Appearance

Rhyz is rather tall for a Midlander, though he often finds people who dwarf him still. He has brown, short, sometimes unkempt hair and green eyes. Despite living among the hot sands of Thanalan, he doesn't come across as looking too rugged or dirty. Also despite living in Thanalan, he's as white as a ghost at times, due to his nature of delving into caves and ruins, where the sun doesn't reach. Because he wears his heavy armor when he's not relaxing, he's built up quite the muscle mass, though it's still nothing to brag about. Also because of his constant wearing of heavy armor, he's learned very well to stand up straight, and very rarely slouches unless sitting down.

Probably to be assumed by his appearance, his voice is rather gentle and happy, despite sounding as matured as it does. That said, he doesn't let himself be too soft-spoken or sound overly full of emotions, not wanting his friendly demeanor to be mistaken as a weakness. Not to say he'll sound monotone all the time, but rather that if he's happy, he'll try not to express it too heavily in his tone, not wanting to come across as super excitable. There are no notable accents to be heard, though some have told him he's adopted a "Thanalan accent." He's not quite sure what that means, nor can he hear any sort of accent in his own voice.

Personality

Fun-loving and caring, he'll always stand up for friend and stranger alike. Terrible at giving advice, he'll always provide an ear to vent to or a shoulder to cry on, though he usually won't have much to say in return. He can get a little riled up when he catches someone doing something wrong, or hurting someone he cares for... this has led to him getting in more than a few fights, and he doesn't always come out on top.

He's deathly afraid of his own mortality, and often uses humor to avoid subjects of death, which doesn't always sit well with others who think he simply doesn't take death seriously. Despite this fear, he often puts other's safety before his own out of instinct alone. While he doesn't usually talk to others about his fears and worries, he's bad at hiding the expressions on his face, and can be read as easily as an open book.

When not getting into trouble, he enjoys a good book, or if it's night time he enjoys star-gazing. It may be hard to tell at first glance, due to his often times goofy demeanor, but Rhyz does enjoy pursuing knowledge and uncovering mysteries. He also enjoys a good drink and merriment, and will never turn down an offer to party with friends and strangers alike, throwing caution to the wind for the most part. He's not usually the life of the party, but he tries to have a good time and keep spirits high.

He can be serious if need be, though. He knows as well as anyone the hardships of life, and the value of hard work. He tries to be as reliable as he can, and while he sometimes slips up, he tries to take important matters as seriously as those around him. While he may not always seem it, he knows he can be counted on for just about anything, and will often urge those around to seek him out, day or night, if they need assistance.

Having grown up living a rather isolated life, he's learned to see beauty in even the little things. This trait was mostly developed a coping mechanism to deal with being rejected and betrayed by people who didn't like him, simply because his family were refugees. Now however, he sees it as a positive thing, knowing that no matter how bad a day goes, he can take solace in something as simple as a sunset, and feel his worries wash away.

He tends to value self-preservation over all else; a response to him living a life in which he could really only count on himself. This used to mean that he would simply run from a fight if it meant he could live another day. Lately though, this concept has been conflicting his recent desire to protect those around him. Slowly though, he's been trying to rid himself of this trait, knowing that now, running from a fight means that someone else could get injured, or worse.

