Styrnbera Sylbraelwyn is as unique a priestess of her order as she is an individual amongst her kin. Stout and sweet as a pint of the honey wine she favors, the Hellsguard bears a gentleness of nature rarely rivalled by others who worship Nald with the same devotion. While not naive, she is unfalteringly optimistic, offering prayers and benedictions freely to those in need. Despite her scarred visage, the aura of warmth that exudes from her person is difficult to miss.

Character

General

Given Name: Styrnbera Sylbraelwyn [STEERN-behr-AH|SEEL-brehl-VYN]: The name she adopted upon reaching adulthood. As the small enclave in Alabathia's Spine devoted to Nald from which she hails has maintained its devotion for centuries with only moderate outside interaction, the Hellsguard there have yet to shirk their full names (or the language itself) in favor of their first name's translation. While in her community, she is rarely referred to as 'Sylbraelwyn' since she reached maturity except in formal instances that require it (such as by her elders).

Aliases/Nicknames: Star Berry : The translation of her chosen name, often given to non-Roegadyn she encounters in her travels to accomodate their typically untrained tongues. The name 'Styrnbera' was taken after her rite of passage, wherein at the age of fifteen, she ventured into the wild below their mountainous home to meditate for three weeks without aid. During this time, she subsisted off the late winter snow of the lower slopes and would have undoubtedly succumbed to starvation if not for the gifts of pale, glimmering fruit left to her by some unknown source. A few of these were returned to the elders for examination and labelled starberries, reasoned to have been dropped by some unwitting bird trying to return to its nest only to be startled repeatedly by the fasting youth. Still, 'Star Berry' was taken as her formal name.
The fruits were, in fact, snowberries. These fruit are poisonous to many more fragile humanoids, but nutritiously valuable enough to subsist upon for short stretches of time for the strong-stomached Roegadyn.
Cyclops : A more intimidating label repeatedly bestowed upon her during her travels. Born with a congenital cataract in her left eye, Star Berry nearly lost the ocular altogether while undergoing her combat training. The vicious scar that stretches from lower cheek to forehead on that side and the milky lense of that eye has incited her to wearing an eyepatch regularly which obscures most, but not all of the unsavory aspect of her otherwise handsome face. This tactic, however, tends to be more intimidating rather than less.

Current Residence: Wanderer

Relationship Status: ----*

Sexuality: Pansexual

Romance: Panromantic

Religion: Nald'thal, the Traders; Menphina, the Lover.

Appearance

Height: 6 fulms, 3 ilms - Probably the absolute shortest Roegadyn woman you will ever meet.

Weight: 250 ponz - Often obscuring her wealth of powerfully corded and well-developed musculature is a generous layer of fat that lends to the appearance of a voluptuous figure which borders on corpulent. While her weight is healthy, her height does nothing to even out the distribution of meat on her bones.

Body: Styrnbera possesses a stout figure for her race, inarguably the shortest even within her enclave. Her inherently hardy bone structure prevents her from appearing portly; rather, more stocky than some of her taller, leaner kinswomen. A strong neck leads to broad, squarish shoulders, and proportionate arms to terminate in large hands. Broad fingers bear well-kept nails and noteworthy callouses across thick knuckles. Deltoids, biceps, and the leaner muscles of her forearms are all pronounced, bulging slightly even at rest as testament to the discipline through which they were forged.
A hardy ribcage tapers sharply at the upper waistline only to bloom again into broad hips. Her abdomen is long, and while thick, still reveals the outline of the hardened muscle beneath made softer by a layer of plush. Her legs, like her arms, are equally strong though the swells in thighs and calves does not lend to the illusion of length. The generous endowments of a shapely backside and the heavy swell of bosom are typically obscured as much else beneath layers of linen and leather, serving only to give her a heavier-set appearance than the Hellsguard truly deserves.
Styrnbera is capable of graceful movement, her celerity and dexterity surprising in short bursts. Fluidity is a trait that she maintains at all times though when peaceful, the same ease of motions seem almost sluggish. While she can maintain a quick walk with a lengthy stride, she favors a slower gait and more relaxed posture whenever circumstances allow and will often fall behind.

