Appearance
Apart from his face and neck, Trachius has the body of your average career soldier or adventurer. Scars are scattered across his body, with particular concentrations of straight scarring on his right arm compared to his left (indicating a fighting style involving the right placed at more risk than the left). Build wise, he stands at 180cm - small by comparison to Eorzean Highlanders. Despite this, he's solidly built - slightly barrel chested, broad shouldered and well muscled. The sort of build that would make a good rugby front player - probably a prop.
And then there's his face, and neck. Or what's left of it, anyway. At some point, he appears to have run afoul of a lot of fire. From cheekbones down, his face is a ropy pass of pink, shiny, melted looking scar tissue. This spreads along both cheeks to include his ears, as well as down his neck to just below his collar bone. The tip of his nose has also been lost as soft tissue damage. A large, puckered scar runs from his hairline above his left temple, ripping a path down to the bottom of his left jaw - leaving a hole in his cheek on the way. From the shape of the face around the scar, it looks like whatever made the scar also caused significant damage to the underlying bone structure.
Personality
War is not a kind place for those that would otherwise become kind men. Generally calm and collected, Trachius is not one to hold a grudge, although he is quick to judge based on perceived behavioural patterns. Soft spoken, although not entirely by choice, he rarely (if ever) swears.
He cares deeply for, and is excessively loyal to, anyone he feels falls under the umbrella of "squad". Comrades, those he is responsible for, those he cares for.
Despite this, he is still a trained soldier, and able to kill (almost) without remorse if himself or squad are threatened. This includes preemptive strikes.

Mannerisms
Due to the damage to his vocal tract, Trachius has a somewhat unusual speech pattern. Where possible, he will drop as many words from a sentence as is possible while still being able to communicate - occasionally dropping too many words, especially when making complex comparisons. He physically struggles to manage more than a few words together closely, and pauses longer than is normal at the end of sentences (or in the middle of long ones) to 'readjust' his cheek before it interferes with his diction.
To counteract this somewhat, his actual words are spoken slightly slower than usual with extra care paid to the diction. It may seem like he has a slightly strange, unplaceable accent at times - but that is mostly due to him avoiding and substituting certain 'sound shapes' that are problematic to him.
The most obvious response to all this is, however, an avoidance of talking where possible when non-verbal communication is sufficient to get the point across, or a mixing of non-verbal and minimum verbal clarifications.
