Biography
Humble beginnings make for well-deserved endings...
Born to the breeding male and a hunting female of a small, nomadic tribe of Mi'qote inhabiting the Sagoli Desert, the newborn who would soon be known as R'zao Pascal lived out the few weeks of his infancy in relative peace and normality. A healthy, young boy expected to become a prodigious hunter, he was the apple of his mother's eye and a proud addition to his tribe.
Such idle hopes were not to be met, however.
The peaceful, traditional life he was expected to grow into was abruptly thrown into chaos when a warring clan of Amal'jaa launched a raid on their settlement in the dead of night. Blood was spilled, lives were lost and it was all R'zao's wounded mother could do to carry her child as far from the conflict as the fading reserves of her strength would allow.
The Twelve shone favourably upon her, and she stumbled upon the travelling workshop of magitek engineer, Gustav Pascal. With the life seeping out of her veins, the mother entrusted her cub to the stunned bystander. Her dying breath caught on her lips, she spoke his name for the first and last time: "R'zao".
Burdened unexpectedly with an infant Mi'qote, the ever-honorable Gustav buried the mother and vowed to raise her child to the best of his ability. Over the next eighteen years, father and son travelled across Eorzea. Gustav imparted his enthusiasm for engineering onto R'zao as often as he could, and it wasn't long before R'zao showed a natural genius for the subject. Hours at a time would be spent disassembling and reassembling all manner of machinery in Gustav's travelling workshop and, though they were from two entirely different worlds, both Gustav and R'zao loved each other dearly.
No force is a match for the rebelliousness of the youthful spirit, howwever. Not even love.
Ever the slacker and rebel despite his affinity for engineering, R'zao became engrossed in the seedier elements of the many towns and villages Gustav would bring his services to. Choosing to squander his mechanical aptitude to make easy gil on the side, R'zao would often use his father's spare parts to create weapons and gadgets which he used to cheat at gambling, pull cons or claim bounties on local beasts and monsters.
Gustav vehemently disapproved of his son's activities, and the two would often argue about the direction his life was taking. Gustav wanted R'zao to live a life that wold honour the memory of his mother, inheriting his travelling workshop and using it to help people. R'zao, on the other hand, wanted to be free of the restraints of responsibility his origins had placed on him.
It was after a heated argument on R'zao's nineteenth nameday that he lost his temper and abandoned Gustav, retreating into a nearby city to gamble away his earnings. During his absence, a lone Coeurl attacked and killed Gustav while he was carrying out repairs on the travelling workshop.
R'zao returned to a chilling sight: the only family he had left in the world fading in a pool of his own blood.
As R'zao cradled Gustav, the old man bequeathed his workshop and all the creations therein to his son, asking only that he use them to do good. Finally understanding the selfishness of his actions, R'zao made a tearful promise to help others whenever and wherever he could.
Under the starry night sky, Gustav Pascal's great mind thought its last.
R'zao had made his promise. He had seen the consequences of not being there for those who needed him. Inside Gustav's workshop, he discovered the brilliant engineer's final creation - the latest and greatest in his famous line of artisan magitek revolvers. Inscribed upon its grip were words to live by: "Like Father, Like Son".
Choosing to continue Gustav's legacy, R'zao set off with the travelling workshop and began operating under his family name: Pascal.
And it is that name that would soon be whispered by the downtrodden and the defenseless scattered across Eorzea, accompanied by tales of a daring, young Mi'qote machinist who drifts from town to town, hunting fearsome beasts, fixing machines and providing his services pro-bono to those without the means to pay for them. Though he still maintains his roguish nature, one thing remains certain: R'zao Pascal will never again let a cry for help go unanswered.
And so, his story begins anew...
Skills & Abilities
- ♦ MARKSMANSHIP - Having familiarised himself with the ins-and-outs of most firearms under from a young age, Pascal honed his marksmanship skills as a hunter and adventurer to become quite the crack shot. He often boasts that he could easily "shoot the cherry off an ice cream sundae", and anyone who's seen him in action would be hard-pressed not to take those words seriously.
- ♦ ENGINEERING - Pascal is an exceptional engineer, especially when it comes to weapons and traps. Having inherited a mastery of magitek from years of his father's tutelage, he possesses both a vast learned knowledge of machinery and an intuitive genius which allows him to come up with new ideas and concepts on the fly. Once the gears start turning in Pascal's mind, it isn't long before they start turning everywhere else.
- ♦ HUNTING AND TRACKING - As a Mi'qote, Pascal has been blessed with acute senses of sight, hearing and especially smell. Coupled with his personal experience hunting beasts and monsters alike, this makes him an extremely adept hunter and tracker who can pursue his pray through all manner of terrain.
- ♦ INTELLIGENCE - Pascal possesses the inquisitive, analytical mind of an engineer. It can be difficult for him to focus with so many ideas and concepts buzzing around his prodigious brain but, when he concentrates, there's little that can stand against his quick thinking.
- ♦ PERCEPTION - With an eye for detail and a surprising level of social awareness, Pascal is a highly perceptive person who is quick to notice when something is out of place. Behind his placid expression and languid demeanor, Pascal is always analysing and observing.
- ♦ MELEE COMBAT - Pascal may prefer to keep his enemies at a distance and stick to his guns when it comes to combat, but he's no stranger to a good fist fight. In his journeys across Eorzea, he has picked up a handful of techniques from Ala Mhigan mercenaries he's worked with, drunken monks he's won card games against and even the odd street fighte to create an eclectic, unrefined fighting style that relies largely on ducking, weaving and using his opponent's own momentum against them. Why fight someone when they can fight themselves?
- ♦ GAMBLING - Pascal may be young, but he's spent more than enough time traversing Eorzea's seedy underbelly to know his way around a pair of dice or a pack of cards. With a natural poker face and a predilection towards toying with others, it'd probably be more surprising if he weren't a good gambler.
- ♦ DEXTERITY - Pascal is a Mi'qote in the prime of his youth, with powerful leg muscles and the manual dexterity to prove it. With a body as nimble and sure-footed as his mind, it's no wonder he takes so easily to adventure.
- ♦ CHARISMA - Pascal may prefer his actions to speak louder than his words, but he likes his words to make an impression nonetheless. A smooth, confident and charming speaker with a spontaneous sense of humour, Pascal knows how to make friends and influence people despite his eccentricities.
- ♦ STRATEGY - Despite his intelligence, Pascal's impulsivity and irreverence make him poorly suited to long-term planning and positions of leadership.
- ♦ COOKING - He may be able to brew a mean cup of coffee, but Pascal should otherwise be kept away from the kitchen at all times. Many of his attempts at dishes can be more appropriately described as "durable" or "amorphous" than "edible".
- ♦ DIPLOMACY - Pascal is certainly charismatic, but his abrasive personality and tendency to speak his mind with little regard for the feelings and sentiments of others means that he isn't usually the person you want doing the talking when it really counts.
- ♦ WISDOM - Though he possesses book smarts and street smarts in spades, Pascal can be reckless and short-sighted at the best of times and possesses a lack of internal and external wisdom fitting for someone his age.