History

Born in Ul'dah shortly after his parents fled the chaos and annexation of Ala Mhigo, Rhyz grew up with only his father after his mother died during labor. He didn't mind, however, and was told all of the stories about his mother. His father tried hard to make a living in the city, while also homeschooling Rhyz. This went on until the age of 14, when Rhyz decided he wanted to train to fight, so he could one day leave the city and go on adventurers. Eager to both help his father make an income as well as make a name for himself, his father couldn't help but agree, though Rhyz would have to wait a year before he could train, in order to finish his studies. By the time he was 15, Rhyz signed up for the Gladiators Guild, and was put under the wing of Celeste, a rather hard-assed trainer who gave Rhyz no breaks. Their training went on for a few years, and once Rhyz was 19, Celeste thought his training complete and challenged him to a real duel, which he lost. Nevertheless, Celeste was proud of her pupil, claiming that he was the first one in a while that was able to put up such a good fight. For the first time since Rhyz had known her, she smiled at him, and he felt proud of himself. Confiding in him that she was giving up her days as an adventurer as well to dedicate her full time to the guild, she handed her blade - Maribelle - down to Rhyz, telling him that the blade had helped her through more than one predicament and that it would do the same for him. Graciously accepting it, Rhyz set out from the guild, but not before Celeste made him promise to return one day so they can have another match. Charles was hesitant to let his son go, and asked instead if Rhyz could help him take care of the people of Little Ala Mhigo for the time being. Charles figured his years spent as a merchant in the city could help him support the refugees financially, and so he set up shop there instead. Rhyz was enlisted as a guard, and at first the job was exciting. Keeping away the beasts and bandits of Thanalan proved more of a challenge than Rhyz anticipated, and he loved it. A year and a half passed, and slowly the threats to the camp diminished. Rhyz pleaded with his father once more to allow him to go out on an adventure, away from Little Ala Mhigo, Ul'dah, and even Thanalan. Charles, reluctant to agree, saw the fire in his son's eyes and didn't see any point in arguing against it. With a forced smile hiding away the worry, Charles agreed, but made his son promise to return unharmed from time to time. A bright-eyed Rhyz agreed and hugged his father, and set out the next day, being allowed to take the equipment he used as a guard.

Life Now

Rhyz lives as an adventurer, having no steady work but not minding it. On his travels, he'll occasionally pick up things that look like they could be valuable and will sell them in the cities to try to get by in between jobs. Having joined the 81st has provided him with some extra work to be sure, but he still likes to find odd jobs on the side to help keep something resembling a steady income. He's considered taking up where his father left off, and becoming a fulltime merchant, but the call of adventure is still very much alluring to him, and so he's put any plans as a merchant on hold for now.

Rhyz still holds tightly onto Maribelle, though he doesn't use the blade too often now out of fear that it'll break if he uses it too much. Still, he sees it as a lucky charm, and as a reminder of the tutor that made his dream possible. He still, of course, visits Celeste and the Guild, and helps train new students from time to time as well as spar with Celeste, who now views him almost as her equal. While she likely never will, Rhyz is happy to visit her on occasion and hang out with her like he would a family member. A few times, they've also discussed him taking up her mantle as a mentor in the guild, but for now he doesn't feel that he's quite ready to be teaching others when he still has so much to learn, himself.

Now that he's older and understands more about the state of the realm, he's slowly developed a deep-seated hatred for the Garleans, blaming them exclusively for the misfortune that befell his family and Ala Mhigo as a whole. He won't lash out at Garleans, or Garlean sympathizers however, but he has been known to speak his mind in passing (and get into one fight because of it). Despite his hate, he often gives groups of them a wide berth when given the chance, knowing full well that nothing good will come of him actively engaging with them, whether it be verbally or physically. Still, he's not as afraid of the sympathizers, and has been known to be more aggressive when interacting with them.

Fighting alongside others has changed many of Rhyz's perceptions on things, most notably when it comes to combat. Previously he only really fought for himself, or well enough to complete a task he was given. Now that he's made friends and allies, and has more experience with setting goals, he sees the need to train harder both to keep up with his friends, and to meet any goals he may set for himself. With that said, he knows he can rely on the friends he's made if he truly needs it - not letting his own pride get in his way. While he knows he has to give his all in a fight, he knows he doesn't need to push himself too far, that he has friends and allies that can pick up any slack if need be.

