Style
Confident, flirtacious. Right. An old scar on the right side of his jaw. White tattoo across left eye, shaped like an ornate lightning bolt design. Flamboyant in cool colors, thick navy coats and silver ornaments.
Hair & Eyes
Under a curtain of long black hair, silver eyes of usually crinkled or leering eyes peek out, like drops of mithril set in his skull. In certain lights, some can swear that the pair of near-white irises glow (an illusion, no doubt). Jack, in all his vanity, has naturally curly hair he keeps in check with a spell to straighten it; the magic is undone by sea water, however. Woven into the locks are typically beads and bits of metal, wrapped in a piece of fabric and left to drip over his shoulders. If not, it’s placed in a messy bun.
Physique & Markings
The Duskwight appears typical of his race: deep grey skin, lanky of long limbs, and sharp in features. Yet the sea has hardened a lord’s son into a sharp knife; the beating sun has blistered his skin, the years of working with wood and rope roughened his hands to thick callouses, and the spray of salt seems to be embedded into his very skin and hair. Cords of muscle move under the Duskwight’s skin and rough spun cotton shirts, with strength to haul up sails and move cargo. Beyond the myriad of white scars on his hide, Jacques has no other markings save a tattoo over his left eye--one small design under the eye has been hidden by an overlapping design of an ornate lightning bolt design.
Hygiene & Attire
Jacques usually washes after coming into every port he sets his boots on from his ship, so on land he is clean but at sea he doesn’t bother as frequently. He typically smells strongly of salt and the sea; the soap he uses smells of bergamot and oranges. As for his clothes, he’s typically seen in navy wool coats with an opened cotton shirt, brightly colored sashes adorning his waist and sometimes in his hair. On land, he can be more flamboyant; if it’s not a piece of garb from Kugane, it’s ornate coats and jerkins of fine material, flaunting his wealth as a ‘trader’ as he comes to port for business (or pleasure).
Personality
Psychological Profile
Jacques is friendly, chatty, and a flirt–this is what near anyone can say of him when they first meet him, never knowing his more terrible traits. While Jacques Lafitte is indeed a charismatic and humorous fellow, in usual high spirits when he appears in port towns and taverns as merely an honest trader and sellsword, those who get close to him quickly find him to be a mercurial man. He is, for example, quick to black tempers and fits of rage, unsatisfied until he brings vengeance down on any man who gives him even the smallest of slights. He is also ambitious and competitive, a salacious individual hellbent on grasping at the desires of the world and basking in them without qualm or care for what gets in his way. He kills with little remorse as a sellsword, his only hesitance being he cannot harm children; he fights to cause suffering to the victim he corners, enjoying the pain he causes with every hack of his axe or pierce of his arrows or blades--But, right, he’s just a friendly, chatty flirt to those he keeps a casual acquaintance with. Infamous for little more than playing a fiddle well, knowing a few bawdy sea shanties, and dreamily talking of the sea.
Voice
Jack’s deep voice croons with a near musical lilt when he is pleased. It is rough, laced with years of drink and years of harsh living on a ship, yet it bleeds a self assurance that leaves no doubt that the owner of it sits comfortably in his own opinion of himself. Quick to a laugh or a joking quip, one can be understandably taken aback at the rare times it seethes in growls and tears through the Duskwight’s throat in fits of rage. Few ever hear it--except his crew, who are used to their captain’s ire appearing after years of service.
Philosophy & Mannerisms
Jack is impatient with fate, and it shows in how he conducts himself in business. He cuts straight to the point typically, heavy as a hammer with his hand and striking ruthlessly when he’s sure he has a firm grip at the other’s throat. With acquaintances and the few who would call him ‘friend’, he delights in conversation and colorful quips, dragging lie after lie free from his lips like a magician’s string of kerchiefs to delight and enchant. He should never be trusted to speak the truth, for he rarely does--his dramatic gestures and cheerful laugh are merely a farce to further a game he plays, batting a person about in his hands for his own gleeful amusement. To become his actual friend is difficult, for you will never know you are until the man actually sacrifices a selfish decision for your own betterment. When it comes to actual friends and loved ones, Jacques’ ruthlessness because overbearing protectiveness for his ‘treasures’; he will invade your life and either drag you into a more terrible predicament in his heavyhanded attempts to 'help' you, or sacrifice himself to bring you a better hand from fate.

