Merrick Lockwood --- About
Merrick’s body is lean and hard from his years spent struggling in the resistance, but he remains oddly as he was when he joined—his age seems somewhat ambiguous on sight, simply “relatively young”. Scars & Markings: Small pinprick sized scars on the inside of his elbows. Voice: Smooth, melodic low tenor, with an accent you can’t quite put your finger on. Clothing: Practicality first, cuts and color combinations that serve to break up the outline of the body in the Gyr Abanian countryside. When he's not out there fighting for his life, he dresses contextually; either for comfort or to show himself off. He always wears a glove or gauntlet on his left hand/arm, and does not appear to carry the obvious focus most red mages employ.
Sociable, friendly, and flirtatious on the surface--Irritable, sarcastic, and sharp-tongued beneath.
Family: Ian Lockwood left Sharlayan as signs of political unrest began in Ala Mhigo, in search of as much historical information about Red Magic as he could find, in order to preserve it. Luck would have it that he encountered a clan of red mages, passing down their particular brand of magic through generations. As his interest was purely academic, and for sake of preservation, the family patriarch entertained his inquiries. With an eye towards the same goal he encouraged the budding romance between Ian and his eldest child and heir, Aedwen, so that no matter what came next the family would survive. The two left for Sharlayan with his blessing, and settled in the colony where they had two sons, Coren and Merrick. Early Life & Education: Coren was born first, and was first in all things--except the most crucial. He had little skill with magic, his aether reserves not quite up to snuff for the rigorous abuse red magic demanded. Merrick, on the other hand, showed aptitude practically from the cradle, and his parents often joked he could cast before he could walk. The family had a comfortable, idyllic life in the colony, both boys pursuing the best educations they could by day, and by evening training in the way of their mother's family, albeit mostly with the sword for Coren. When the news came that they were to abandon the colony, the family hesitated, and for their reluctance were forced to make a hard choice. Aedwen and Coren left for the Eorzean city-states, while Ian agreed to divorce his wife in an attempt to prove that he and his son would not be a flight risk from Sharlayan proper, so Merrick could finish his education. While Aedwen and Coren got to work helping the growing tide of Ala Mhigan refugees, Merrick doubled down on his studies. Instructors didn't question his absolute fervor far enough, for he intended to finish his studies as quickly as possible to rejoin the rest of the family on the mainland. Striking Out: When Ian and Merrick finally arrived, Aedwen had well established herself in Ul'dah; Coren on the other hand had grown enamored of the Maelstrom during their brief time in Limsa Lominsa, and joined them as soon as was practical. While he despised the local politics Merrick found it an easy enough city to settle into, establishing himself with the alchemist's guild and taking on students as a tutor in magic. It was not so easy as getting by in Sharlayan had been, as the prejudice against Ala Mhigan refugees grew by the day, and by association, against Merrick and his mother. Outside of their professional pursuits they made the refugees a priority, but among his countrymen Merrick found he was as much an outsider as he was to the people of Ul'dah. At War: As the events leading up to the Calamity unfolded Aedwen grew anxious, wanting to return to her homeland and attack the disease rather than continue treating the symptoms. Afterwards, her resolve was firm, and her husband and son accompanied her, meeting her sister Meralda once they crossed into Gyr Abania. Roughly five grueling years passed, trying to locate the scattered members of their family and helping those they could. In that time the unique magic Aedwen and Merrick wielded proved invaluable to the resistance, and Merrick eventually fell in with a small band roving the countryside to wreak merry havoc on Garlean operations. The unit was destroyed, slaughtered to a man, and Merrick thought dead until he stumbled out of the desert into Rhalgr's Reach roughly six months later. What happened he doesn't speak of, but it's easy to piece together from rumors: he was captured rather than killed like his fellows. One week before the Alliance took Castrum Oriens, Ian and Aedwen were killed. The State of the Family: Aedwen's father was executed during the rebellion prior to Garlean occupation, technically leaving her matriarch of the family. The family scattered during Garlean occupation, a further safeguard against someone managing to eliminate them, and it became Aedwen's responsibility to try and keep track of them, to settle disputes and continue maintaining a correct record of their lineage. With Aedwen's death that responsibility falls to Merrick, as does being certain that the following generation of the family is trained to their standards--a monumental task when he barely knows any of them, or even their current whereabouts. Some of these rumors are untrue, speculation, or are greatly exaggerated. Please feel free to add your own rumors under the Player Character category!