Having a lover has also changed his view on things. While not a stranger to romance and relationships, Hisano isn't what he would consider the "average woman," a fact that he's more than happy about. Having grown up in a city--even a city like Ul'dah--he never really needed to fight to protect a lover in the past. In Hisano's case though, he knows that there are no guards in the real world to protect her, and tries his hardest to train to protect her, even though he knows she's perfectly capable of defending herself. Despite his training not helping him as much as he would like (he usually looks as bad as his opponent at the end of a fight) he still puts himself second whenever they're in danger together. That aside, he knows that romance is rather foreign to her, and while he may not be able to protect her physical, he knows he can protect her from others trying to interfere with their relationship, or from her assumptions that things between them won't last. Reassuring her of some of these things has opened his eyes a bit to some new realities of his own, and new ways of seeing and approaching romance as a whole.*

Unlike as a child, he's become more open about his family being Ala Mhigan. His father would often advise him to tell people he was an Ul'dahn, so as to avoid announcing himself as a refugee, but he feels that's a wrong attitude to have. Despite that advice, many people in Ul'dah knew where his family came from, so he never saw any reason then to hide his lineage, and he certainly doesn't see any reason to do so now either. Even though he was born and raise in Ul'dah, he's rather proud of his lineage as an Ala Mhigan, mostly because of how well he's seen his people get by.

  • With Hisano being MIA, Rhyz has had to make ends meet without her, which meant either training harder to keep his life as an adventurer, or sticking with a more peaceful line of work. He chose both. First deciding to take up his father's mantle as a trader, Rhyz made the trek from his home in La Noscea to Ul'dah nearly everyday, where he sold various goods. His business did surprisingly well, and considering he didn't need as much gil now that he was alone, he was happy to donate some of his earnings to the Ala Mghigan refugees. Alongside that, however, he was training daily, having made a few new friends to help him along the way. His main driving force for a time was that his training would allow him to go on a hunt for Hisano, despite his new friend's lack of support on that course of action. He went as far as to abandon his business and set out on a month long journey, only to come back home empty handed. While he won't admit it, the journey as a whole has made him a good deal more cynical, as well a great deal more abrasive. Now, his only real drive to continue his training is that it makes him money in the end. While he wouldn't mind more of a reason to wake up every morning, he's content enough with where he is.
Adopting a more aggressive policy has translated into his attitudes towards combat as well. One could say he's reverted to his past attitudes to fighting--willing to fight just about anyone he sees on the morally incorrect side of the compass--even if it means likely arrests. Coupled with this is a near mercilessness when it comes to accepting jobs. While he's certainly retained his morals when it comes to jobs he will and won't take, he has much less hesitation when "dealing" with those he needs to, be they bandit or otherwise. What was once more of a desire to injure has now become a desire to deal with in the quickest way possible, as if having to do the actual work is a nuisance. Still, most employers can safely say Rhyz gets the job done.

Family

- Sophia Xerione: Rhyz's mother, who unfortunately passed away during childbirth. Despite this, his father was sure to tell him stories about his mother, to ensure that even though he never met her, Rhyz would at least know what kind of person his mother was. From what he was told, his mother lived a simple life, helping with his father's business by fishing and giving his father the biggest catches for him to sell. When not helping with the business, she would often be found reading or writing, a passion Rhyz's father picked up and passed down to their son as well.

- Charles Xerione: Rhyz's father, who more recently passed away at the hands of a group of bandits. Rhyz's primary caretaker, Charles did all he could to ensure that, if nothing else, his son could eat. Having been a merchant in Ala Mhigo, Charles had no trouble being able to afford a small home in Ul'dah and set up a small business in the city. Due to being a refugee though, his business was often ignored save for the occasional buyer, and less occasional thugs that would pass by to harass the man. He never let it bother him though, he couldn't, he had to keep moving to provide for his son. After Rhyz had graduated from the gladiator's guild, Charles decided that his time and skills as a merchant would be better used in helping the refugees of Little Ala Mhigo, bringing Rhyz with him and out of the city and their old home. In the camp, Charles ran a rather successful business, often travelling to other towns to sell merchandise and donating some of his profits to the betterment of the camp.

