Ask Kasrjin Khadai to describe himself, and the most flattering word he would come up with is "functional". A somewhat lithe and lanky body reveals dense and well-toned muscles suited to a warrior, held forward by a rigid militant posture. Smoky grey-violet skin is patterned with smooth obsidian scales indicative of his species.

Elaborate but subtle face paint adorns emerald-coloured eyes that shimmer and flicker even in darkness, complemented by streaks of forest-green chaotically colouring a pool of inky black hair. His face is shaped with stiff severity: an angular jawline contours to a sharp chin with adamant cheekbones and eyebrows presenting a perpetually stoic face. Sharp horizontal horns adorn the sides of his head.

Kasrjin's first encounter with the paladin Roen Deneith was not a friendly one; she had mistaken him for a Dravanian that had attacked her mercenary compatriots in cold blood. Over time their relationship has mollified to one of cordiality, though it is not lacking in hints of true trust and reliance.

T S E N K H E R I I N

The Tsenkheriin are less of an individual tribe and more of a conglomeration of tribes that adhere to a similar social structure. Members of the Tsenkheriin travel in groups called korums. While each korum follows a consistent system of hierarchy, governance, and succession, the individual traditions, beliefs, and cultural attitudes vary from korum to korum.

The Tsenkheriin korums adhere to a rigid caste system wherein individuals are placed based on their gender, skills, and inclination. Caste mobility is possible but rare and only applied in egregious cases such as crippling injures, outstanding natural ability in a certain field, or a significant shift in motivation and interest. An individual's caste is denoted by their surname.

Each caste is gender restricted, with a few exceptions.

C A S T E S

Mahalai. Male only. Laborers, builders, porters, miners, woodsmen. Mahalai are responsible for most of the tasks that require repetitive and simple physical labor, in addition to some resource harvesting. Mahalai are identified by their faces marked with orange face paint.
Khadai. Male only. Warriors, soldiers, monster hunters. Khadai defend the other castes from all explicitly hostile threats. Khadai are identified by the presence of black face paint and martial equipment such as pikes, battle-axes, and shields.
Jungsai. Male only. Hunters, fishermen, herdsmen. Jungsai are responsible for interacting with animals of all shapes and sizes, such as hunting wild game for food or sport, taming and caring for working animals, and guiding and protecting domesticated herds. Jungsai are identified by the presence of animal ornaments fashioned from bones, teeth, etc.
Nayantai. Predominantly male; mixed gender. Scouts, trackers, couriers, and cartographers. Nayantai are expected to be the eyes and ears of their korum. They identify threats for the Khadai, hunting grounds for the Jungsai, and building sites for the Mahalai. Nayantai are identified by characteristic barbed short-bows. As natural wanderers and explorers, each individual Nayantai tends to carry their own set of ornaments unique to the individual.
Erdegai. Predominantly female; mixed gender. Artisans, crafters, smiths, architects. The Erdegai are responsible for the production of refined products such as tools, weapons, armour, and processed goods. Erdegai are also capable of designing structures that are to be built by Mahalai as needed. Male Erdegai are rare and typically take the more physically intensive crafts such as smithing or stonemasonry, though these crafts are easily filled by females as well. Erdegai are identified by the unique personal toolset that each artisan carries.
Yerenai. Female only. Cooks, healers, gatherers, foragers, raising and protection of children, community representatives. Yerenai are domestic caretakers and are thus intimately familiar with all members of their korum. Yerenai are the only female Tsenkheriin trained in combat in the event that there are no Khadai available to defend the korum. Yerenai are identified by the presence of scented or decorative herbs or plants, and occasionally rare stones or turquoise jewelry.
Aljai. Female only. Planners, administrators, leaders, traders, diplomats, judges. Aljai are responsible for the logistics and daily operations of a korum. Aljai assign daily duties, resolve small-scale disputes between individuals, measure, keep track, and manage their korum's personnel and resources. A korum is nominally lead by a group of Aljai who work for the good of the korum. Aljai are identified by the presence of obsidian ornaments which often double as writing utensils for inscribing notes into clay or coal.
Tsenkhai. Mixed gender. Tsenkhai predominantly serve as teachers and organizers who plan which caste an individual will enter. They may also resolve disputes between korums, and on rare occasion may direct all korums of the Tsenkheriin towards a singular objective, and serve as historians and keepers of knowledge and lore. Tsenkhai are primarily chosen by their natural ability to manipulate a form of aether referred to as the "Correspondence", and experienced Tsenkhai are capable of casting primitive spells.
