Character

General

Sigrid is a Highlander woman of Ala Mhigo that was too young to know what was happening when the city fell and her family fled. She's since taken to becoming a sailor in her teenage years, starting with piracy but moving to legitimate sailing practice with the Maelstrom a couple of years after the Calamity. She tries to be a generally good person but has a rough exterior and some anger issues that can be hard to overcome at times. That said, she's a steadfast and loyal friend and sailor both, quick to laugh but also quick to scream in rage once she gets unchained.

Appearance

Sigrid is a remarkably tall, well-muscled woman. In the past she has been, from a distance, mistaken to be Elezen or Roegadyn based on height and stature alone, a mistake she seems reasonably amused by when it happens. She carries herself tall and proud, as befits her heritage and choice of profession. By most measures Sigrid could be described to have a 'rough' sort of attractiveness or appeal. She keeps her long, white-blue hair braided and mostly out of her face, of a medium-long length. She very clearly dyes her hair, as darker hair can be seen at the roots. Her face bears its share of scars, in particular one goes down her left eye, though the organ itself is present and fully functional. Her eyes are a pleasant green, usually friendly enough. Sigrid is somewhat paler than most Ala Mhigans, though there's a light, healthy tan to her skin more often than not. Her body has a few scars here and there as well, though less than one would expect given her profession and general lack of armor that she seems to favor. The sailor has well-toned, firmly muscled arms, legs, and torso, with a rather sizable bust. She, surprisingly, seems to wear a little bit of cosmetics here and there, having some dark eye shadow on more often than not.

As for attire, she can most often be seen in a metallic blue set of plated armor, kept reasonably shiny but not excessively maintained. She wears a white skirt that often gets blemished or frayed from combat as a decorative piece, with greaves and vambraces underneath in a similar blue. A plain crown-like adornment rests on her head, gold and inlaid with a few jewels. It's likely some prize or another from combat. When in more casual settings Sigrid tends to wear far less, enjoying strap-covered Ala Mhigan attire, or loose, open shirts with easy to move in skirts and boots. She sometimes wears a bandanna when she's feeling particularly sailor-y.

For equipment, she carries a sword at her side and a lightly enchanted shield on her back, such that the shield glows in a pale light when wielded. She also carries a few tomahawks on her person and a boarding hook, not letting go of marauder traditions even though she took another path. Indeed, in times of anger or stress if one looks in her eyes, a fire or beast within that's struggling to be unchained is evident. When Sigrid lets loose fully, it's a sight to behold, and rather un-paladinly.

Personality

If there's one word that best describes Sigrid, it's genuine. She seems to barely hide anything about her emotions or opinions. If she likes a person, she'll make that clear in her word choice and pleasant demeanor. If she doesn't, she gets rather brusque and rude in short order. In general, she seems 'crude', but with a kind heart under all of that. She generally tries to be amenable and friendly to most on first impressions, and is always fond of good company and humor. Her own humor borders from observatory to a dry sense of humor. That being said, there's clearly some edge to Sigrid, something lying just underneath her skin that is docile most of the time, but can be awoken to terrible potential. She is generally slow to anger, though her state of intoxication does change that, but when she does get angry, she gets viciously angry, especially if in battle. Yet in general, she's a friendly, casual person that doesn't try to make enemies, though she throws good-natured jibes at all people whenever she can.

Combat

General

Sigrid fights with an interesting mix of gladiator and marauder sensibilities. She tends to fight with both sword and shield, but she goes for a very aggressive style with it. She tries to press the attack whenever possibile, using her sword and shield proactively to bash attacks away and create openings of her own. She prefers to let blows rain on her and be defended by her armor - Or elsewise provoke her anger - Instead of actively defend all that much. When she gets really worked up, Sigrid tends to discard her shield altogether and two-hand her sword, wielding it in a savage, aggressive fashion, much like she might a greataxe. She modifies her style with a few marauder tools, including her tomahawks and boarding hook, which she still tries to use to some extent. She's not too skilled in paladin-magic/spirit manipulation through her sword, as she lives the paladin lifestyle somewhat loosely for now.

Tendencies

Likes

  • Alcohol: Perhaps too much at times. Sigrid, by most definitions, is an alcoholic. She enjoys being pleasantly inebriated, and enjoys its coping capabilities. Ale or grog is always preferred over fancy drinks.
  • Sailing: Sigrid wouldn't be who she is if this wasn't in her blood. She loves the open sea, boats, and most things associated with sailing. Her mood tends to sour if she spends far too many weeks on land.
  • Adrenaline: This, above all, is what she lives for. Through the heat of battle, flames of physical passion, risky sailing maneuvers/conditions, and standing firm against threats. Sigrid loves the high that comes from these things, and constantly seeks out new experiences to thrill her.

Dislikes

  • Garleans: They took her city, her birthright, from her. She wants to make them pay for what they did to Ala Mhigo.
  • Dishonesty: An open woman, as subtle as a rampaging giant, Sigrid enjoys honesty from those she interacts with. Deceit, misdirection, and lies are a fast way to sour her mood and opinion.
  • Propriety: Sigrid is also a rather crude woman, dressing casually at most times, and carries herself with a light, casual demeanor. She's not a fan of overly formal events or occasions, thinking them to be very, very stuffy affairs indeed.