- Celeste Delecrux(NPC): Rhyz's mentor in the gladiator's guild, Rhyz didn't like Celeste at first - she was cold and stern, barely even meeting his gaze and never smiling at him. After years of training under her though, she began to see much promise in him, and her cold exterior began to crumble around him. It took many years, but finally she smiled at him, and talked to him like a friend. Because of their years together and eventual status of friendship, Rhyz looks to her as a sort of mother-figure - often going to her when he needs advice or someone to talk to when no one else is available. Despite their rough start, it would be hard to look at the two and assume they were anything but great friends, always looking to help the other, and always happy to just talk for hours on end and share a drink.
Friends

- Hisano Ren: Outside of family, Hisano was one of the first people Rhyz feels truly cared about him, and that he truly cared for. At first thinking she was rather cold and preferring never to have friends, he quickly realized this wasn't true after the two of them spent time together following a rather rough battle. Despite having a rather tough exterior, she opened up just a bit to him and asked him to show her the beauty that he saw in the world. He was happy to help her out, only looking to make a friend at first. The more time they spent together though, the more beauty he saw in her, and slowly he began falling in love with her. Convinced she'd dismiss his feelings, he choked down his pride and confessed them to her, pleasantly surprised to hear that she felt the same. Though it was never officially spoken, the two had definitely become a couple, and despite their occasional turbulence, Rhyz was sure Hisano was the woman he wanted to spend his life with, and that feeling appeared to be mutual. Shortly after their engagement though, she left on a job and never returned. It's been months since then, and Rhyz still hasn't heard from or of her. Whether she intentionally didn't return, or simply couldn't, Rhyz will likely never know. While his feelings for and about his past fiance haven't necessarily diminished, he's tried not to let the loss govern his life, and has moved on rather healthily.

- Leo Sugan (NPC/Alt): Leo was a classmate with Rhyz when he was training in the gladiator's guild. They weren't exactly friends--in fact, Leo often bullied Rhyz--but Leo was one of the few people that even interacted with Rhyz, aside from his mentor. Now, several years later, Rhyz and Leo have bumped into one another again, and while Rhyz was immediately wary of Leo, given their past history, he accepted an offer to spar together in the colosseum. The "spar" ended up being more conversation than fighting, but Rhyz began to see Leo as something of a friend after the two talked. Now, Leo has become among Rhyz's best friends, their history having been put behind them now. Leo has become something of a saving grace in Rhyz's life, helping him train to get back to his job as an adventurer, and being someone that Rhyz feels he can rely on, or at least someone that can distract him from his worries.

- R'miah Tosh: R'miah and Rhyz had spoken and multiple occasions due to various reasons, but it was never anything more than passing comments. After hunting a Sagolii Sandworm together in a hunting party, they began to talk more, and she even offered to help Rhyz treat his injuries, with some potions she made. That, coupled with her support during a traumatic moment in Rhyz's life, has caused him to consider her something similar to a friend, though he still doesn't know her very well.

- Sami Molkoh:

Having spent a decent amount of time with Sami in the short time he's been in the 81st, he definitely enjoys her energy. Being high-spirited and always seeming to keep a good mood in the air, which is something Rhyz appreciates. Though they're not exactly friends, she's still someone that he can have a good time around and enjoy a conversation with. He looks forward to really getting to know her, when they both aren't busy.
Acquaintances

- Onuma Ahntifi: Onuma was one of the first people that spoke to Rhyz when he joined the 81st, welcoming him to the company and even going as far as to offer to help teach him her techniques when it came to smithing, after hearing that he had an interest in it but was self-taught thus far. While they never worked too closely together during his time with the 81st, he hopes to one day be able to learn a thing or two from her in the future, as a friend rather than as an ally.

- Synerva Devereux: Having only spoken to her a few times, the two of them have fought together on multiple occasions now. While much of Synerva's past remains a mystery to him after a run-in with a group of Ishgardian mercenaries that were looking for her, he trusts her anyway and sees her as a friend. After talking to her in depth about why he trusts her though, he came to question if he had truly lived a sheltered enough life to be so easy to trust people. This has more or less driven him to try to learn more from her passively, and realize why he truly does trust her.