Complexion: A unique characteristic of the Hellsguard is one of the first one might note upon an initial encounter. Her skin is remarkably pale, a far cry from the deep reds and browns most Hellsguard are known for. The milky white is only slightly tinged by pink, spottled in clusters on the shoulders, hips, back, chest, and face with faint freckles. The equal pale of her hair, from braided mane to thick, frosty lashes combined with the reddish hue of her irises hint at albinism, though she finds her coloration rather unremarkable and will openly claim that her mother and grandfather look much the same. She suffers as much in glaring sunlight as she does of shame, socially; which is to say, she does not suffer at all from either.

  • 'Tattoos': There is a black outline of a shield in the center of her brow. A jewel of her namesday appears embedded therein through some means. The stone is pink tourmaline in the deep red variety. She also bears a black tattoo entwining the symbols of Nald and Menphina on the back of her neck between her shoulders.
  • 'Piercings': Both ears, twice in the lobe and once in the cartilage on either side.

Face: Her facial shape is strong, not quite so afflicted with plush as the rest of her, though there is an undeniable plumpness in a shapely, rose-colored mouth and upper cheeks. Features like a broad jaw, a pronounced, aquiline nose, and the dark patch of skin above her nostrils define her Hellsguard heritage better than her size, weight, or hue. The creams and pale pinks of her palette make the deep garnet of her right eye more noticeable as well as the pinkish, milky hue of its twin and the jagged scar that 'decorates' the flesh above and below it. The fringe of over-thick white lashes decorate almond-shaped eyes with mild epicanthic folds.
Altogether, like many, she has a fairly masculine face made more feminine by the sheer softness of color and flesh therein (barring the left side's damage) Unlike some, however, she does make conscious effort to decorate her face and will apply some shadows or lip stains when the thought occurs to her. Whether or not this is merely for her own sake, to lessen the appearance of roughness, or to appear more attractive to others is debatable.
Styrnbera is prone to smiling a great deal and frowning very little, lending to smoothness of a high brow and the light lines at either side of her mouth. When her joy is particularly strong, dimples appear in her cheeks which she can become mildly self-conscious of when made aware of them. This is likely to lead to trying to frown, imminent failure, then boisterous laughter on her part.

Hair: The locks of hair are worn in clean braids that range from the scalp to the tips; most ending in or ornamented with silver clasps and bells. Her texture of her hair, when freed, is silken, and the length nearly a quarter more than it is while braided. Loose, the stained tips reach her mid-back while the mass is composed both of waves and curls. The lack of real color in her skin is much the same in her hair; the whole of her mane so pale a blonde it borders on white. Only on rare occasion will she allow the locks to be seen free, however. Given that she goes to such lengths to braid it regularly, this is likely more because of the effort she puts into arranging it rather than any dislike of the strands in their natural state.
Periodically, the Hellsguard will stain the tips of her hair red with dyes that she will make of berries or, more often of late, procure from an alchemist. While she admits to enjoying the colors, the effort is made partially of some devotion to her patron, Nald. Another voluntary confession is that she takes great pride in her hair for a woman with a penchant for pugilism. Such length and embellishment might seem a hindrance to a martial combatant, though while fighting, her reason for pride becomes clearer. She is not so prideful in the appearance of the braids so much as she is the tempting handles they present to her opponents. Not once in her life has someone managed to grasp a handful in a fight and in all truth, Star Berry seems to be waiting for someone to accomplish the feat.
One can typically hear her coming before they see her, simply from the tinkling sounds of her many silver adornments clicking against one another while she walks.

