General Information

Samilen Jawantal is a well-known botanist and carpenter within the city-state of Gridania where which he resides. He was a soldier present in battle during the Great Calamity as an Order of the Twin Adder's White Wolves member (bard), and carries many ongoing emotional issues from the conflict to the present day. Due to the trauma experienced from that day, Samilen is selectively mute and communicates largely through the use of sign language and the writing on a journal he carries with him.

Appearance

Samilen Jawantal is a male keeper of the moon miqo'te baring a general resemblance to others of his people and clan with a dark blue-gray complexion and bright yellow eyes. He stands at approximately 5 fulms, 6 ilms (5 fulms 8 ilms including ears) and is relatively slim in shape but muscular in build due to years of archery honing his upper-body strength.

He has short, fluffy white hair and slim cat-like ears often adorned with some manner of jewelry. He can often be found wearing clothes that least restrict his movement, particularly of his arms.

Mannerisms

Samilen is a very exuberant man with a lot of energy that he rarely is ever able to run dry. The worst thing in the world to him is boredom, and boredom comes when he is left with nothing to do–he relishes the opportunity to fiddle with trinkets and explore new areas, which is why he takes to carpentry and botany as well as he does.

Though he is generally very friendly, Samilen has grown very introverted in the days since the Great Calamity. He often doesn’t instigate the meeting of new people but will never turn down a conversation or brief companionship. Moreso, though he is still a brilliant archer Samilen rarely takes part in any battle or skirmish unless he is absolutely needed or if a loved one is in danger.

Despite his tendency for self-isolation, Samilen is also a man looking for companionship, though he often hides his vulnerable need for intimacy as a character trait–it’s much easier for him to play it off as simply being a charmer, after all, and often finds himself thirsting after anyone who fits the profile of being strong, self-assured and assertive in some shape.

Philosophy & Ideals

Samilen's philosophy on life can be summed up into 'give into the world what you want to get back'. He believes very much in the aspect of karma and often holds this close to his heart as something taught to him by his mothers early in life. He sees the world much like a seed: if one wants to harvest the fruits, they must first nurture the plant to bloom and be patient as it grows. This might be a reason why he enjoys the study of botany as much as he does, as it's easy to see this philosophy at work, but also because he wants to make and see the world become a better place, especially after everything he's experienced due to the Great Calamity.

Early Life

Childhood

Samilen Jawantal was born to a small family in Limsa Lominsa and is the eldest child of three. He has two younger sisters, Xazi (15) and Gici (7), and all three were born to father Nobu'li (Miqo'te) and mothers Sami (Miqo'te) and Lenphi (Hyur).

Sami and Lenphi were born, grew in and married within the city-state of Gridania, but later moved to Limsa Lominsa in search of prosperous jobs, as both of them were skilled carpenters and Limsa was then with a sore need for their skills in the growing demand for ships.

The two of them met Nobu'li, a local fisherman and well-known womanizer at the time. Over the course of several years he managed to win the hearts of both Sami and Lenphi–or at least, that’s in his own recounts of the history. Many others would remember that he was no more a bumbling mess to the two women who, eventually, found him a part of their relationship.

Several months after the three of them married officially, their first son was born: Samilen. He was named after both of his mothers as part of Sami’s values and quickly proved himself to be quite the handful. Until he was a young teenager, Samilen got into trouble very often around the docks of Limsa: stealing fish, playing pranks, getting into fights with other kids. There seemed to be no end to the chaos he could get himself into (many likened to say that he took after his father, Nobu'li).

Adolescence

Several years after Xazi was born, Samilen found his calling in archery and botany, two skill sets that were not at all common in Limsa nor its surrounding areas.

Though his parents had reservations about allowing Samilen to take up a skill that may lead him into the growing skirmishes against the Garlean Empire, as many other parents were for their not-yet-adult children, they allowed him to move back to Gridania to learn archery and botany while under the care of extended family.

He took to both skills very quickly and soon became well-known across others of his age for his quickness, dexterity and extraordinary aim with a bow, and also his curiosity and enthusiasm in learning the art of not only botany, but carpentry as well.

Samilen brought respect and pride to his mothers and father and on the eve of his 18th nameday, he joined the ranks of Order of the Twin Adder so he could use his skills to protect the citizens of Gridania and even Eorzea as a whole.

When the Great Calamity happened, Samilen was one of thousands of soldiers on the battlefield against the Garlean Empire. He is also one of many thousands who saw the world burn before him, with the memories of fire, death and destruction seared forever into his memories and nightmares, never to be forgotten.

Recent Times

Five years after the Great Calamity, Samilen is still overcoming much of the trauma he among other soldiers endured. Since that day he has been mute, refusing to speak and communicating only in sign language and otherwise not traveling very far from Gridania (even to visit his family).

Despite being a member of the Order of the Twin Adders, Samilen is rarely called for combat of any sort. Due to his skills however, he often serves to mentor new archers in the Twin Adders, but he otherwise serves as a connection to the various crafting guilds within Gridania and has supplied many weapons to them of his own make.

He refuses vehemently to go to into active battle again and, as a survivor of the Great Calamity battle, many respect that (especially as his skills can still be used elsewhere).

He can often be found within the carpentry guild filling orders or traveling within the Black Shroud on various tasks given to him by the botany guildmaster Fufucha.