- Catara Celah:

Rhyz had seen her around once or twice before, shortly after joining the 81st. With that though, he never really spoke to her save for once when she joined a group he was speaking with. After finally having a one-on-one with her, he found the potential for a great friend in her. While they seem to share little interests in common, save for their fascination in the world and books, Rhyz offered to help her do some gathering for her botany interest when they're both free, having never really thought of botany before, but certainly eager to see how interesting it could be.

Rumors

Common

Easily overheard. Use these freely!

-"Heard he was one of the few that graduated from his class here. Not because of how good he was with a sword either, but because he was too stubborn to stay down no matter how hard he was hit." -- Gladiator Guild Student

-"He always came in late at night and would head down to the arena, usually with his mentor following behind. He usually came back up with a few extra bruises." -- Gladiator Guild Receptionist

-"I remember he tried to fight off some thugs that stole my coinpurse. He lost the fight, but he came through with his promise and managed to snatch my purse before getting the shit beat out of him." -- Ul'dahn Citizen

-"He got in trouble with us one too many times. Nothing serious, just liked to try to be a vigilante or something and fight people he claimed were up to know good. In his defense, most were up to no good." -- Ul'dahn Guard

-"He was the merchant's son if I remember; went off to be a hero or something, said he'd come back after he made a name for himself." -- Little Ala Mhigan Refugee

-"He worked with me on guard duty for a bit. He was pretty good with a sword - better than anyone else in the camp - but I'd caught him daydreaming on the job one too many times." -- Little Ala Mhigan Guard

-"He was always so wrapped up in his tales. Whenever he wasn't working, I'd see his nose deep between the pages of a book. Hard not to admire someone who can make the best out of their situation, though." -- Little Ala Mhigan Refugee

Uncommon

A little more difficult to overhear. Use these sparingly!

-"I'd always seen him walking around with this blond Miqo'te - I think she called herself Natalie? You could tell they were a couple, but I don't think he knew she was sleeping with the whole city. Pretty sure she took off shortly after he did though." -- Ul'dahn People Watcher

-"I'd seen his matches in the arena, and he's nothing to scoff at! Boy isn't too great with a sword, but he really knows how to use that shield of his. Seen him knock a man to his ass just as easily as he blocked an attack!" -- Ul'dahn Arena-Goer

-"I've seen him around a bit more recently. Last time I saw him, he was with some tanned Hyuran girl with dark hair and daggers on her hip - smart girl. They stabled their chocobo and headed in, then left the same day. Think I heard something about them going back to the Mist." -- Ul'dahn Gate Guard

-"I think he still comes in from time to time, to help his old mentor teach some of her students. I've heard bits and pieces of their conversation - usually talk of whether or not he'll become a new mentor here." -- Gladiator Guild Receptionist

-"Charles was the best thing that happened to our little camp. It's a shame his son didn't stick around to take over the business - boy had a silver tongue that rivaled any merchant's in Thanalan - but if he'd rather be a hero, then all power to him." -- Little Ala Mhigan Elder

-"He used to go off to disrupt bandits so they wouldn't be able to mess with his father's merchant business. I don't think he ever killed anyone, but he'd steal weapons or armor from the bandits, even bring 'em back for his father to sell sometimes." -- Little Ala Mhigan Storyteller

Rare

Very difficult to hear. Please ask before using!

-"I heard his family is actually from Ala Mhigo, even though they lived in the city for so many years. Asked him about it once, but he didn't seem too fond to talk about it. He didn't seem angry with me asking, just slightly annoyed at the name 'Ala Mhigo.' He seemed rather proud to admit that I was right, but asked that I not spread that news around much. Hard to blame him, most of the people that knew his lineage hated him for it, just because that meant he was a refugee." -- Gladiator Guild Graduate

-"I saw him get into a huge argument with some Garlean sympathizer that rolled through. Hard to blame him, a lot of us don't like them, but he seemed especially heated. I remember hearing something about how the Garleans were the reason his mother had to die, and shortly after the two were on the ground fighting before the guards came." -- Ul'dahn Noble