Fashion: Unlike the mild effort of make up and the greater effort put into her hair, Star Berry seems rather unconcerned about her style of dress. She will wear just about anything she can, and in whatever assortment is most convenient. It may become rather apparent that she either has no fashion sense whatsoever in this capacity or that she may, in fact, be colorblind as this careless mentality towards dressing often results in a horrid clash of colors that can be offensive to the eyes. She seems to favor no colors or cuts, and will dress in just about anything that fits; something of a feat all on its own.
If she has any wealth, she does not show it in her attire. The majority of the fabric is composed of linen or wool, both of which she seems rather indifferent towards. Other pieces will fortunately be composed of leather, typically black but sometimes brown. She tends to wear shapeless pieces, though the reason for that is less that she is concerned about ease of movement or even that she is more comfortable and is often only because she picked them up somewhere and has yet to give up wearing them. While she will patch her clothes on occasion, many of them are threadbare or moth-eaten.
She does wear six, heavy silver bangles apart from her earrings and hair ornaments as a form of jewelry. Three on each wrist, each bears a repeating pattern of the symbol of Nald. Star Berry does not permit these being removed for any reason and will become aggressive if a circumstance arises wherein any one or all of them might be forcibly removed.

Behavior

Voice: Styrnbera has a rather obvious accent that she -can- but rarely if ever, tries to hide. Her pronunciations can be a bit odd, 'w's often turning to 'v's and 'th's becoming 't's and there is usually a discernable upwards inflection to be found. Still, she maintains a pleasantly smooth voice in speaking and enjoys engaging in lengthy conversations for great spans of time, never seeming to run out of questions or winding tales. On occasion she will lapse into silence or request it outright, fading into periods of quiet introspection before resuming a conversation.
She does not sing when she can avoid it and the reason why is fairly obvious early on when forced to do so. Anything outside of a jaunty tavern song seems to be beyond her capability to perform. Though she speaks in a sweet albeit languid way, her singing can be, for lack of a better word, squawkish, breaking at anything above or below her natural range.

Demeanor: This Roegadyn, for one who enjoys a good fight, is as non-aggressive as one can be. Her laid-back demeanor comes dangerously close to lethargic at times, as she seems somewhere between perpetually calm and eternally jovial. It is incredibly difficult to offend her. Even speaking poorly about her friends, origins, or deity will rarely rile her, and instead incites more patience and greater efforts at diplomacy. If she is not eating, she is drinking. If she is not drinking, she is sleeping. If she is not sleeping, she is laughing. If she is not laughing, she is fighting. Otherwise, she is doing some combination of those and enjoying herself immensely.
In her opinion, life is about balance. Her dedication to her cause may seem only to exist at the back of her mind, but in truth it is always at the forefront. If faced with any circumstance involving evil or sorrow, her personality will change immediately to handle the situation then and there. As mellow as she is, Styrnbera is not lazy, and will not shirk important duties or try to devalue the problems of others. Her sincerity is palpable and positive as she may be, she is never saccharine. If she offends someone she is not slow to apologize; more than willing to admit when she is wrong. While she is full unto bursting with a certain strain of Roegadyn pride, this only applies to her faith in the Twelve, in herself, and in others.
There are topics that, when broached, will result in Styrnbera becoming uncharacteristically serious. Many of these deal with what she considers 'dark' or 'evil' magic. While much of this relates to summoning, void magic, and necromancy, she also harbors a more mild distaste regarding certain magics meant for succor. Specifically, the Hellsguard does not approve of bringing someone back from even the brink of death and will readily cite that doing so is slighting both the 'victim' and the deities, themselves. While such debates have never come to violence, she does tend to give many healers who liberally wield such abilities a wide berth.
She is naturally protective of all individuals weaker (in any capacity, from her point of view) than herself. She will rally to the defense of almost anyone, even a suspected criminal, if she believes them innocent or capable of redemption. This desire to protect and preserve has resulted in a number of poor circumstances that the Hellsguard has learned from but does not regret. Following the tenets of her belief, any who are yet alive that face death may be preserved in the hopes that they may change their ways, barring capital sins such as murder or malicious magic use. This same sentiment extends even towards lesser beasts and humanoids including the Beastmen. While conflict is natural and punishment is acceptable for lesser crimes committed, if Star Berry does not outright rally to the guard of one who faces unjust execution, she will at the very least refuse to partake in any way.