Hobbies/Talents

  • Wood-Whittling: Sigrid enjoys whittling deadwood into artistic figurines, though simple and crude.
  • Harmonica: Though she's not as skilled at music like a bard might be, Sigrid can play harmonica to pass the time, being reasonably proficient with it.
  • Scrimshaw: A sailor's pastime. Sigrid enjoys carving things into pieces of bone, typically things meaningful to Highlander clans.
  • Fishing: For the rare times she wants to relax, what better than to relax and get a meal for the night?

Other

  • Sigrid has within her the spirit of the Warrior, having trained long hours with axe and worked to understand her rage and anger when it arises. She received her soul crystal from a shallow coastline a year or so ago, not knowing the source of it but understanding the gravity. The beast within her is loosely chained, as she never received any 'formal' training, if such a thing could be said. She keeps it in leash most of the time, but is prone to frightening outbursts of anger and a complete loss of control over herself if pressed hard enough.
  • Recently, Sigrid started down the path of the paladin, after a long time of friends constantly fretting about her lack of armor and general overaggressive style. She's learning the sword and shield and proving an apt hand at it, but the finer points of paladinhood still elude her. Still, she was seen to have a good heart and earnest desire by the Sultansworn, and was so given a Free Paladinhood, tentative should she act out too much.
  • Really enjoys sea shanties, though when on land she usually isn't in much of a position to sing them.
  • Generally friendly and often approaches strangers completely out of the blue to engage in conversation.

Relationships

Family

To her knowledge, Sigrid is an only child (Certainly, her parents never discussed siblings while they were alive, though that might have been to conceal pain). Her parents died when she was around ten or eleven years of age, part of the unit that fought Leviathan with the Company of Heroes. In life, they were both Highlander soldiers, ashamed to have to flee Ala Mhigo as they did. Sigrid is unaware of any extended family, such is how they were scattered after the fall. It might well be that some live in Little Ala Mhigo, or in the city proper under Garlean occupation.

Friends

Laen Ruelfal: Sigrid met the courier during a Valentione's Day ball, and they became friends in short order. Though poor timing has prevented them from becoming more, Sigrid still enjoys a healthy, if occasionally bitter and resentful, friendship with the merchant.

Arala Makeo: More an acquaintance and ally than a true friend, at least for now, Sigrid met this paladin while fighting her in the Grindstone. She took to calling her 'Kitten' out of mildly racist fondness in short order, and does seem to hope for a rematch with her, and more time spent in friendly company.

Rosalin Menoly: From her time in the Harbingers of Dawn, Sigrid befriended and became close to this woman. Unfortunately, they proved incompatible in more intimate matters, Sigrid still cares for her quite a lot.

Oniyuri Tsukashima: Another friend from her time in the Harbingers. The Doman's strange mannerisms and way of speaking intrigue Sigrid, and she does look forward to learning more about her.

Enemies

Sigrid has been 'lucky' enough to avoid any notable enemies. For now.

Rumors

Common Rumors

  • "Eh, Sigrid? She's a kind enough lass, seems real genuine and honest. Just don't get on her bad side, aye?" - Midlander merchant at Limsa Lominsa
  • "She just has that look about her. Highlander. Ala Mhigan. Weird a lass like that would come to Limsa Lominsa, but I suppose they don't all linger at Little Ala Mhigo." - Elezen observer
  • "Wicked with that axe, the lass is. She has to be guild-taught." - Marauder

Moderate Rumors

  • "See that woman here more days than I don't, I swear. Always seems to be either ordering a drink or restocking her stash." - Baderon, Proprietor of The Drowning Wench
  • "Sigrid? Aye, I know th'lass. Word is she sailed pirate when she were younger. Up and disappeared from that life a couple of years after the Calamnity, though. Can't much blame her. Poor pickings, after that, and the work felt like taking candy from a Lalafell with how we were all hurting." - Roegadyn sailor at Limsa Lominsa
  • "There's something behind those eyes, I swear. I don't know whether to worry or not when an operation gets sour with Sigrid around. The woman's made for stress, one way or another. Question always is, will she stop and calm down after the enemy is dead, or will she just lose herself to whatever beast drives her?" - Maelstrom Captain
  • "Heard how she got that magitek armor of her's? Well, during Operation Archon, she.. Lead ten men into Castrum Marinum, lopped off the heads of thirty Garleans, and rode off in victory with that armor!" - Storm Private (Intoxicated)
  • "I heard she defeated the Hyena in her Grindstone debut with nary a scratch, and one hand tied behind her back!" - Lalafell Fight Enthusiast.

Rare Rumors

  • "Did y'hear what th'scout said? Swore he heard some'un like th'Lieutenant screamin' bloody rage down in the Mines the other night. Also saw some blood-drenched figure stalk out of them in th'night, but it were too dark t'make it out. But tha'd be insane. No one goes down into those mines alone without good reason or a deathwish..." - Storm Private at Camp Overlook
  • "Some nights when I'm closing up shop, I see some red-haired sailor on the pier, just looking out to the sea with moon and stars overhead. Whoever she is, she looks rather lonely. Guess it's a common thing for them sailors. Weeks, months at sea.. Can't be easy." - Fishmonger