History
Going Back

Born of Ishgard to a loving father and a distant mother, Jacques of House Mortier grew up as a lord’s son with two twin sisters in Ishgard, relatively happy up until his father’s demise at the hands of a heretic’s blade when he was eight years of age. From that point on, his mother was head of the family’s finances, and she quickly spoiled them in drink and the flaunting of men as a ‘wealthy widow’ who was quickly declining in wealth. When all but the house was gone, she abandoned her children and disappeared; at twelve years of age, Odette and Bernadette were given to the kindness of relations, and Jacques was ejected from Ishgard by their greed. He was smuggled on a cart headed to the Shroud, leaving with the promise to his sisters and half-siblings that he'd return with bags of riches and would reclaim their house and estate for them.

In the Black Shroud, Jacques found little way of making a life for himself beyond working as a stable hand in Bentbranch, until a kindly Lalafellan magister took him in and soon adopted him as her 'grandson' along with her already adopted Roegadyn charge, Mahk Wardblade. Mahk and Jacques soon became as close as brothers, with Mahk adopting Jacques colorful dreams and ambitions for finding his fortune where others could find it–-on the high seas, as wealthy privateers. As soon as they were able at the cusp of young adulthood, the two men bid farewell to their caregiver and left for La Noscea, to chase their ambition. For a few years they worked candidly together, getting matching face tattoos to signify their connection as brothers as they went from crew to crew together.

It took but one pivotal trip to Kugane, however, to bring their entwined fates torn apart. In the middle of the journey, a pirate ship chased the trader's vessel across the sea, forcing her into a mist that was so thick one could near cut a hole through it. The mist covered rocks that jutted from the swirling waves like teeth, which tore at the hull. As the pirate and trader ship fought, the ships were battered so by rock that when the trading vessel managed to break free of the pirates, it fled to safer waters. Jacques was torn from Mahk and brought on to the pirate vessel, never to be seen by Mahk again. Jacques and the pirates did not last long in those terrible, mist-covered seas--soon, the hull was torn asunder, and the men aboard were dragged beneath the water, to drown.

When Jacques fell in the icy depths, losing the last bit of air in his lungs, he was sure he was drowned and dead. Yet he regained consciousness in the midst of the men who had dragged him aboard--tied up and shivering in a eerie cavern with sterner members of the misbegotten crew, peering with them at the strange fish-like beast men they had never set eyes on before...

The rest of the tale is lost, left to the man who reappeared years later standing tall, carrying the name of Jacques Lafitte, Captain of the Grey Lady. 'The Undying', the Banshee in the Mists who lures ships into a watery grave in the same uncharted waters he near drowned in, five years ago.

RP Limits
I like to consider myself a flexible player who is willing to commit to a number of different types of scenes and role-play scenarios, but even I have my limits. If something is on the play list, assume it means yes, as long as it's within the context of the current play or ongoing plot. No's are typically a hard no, and it means don't ask.

RP Hooks
While the below is by no means comprehensive, it's a kind of spring board for walk-up RP. Longer plots that are meant to run for more than a few quick RP's, please feel free to send me a tell so we can work out a good reason for our characters to get to know one another. I'm always looking for RP, unless I'm actively spamming PvE content.

Player Note
There is a lot of information on this character wiki, but it is by no means completely comprehensive. There are chunks of backstory that are left intentionally vague so that details can be later added as developed through creative writing or in role-play revelation. Feel free to use Common or Uncommon rumors freely, if you want to use a Rare Rumor as a plot hook or to spark RP, I would ask that you send me a tell first, to make certain it's alright.

Tropes & Explanations
A trope is a convention or device that is often found in creative works. In this case, the tropes below describe my character either in part, or as a whole. Their background, personality, appearance, etc, most of them can be described in the tropes below.
Trope Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés.