Quirks: Star Berry has a terrible habit of dozing off, particularly when others are regaling her with extremely long monologues. This borderline narcolepsy does surface at other, often inconvienient, instances such as while huddled in the cold, while bathing, or during night watches. The depth of her sleeps can be unnerving to others, as she can at times fall so far as to sleep through thunderstorms. As an example, it has been rumored in her home that she had once fallen asleep during a rockslide in her youth, only to emerge later, relatively unscathed and only disoriented. Another rumor is that she slept through the fall of Dalamud. Other times, she sleeps remarkably lightly and may wake at nothing more than a sensed shift in her surroundings. While these instances seem random, they can be attributed to her length of disciplined training during which she was taught to sleep whenever possible but never to sleep through real danger. Years and years of being startled to waking through a mock attack by her trainers has gifted her with a sort of sixth sense and heightened response to threats to her person or the well-being of her companions'. She can even recite much of whatever was spoken to her during her slumber without fail although making any sense of it takes a length of time upon waking.
The stout woman also has a great fear of water which will become apparent at any time she is faced with a depth greater than that of a moderately sized bath tub. Her fear is rational to some extent as first, she has little experience with deep water and second, she has plummeted like a boulder on the occasions where she has. These occurrences are difficult to explain for most, as Styrnbera has an wealth of fat on her figure which should, by all rights, provide some form of buoyancy if nothing else. Regardless, no manner of reason or effort has alleviated her penchant for sinking and subsequent fear of drowning. For these reasons she strays far from lakes, seas, deep ponds, and recreational pools whenever she can and if forced to travel over such, tends to be more tense and uncomfortable than at any other point. She does not despise or dislike water, clearly, as she has a great affection for her own cleanliness.
Styrnbera has some issues in terms of navigation, which is to say that she becomes easily lost. For example, her efforts to reach Coerthas to visit the prayerstone of Menphina took nearly five cycles to accomplish, during which she ended up in each of the other city-states in lieu of her intended destination. She has spent countless fortnights wandering forests and plains, managing to miss nearly every sign or recognizable landmark only to end up in the same place where she started. Even in cities, without ample guidance, she will inevitably find herself at the opposite end of where ever she means to head and may take several suns to find her way to any specified area. The cause for this, aside from lack of fortune, may have to do with her tendency to daydream constantly while going anywhere. While the Hellsguard is relaxed enough not to mind wasting her time this way, fulfilling any duty in a timely manner requires near constant direction.

Intelligence: As a priestess of Nald, the extent of her knowledge regarding both Nald and Thal as well as Menphina and the rest of the pantheon is both broad and deep. Her familiarity with rites, holy scripture, and so on are impressive to many, easily in keeping with many other holy men and women of different faiths in Eorzea. These are the matters on which her understanding is the most powerful and while much of it is philosophical, large portions bear historical relevance as well. Her understanding of other faiths is a matter she is constantly trying to expand upon with great intrigue, always respectful of those that practice even if she does not necessarily agree with their views.
On matters more technical and complex she has fairly little knowledge. Magitek and other forms of engineering are not subjects which interest her much more than manners deem polite. She has no head for numbers, though she does harbor an inherent skill with languages and symbols. History, anthropology, religion, and linguistics are definitely topics she enjoys discussing and learning more about.
So far as combat and immediate strategy, Styrnbera is an incredibly capable fighter partially because of her great understanding of anatomy as well as her more basic knowledge of aetheric manipulation. Much like the Fists of Rhalgr, her own enclave has endowed her with methods of recirculating aether in her own body as well as in those of others; crucial knowledge and techniques employed to aid her comrades in the battle against dark magic as well as to heighten her capabilities to face the threat directly. There are some minor methods of infusing others with vitality at a short distance and even minor feats of succor though all her skills seem to revolve around closing the distance between herself and a ranged opponent and defeating them efficiently. Her knowledge of all weapons and fighting styles is fairly rudimentary, something she actively seeks to learn more about during her journey.

