General Information
A drifter with strong moral convictions, Thilo has dedicated most of his life to make a miserable world more bearable for its people. His outspoken views on fairness and penchant for vigilantism have caused him a measure of trouble, but he regrets nothing he's done in the name of the greater good.

Hair & Eyes
His hair and beard tend to be just a little longer than what would normally be considered trimmed, the latter moreso. He often lets his hair grow long enough to tuck it behind his ears and, when it grows any longer than that, he has it shortened again. Consequently, he doesn't visit the barber often, granting his hairstyle a casual aesthetic.
Physique & Markings
His clavicles are wide and his hips are of medium girth, giving his body a less pronounced V-shape. His limbs and especially his joints are thick, being descended from generations of people more suited to hiking through mountains than running on plains.
Hygiene & Attire
His hygiene is impeccable, and he becomes silently judgmental of people whose teeth and fingernails appear unkempt. Although his choice in clothing often appears plain and subdued, his clothes are always pressed and clean; even when spending a day alone in an inn room without planning to go out, he still gets fully dressed in the morning. Although he'd never think less of a person who couldn't afford to dress to impress, he most certainly does think negatively of people who don't attempt to at least wash their clothes regularly.
Personality
Psychological Profile
Thilo's optimism was produced, in part, by a form of privilage which isn't outwardly apparent. He grew up without many material comforts and his family aren't Thanalanian nobility, yet he had a stable and loving family and parents who instilled a strong sense of moral values. This background has driven his sense of social justice on the one hand, but it has also granted him an almost naive belief in the power of people to choose their own fates on the other hand. A person without the supportive family background may not find any reason to share his belief in the ability to influence one's own future.
Voice
His voice is his most unfortunate feature. The bass tone and methodical diction gives strangers the impression of menace and even standoffishness, neither of which describe him accurately. He must work to convince unfamiliar people that he isn't upset or distrusting of them due to his almost villainous tone, though his voice does come in handy when encountering less-than-friendly people.
Philosophy & Mannerisms
He's an anti-Nihilist: he agrees with the Nihilist's view of the world as essentially cruel, petty, and without meaning, but he disagrees with the Nihilist's cynicism. He still believes in heroes, and his reaction to a universe which he views as uncaring is to create his own meaning, find beauty amid ugliness. He doesn't adhere to his moral code because he thinks he can change the world; he adheres to it because he believes in doing what's right even when it's difficult to do so.

OOC Note
I don't do dice-rolling. I'm a longtime player of D&D, Warhammer, and other tabletop games; I love them, but number-crunching is NOT roleplaying. If you want to roll dice with me, I'm down to do that in another setting. For FFXIV-based RP, let's weave tales, write plausible descriptions, and determine likely outcomes based on plot devices and story structure.

History
.
Disclaimer: .
Sixth Astral Era
Childhood
The Falkner family was typical for skilled workers in Thanalan, enjoying financial security though not true wealth. Thilo was fortunate enough to have an upbringing which instilled a strong work ethic and sense of fairness, principles which guided his entire life's trajectory. He joined the Immortal Flames as a young man, going on to fight - and survive - the Battle of Carteneau.

Seventh Umbral Era
Adulthood
All Thilo remembers of Carteneau's climax was waking up injured in a burning field of bodies; like his fellow survivors who all helped each other crawl to safety, he couldn't recall how exactly the battle had ended. Over the next five years, he tried to live a normal life. He witnessed death (his sister, his best friend) and birth (his nephews, his neices). He even got married, then divorced, then briefly engaged to another potential match before things fell apart. Eventually, the life of adventure called him to pick up his sword again, especially when conflict with the Garlean Empire and the Beast Tribes heated up.

In Recent Times
Moving Forward
Thilo's quest never ended, taking him along the path shared by other adventurers to safeguard Hydaelyn's future. Not only primals and Imperials and the Dravanian Horde, but even the generality of the powerful oppressing the people became targets. His visits home to Ul'dah became less frequent, to the point that the road became his home and, at times, the ground became his bed.

Family

✔ Wilhelm Falkner (father): An ageing falconer and immigrant to Thanalan, his father is semi-retired in Vesper Bay. The old man is three-quarters Highlander and one-quarter Doman Midlander, rendering Thilo one-eighth Doman.
✔ Emma Falkner-Schimmel (mother): An ageing falconer and immigrant to Thanalan, his mother is semi-retired in Vesper Bay. She's of purely Highlander background, rendering Thilo seven-eighths Highlander.
✔ Marie Lang-Falkner (sister): The youngest of the siblings, his sister married a poor man employed by their parents. That, coupled with her status as youngest, has resulted in her living in Vesper Bay to manage the family business and care for their parents.
● Conrad Falkner (brother:) Thilo's older brother married a woman from Falkner family business partners, though his less-than-responsible behavior causes many of his decisions to be overruled. He has two kids.
✔ Wilma Schroeder-Falkner (aunt): His only aunt lives in Ul'dah and functions as a caretaker for Thilo's apartment there due to his long absences. She's a stable person but keeps her head down and avoids the city-state's ruling families.
✔ Eric Schroeder (cousin): Thilo's older cousin is a schoolteacher in a crowded Ul'dah neighborhood. He's married with one kid.
● Helen Schroeder (cousin): Thilo's younger cousin is still juvenile and competes with his brother for the title of worst decisionmaker in the family.

