to control every part of their life, or just the 'Important' bits'). If someone points out how bad something she said sounded, she tends to fluster and 'Try to dig herself out of a hole'. She also enjoys appearing bizarre to the people around her. This can make it hard for her to get along with people that aren't very patient.
 
 
She is, however, a lonely person. If she notices someone is willing to put up with her or even actually enjoys talking to her, she tends to try and 'Latch onto them'. This, unfortunately, means it's very easy to convince her to partake in less than savoury activities, enticed by the kindness of criminals. She draws the line, however, at anything that would kill innocent people (Although she can be persuaded to HURT them, if led to believe 'It's for their own good').
 
 
Maya is also surprisingly talented at lying, if she feels what she's saying will make other people around her view her in a more favourable light. Unfortunately for her, this skill does not extend to her interest, and so it is easy to tell when she's only pretending based on the passion of her questions. She's at her most natural lying when attempting to play down things that actually depress her greatly, and the worst she's willing to say in regards to her emotions or situation is 'No, I'm fine.' This has an unintended side effect in that when finally pushed over the edge, Maya attempts to destroy whatever broke the Chocobo's back with a grim, steely determination usually described as 'Disturbing'.
 
 
==Combat==
 
Maya has a 'Talent' for casually wandering into dangerous areas. As such, she's developed a combat style, although she has no experience with weapons. Maya is a very defensive Arcanist, who has learned to create a barrier she likes to call an 'Aegis' using Aether. She also has a passing knowledge of debilitating curses, which she won't hesitate to use if she thinks the situation warrants them. Furthermore, she has learned to create manifestations of her personal Aether in the form of 'Faeries', with whom she works to keep her allies alive and her foes incapacitated.
 
 
Maya's ability to create an Aegis quickly and effectively makes her a great boon for people who are likely to get hit, such as front-line warriors. Although they do not last forever, their ability to mitigate damage is still great, and can make the difference between life and death. Her curses, while not nearly as strong, can still weaken the enemy to a notable extent, as well. Her faeries, simply called 'Them', 'Her' or 'The Fey' by Maya, also assist her in healing by acting as a 'Focus' for her to channel Aether. This allows her to strengthen health, resilience, and the healing magic of her allies.
 
 
Sadly, Maya is easily laid low if attacked directly. She tends to panic if she believes she's the direct target of someone's aggression, and run towards her allies for help... Regardless of what the circumstances are like where they are. She is also, like in conversation, easily distracted. She can be so busy watching her own wounds and the wounds of others that she forgets to try and avoid potentially deadly attacks.
 
 
As a manifestation of her Aether, her faeries are also (At least in a sense) a part of her, and so one eligible tactic for overpowering her is to attack them. She feels their pain, and if they are outright destroyed she loses a major aetherial connection until she summons them again, typically causing her to both panic and struggle against the pain. If her faeries are destroyed multiple times over a short period of time, Maya can be driven to outright fainting.

Ironically, despite her love of history, Maya can be somewhat taciturn when it comes to her own. The only specific details she's willing to say, most of the time, are that she was raised in Limsa Lominsa and was a very studious child, hard to pull into a conversation without the use of debate. She also, if pressed on the topic, (Reluctantly) states that she studied many topics, mostly focusing on the Aether and it's use, before settling on ancient maritime warfare 'when I was very young'.