Religion: A priestess of Nald and a follower of Menphina, Styrnbera's religious beliefs may seem as though they would be as conflicting as the fire and ice of both patron deities. In reality, her dualistic worship has served to temper her, offering more insight into the divine than focusing on the tenets of a single member of the Twelve. Much of her gentleness and efforts at altruism come from her beliefs regarding Menphina. These also heavily influence her views on romance in general.
Her worship of Nald more conservative and disciplined than her free worship of the Lover. As a member of the Eyriansa Enclave, she has been brought up on the belief that death reaches all, even the immortals. For those who aspire to immortality with evil in their hearts death must be delivered at the hands of Nald's followers. Necromancy is a capital sin beyond all else, the horrors of which her enclave seeks to hunt down and exterminate. This calling is prioritized above love, self-preservation, and even family though the tenets of her order do not require abstaining from any of those otherwise.
Those of Nald are free to live and love for up to two epochs and are encouraged to experience all that there is in life (in moderation) before they are expected to return to their home in Alabathia's Spine to deliver the records of all they have encountered in the outside world. Every priest and priestess has undertaken these pilgrimages and these are often the times that children like Styrnbera are conceived before being returned to the enclave at the end of the parent's venture.
Death is not to be feared, nor is it to be prematurely sought out. Taking one's own life for any reason save for the preservation of innocents is a choice others are free to make and respected by the devout of Nald; though taking one's own life within the order is seen as disrespecting their patron. Life is a journey to death in their mind, something to be suffered through or enjoyed for all that it has to offer. Depending on how an individual chooses to live that life, the eternity to follow may be proportionally beautiful or nightmarish.

Romance: Simply put, Styrnbera has never been involved romantically with any individual. She has a great wealth of philosophies regarding romance that is mostly that-- philosophies. She believes that love, familial or otherwise, is a source of great power and an energy unto itself. She believes any person can love any other, but not that fate has prescribed whom those people may be. The genders of those involved, races, and the number of partners are not important, in her mind, at least not so much so as love itself. She bears no prejudices against any form of mutual love and will readily fight anyone who oppresses another with their beliefs.
So far as her own love goes, however, she remains rather open-minded. While she has yet to find any physical attraction to individuals who share her gender, she does not believe herself incapable of romantic feelings towards them. Similarly, she is not necessarily averse to a relationship with anyone of a different race or age, whether slightly younger or much older than herself. The Hellsguard finds strong, quiet men visually appealing, though those interests have never led to anything more than short-term admiration. Similarly, she admires much older individuals with good humor and a wealth of wisdom. In essence, she remains open-minded and unattached, if somewhat dense towards romantic advances. Intelligent individuals will eventually realize that in order to court her, they will have to be very direct in order to make her aware of their interest in the first place.
The priestess has no restrictions on any relationship, so far as religious ties may go, save that she will have to return to the enclave at the end of her first or second epoch. Though some others in her community have returned with their spouses, this situation is rather rare. Many, like her mother, merely returned with their children and spent the rest of their lives within their closed society with no apparent consideration for the spouses they left behind. This requirement is merely a matter that a potential suitor would have to come to terms with, but one that she would be forthright in regards to. For the time being, she is satisfied with exploring the world and living up to her cause with no harrowing concerns about romance or marriage to burden her.