Acquaintances
Former Acquaintances

✖ Maribel Fischer (ex-wife): An otherwise lovely lady whose relationship with Thilo broke down due to differences in communication style.

Deceased

✝ Sarah Falkner (sister): His older sister died from complications after being shot by an arrow during a bandit raid on a caravan.
✝ Egroux Paulat (mentor): The crotchety Dark Knight who accepted Thilo as an apprentice and passed on knowledge of the job. He viewed Thilo as an adopted son of sorts.

Rumors
NPC Rumors

Some of these rumors are untrue, speculation, or are greatly exaggerated.

◢ Common Rumors - Easily overheard. Use these freely!
"Falkner? His mouth has gotten him into trouble with ruling families more than once. He never learns." — Anonymous Ul'dah innkeeper.
"He walks the talk; he's stood up for people like us when noone else would more than once." — Anonymous innkeeper's underpaid employee.
◢ Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear. Use sparingly or ask first!
"Another Dark Knight who thinks he'll save the world, though at least he's not some edgelord. His ideals are as inspiring as they are misguided." — Ishgard busker.
"There's no shortage of people trying to play hero, though he doesn't seem to be doing it for personal glory. I found it to be a breath of fresh air." — Roadside mercenary outside Doma.
◢ Rare Rumors - Very rarely overheard. Please ask before using!
"We met in jail. I'd stolen a loaf of bread; he'd publicly accused the sheriff of collusion with the baker over price gouging. He's never told me this, but I've heard it wasn't the first time he'd run afoul for such behavior." — One of Thilo's retainers.
"Armed and dangerous; bounty only valid if brought in dead. An increasing number of platoon commanders report drops in troop morale when encountering the bastard." — Garlean wanted poster with Thilo's face on it.

Affiliations
Most of these aren’t public, and would have to be asked after!
Immortal Flames: He's no longer a member, though records of his past service still exist in Ul'dah.
IC Inventory
The following items are things which Thilo carries on his person at all times. These are noted for pickpockets, and those watching her closely. This information is meant to be a prompt for insight and is not to be meta-gamed, though feel free to use this information if it comes up logically in RP (pickpocketing, a search, etc) with use of a simple /tell.

Glio coinpurse.png

Coinpurse: A simple coin purse made of soft leather, containing a few hundred gil.
Map canister: A fine leather cylinder containing various maps relevant to wherever he may be at the time.
RP Limits
I like to consider myself a flexible player who is willing to commit to a number of different types of scenes and role-play scenarios, but even I have my limits. If something is on the play list, assume it means yes, as long as it's within the context of the current play or ongoing plot. No's are typically a hard no, and it means don't ask.
I will play moderately violent themes, innuendo, or anything else rated PG-13.
Ask about injuries, imprisonment, stranding, substance abuse, or personal insults.
I won't play ERP, perma-death, perma-injury, meta-gaming, or god-moding.
RP Hooks
While the below is by no means comprehensive, it's a kind of spring board for walk-up RP. Longer plots that are meant to run for more than a few quick RP's, please feel free to send me a tell so we can work out a good reason for our characters to get to know one another. I'm always looking for RP, unless I'm actively spamming PvE content.
■ Carteneau survivors: if your character(s) survived the Battle of Carteneau, then they and Thilo may have helped each other crawl to safety in the aftermath.
■ Wandering heroes: if your character(s) travel wherever the fight for justice (and the story quests) take them, then they may cross paths with Thilo.
■ Animal lover: if your character(s) also have an affinity for animals, whether that be watching or riding them, then they might encounter Thilo at stables or in the wilds.

Feel free to use Common or Uncommon rumors freely; if you want to use a Rare Rumor as a plot hook or to spark RP, I would ask that you contact me first to make certain it's alright.
Character Lore Adherence
Everything concerning this character that has not been confirmed by in-game lore should be taken with a grain of salt. Anything that has had to be changed because of lore shifting will be noted below.
■ No changes.
Important Note for RP Partners
I'm not looking for romance. I've accidentally upset RP partners in other games by failing to make this clear up front, so let me be clear now. If my character is nice to yours, please don't understand his behavior as anything else other than being a decent human being. By all means, be yourself; if your character is a gregarious flirt, then don't censor yourself. Just be prepared for an IC rebuff and remember that Thilo is off the market, so to speak.

Tropes & Explanations
A trope is a convention or device that is often found in creative works. In this case, the tropes below describe my character either in part, or as a whole. Their background, personality, appearance, etc, most of them can be described in the tropes below.
 ■ Pragmatic Hero Thilo possesses more realism than an ideal hero, though he lacks the cynicism of a more unscrupulous one.
Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right! While he wouldn't skirt the law just to make a point, he strongly believes that what's legal and what's right may be two different things.
Cynicism is For Losers Thilo does not respect cynicism. He's suffered as much as many other adventurers in Eorzea; he just doesn't talk about it to strangers. Despite all the hardships, he loves life, and he believes that the world's beauty outweighs its ugliness if only people let themselves see it.