Relationships

Family

Sylbrael Solkwydawyn [Mother] - Silver Doe, daughter of Solkwydawyn is the only living member of Styrnbera's immediate family that she is familiar with. Though young for her position, she serves on the council of elders for the Eyriansa (Wandering Scythe) Enclave. She is a pious woman, devoted to the Twelve and Nald above all. Unlike her daughter, she is stoic by nature, but compassionate at heart, having given over an epoch of her life to her previous husband and the father of her beloved child. A supportive and wise woman, she continues to support her community both as a protector and a spiritual adviser. Whether or not she harbors some guilt over the abandonment of her spouse is unknown. While others excel in matters of succor or use of the axe for their holy work, Sylbrael descends from a long line of blademasters who employ little more than long daggers and their own bodies in their pursuit of evil. While she is nowhere near so slight at her daughter, the elder priestess was a skilled void-sent huntress in her day, swift and silent despite her size, and is reputed to have tracked down and eliminated over fifty targets on behalf of the Eyriansa. Her frigid efficiency at fulfilling such tasks has done nothing to diminish her bottomless wealth of empathy for others. Much of her daughter's beliefs are built upon the foundation Sylbrael has provided her through example. Though the rest of the Enclave remains neutral in their concerns regarding the rest of the continent and the plight of the city-states, believing their cause to be separate and above that of such matters, Sylbrael is one of few who continues to argue that the fate of the realm is, in fact, a concern of Nald as well as His devoted.
Iyrnhimal Dhemhaemrsyn [Father] - Iron Sky, son of Dhemhaemrsyn was a Hellsguard mercenary whom Sylbrael encountered by chance in Thanalan when he rallied to her aid unexpectedly. Having saved her life in the process of dispatching a notorious void-sent, Iyrnhimal asked nothing of Sylbrael and meant only to send her on her way. In response, she virtually demanded to repay him with an epoch of companionship during his endeavors as a mercenary. Reluctant at first, the older Hellsguard finally succumbed to her stubbornness and agreed to travel with her until one or the other grew tired of the company. Gruff and self-serving to start, the sellsword became enamored with the perpetual calm and at times infuriatingly gracious demeanor of Sylbrael. In time, Iyrnhimal discarded his mantle of mercenary in favor of the more charitable work as an adventurer, allowing his new comrade to guide him on a path towards redemption. Mutual love blossomed and the two were handfasted for one cycle prior to their official wedding. For the rest of their time together, he became a proud father and a man of great faith, finally settling down in Western Thanalan in a humble home for his family. His love for his young daughter was fierce, though when she was only five years old and at the end of his proffered period with Sylbrael, he was horrified to discover both his wife and child missing upon returning home one evening. The priestess' note of fondness and salutations did nothing to lessen his heartbreak and the years to follow were spent searching the city-states for his family. The current whereabouts of Iron Sky are unknown, though it is rumored he has returned to dwell somewhere in Thanalan, venturing daily to the prayerstone of Nald to plead for the return of his beloved.
Eyriansa Enclave [Community] - A relatively small group of Hellsguard that has numbered over no more than two thousand members at the height of its time and currently lingers around a meager two hundred. An offshoot of the major clan itself, this pious community largely follows the ancient beliefs of the old Hellsguard who once and still do protect the gates of Hell, barring any entry by the living and any exit by the dead. The order was named after the legendary Roegadyn Eyriansa who ventured into the world from her post at Alabathia's Spine; the first in her family to shirk her holy duties. Upon her return, she spoke of the evils that existed far beyond the Spine, rallying a number of her people to a new cause: not only to ward the gates of Hell but to cull the evil beyond their boundaries in their service to Nald. Thus, the Wandering Scythes came to be, a religious order who have spent centuries refining their respective skills in combating entities of great evil. While many lines still employ the trademark weapon of the Hellsguard, the great axe, several styles of martial arts have been adapted from texts taken from other nations such as Ala Mhigo over the eras and converted to the nigh exclusive mission of eliminating magic-oriented targets. Likewise, they have adapted their own version of worship and religion, every member of the Enclave expected to take on the teachings of Eyriansa who preached that protecting the world from evil meant spiritual attunement, devotion, and physical discipline. As children they begin learning passages from ancient scripts of Nald, capable of performing cleansing, holy rites, and rituals by adulthood. The Enclave's ranks have thinned between the martyrs who have left on their pilgrimages, having found their end during their holy work, and their otherwise reclusive nature not conducive to recruiting new initiates, but the community continues much as it has and will undoubtedly continue for some many cycles to come.

Descoteaux Baudoin - A Duskwight adventurer who first discovered the Hellsguard woman freezing to death in a snowdrift near his recently departed home. After rescuing her from the elements he has since taken her under his wing, bringing her along on his journey to the allied City-States. His haughty, somewhat distant demeanor belies an unusually romantic heart, the seemingly frigid man as warm a soul as his comrade just beneath the surface. His wealth of patience in regards to the Roegadyn seems bottomless as he suffers all her most irritating traits, such as her issue with navigation and penchant for falling asleep at the least opportune times, with little more than a fond smile. Star Berry is protective of him and follows his direction with endless enthusiasm, almost always on his heels as they continue their ventures through the lands yet foreign to them both.
