General Information
Born and raised in Garlemald as a part of experimentation on the Echo. Had a normal childhood until she awakened the Echo, and began to participate in the research program. Worked primarily as a interrogator, retrieving intel from the memories of war prisoners, but the first-person perspective of those memories conflicted with the education she received. Began to question the legitimacy of these wars and her own actions. Was saved by Gridanian forces after the Seventh Calamity and stayed in Gridania for several years, before leaving for home again when she hears news of the Civil War.

Personality
Psychological Profile
Survivor’s guilt and hyper-vigilance from witnessing, and at times being complicit in, violence and opression. Emotionally guarded. Beneath her calm, commanding exterior lie doubts and self-hatred.
Voice
Low, measured, and deliberate, conveys authority without aggression. There’s a subtle, unwavering calm in her speech that can be intimidating. She rarely raises her voice except when issuing commands or expressing urgent warnings. She makes dry humor jokes sometimes.
Philosophy & Mannerisms
Amenable to coaxing but not coercion. Serious and deliberate, she always follows through on her words, and considers maintaining eye contact the most basic form of respect—something she unconsciously expects from those around her as well. She often takes pleasantries literally.
Since leaving the Empire’s military, she has relaxed somewhat, but if her identity were exposed, she would immediately tense up.
Preferences
Likes
Efficiency, the landscapes of Eorzea, the Garlean Empire.

"Nos sumus manus, Nos sumus deus." — Our hands are miracles; we ourselves are gods. Faced with countless invasions and driven to harsh lands, Garlemald unified nearly three continents within fifty years under Solus. Even now, she still loves her homeland. She grew up surrounded by the steel-black architecture and relentless, unforgiving snow of her homeland. The harshness of the environment and the Empire’s rigid expectations left little room for weakness or imperfection. She is fascinated by Eorzea's vibrant landscapes, the flora, and the freedom its people had to show vulnerability.

Dislikes
Eikons/Primals (including the Twelve), elementals, disrupted plans, Doma, the Garlean Empire.

In the Empire, progress is valued as the sole measure of worth. Ambitious individuals drive Garlemald forward, but this produces a cruel class system that treats annexed peoples unequally and shows no mercy to the weak. She has deep disappointment in her homeland.
She also thinks of Doma as a decayed land. People gossip in secret but take no action, praying only that disaster will not touch them. A few “heroes” cling to a meaningless code of Bushido, while the populace waits for a savior. Not taking fate into one’s own hands—how cowardly, how pitiful.

Combat, Abilities & Weaponry

The Echo
Yanagi’s Echo connects her to the souls of others, letting her traverse memories and witness events as they truly occurred.

Through years of deliberate training, she has learned to trigger the Echo at will and endure the headache that comes with it to conceal its activation. This control allows her to gather information, anticipate threats, and better understand the motives of those around her.
She can interact subtly with the environment of those memories, but she cannot alter outcomes, and she cannot pinpoint what exact memories to view.
The Echo also grants her an intuitive understanding of thoughts and languages, even if the words themselves are foreign.

Weapon Training
Main: Reaper
Other combat jobs: Lancer, Imperial Gunbreaker
Crafting: Weaver, Carpenter
Gathering: Botanist
Non-Combat Abilities
Botany & Weaving: While living in Gridania, Yanagi learned to cultivate plants and identify edible flora. During the Final Days, she used this knowledge to grow small plots in salvaged containers, sustaining herself and others. She also utilized Garlean fibers and remnants of insulation material to repaired clothing and craft protective layers against the cold.
Combat Abilities
Imperial Gunblade/Lance/Scythe: As a soldier, she was first trained in field medicine, healing spells that her pureblood counterparts cannot use, and an imperial gunblade. During the Seventh Umbral Calamity, she was rescued by Ywain of the Lancers’ Guild, and found mentorship under him. She honed her skills with the lance while serving as a Wood Wailer for a few years. After leaving Gridania, she sought out the Lemures and learned about the traditional Garlean Reaper’s art from her countrywoman, taking up the scythe — a weapon that resonated more deeply with her than any she had wielded before. The lance training eased her transition, and the scythe quickly became an extension of herself, its edge carrying the weight of her guilt and rage. The voidsent with which she formed a pact manifests as a towering, faceless, half-formed figure shrouded in a black, weathered cloak. The entity’s soul is uniquely compatible with hers—so much so that it may be her own shard from the Thirteenth World.
OOC Note
Her Echo is pretty standard. Nothing crazy like the WoL literally fighting in someone else's body. The imperial gunblade refers to the type of gunblade wielded by Gaius and Varis, different from the gunblades used by the playable Gunbreaker job. Despite using a melee-focused weapon, she also employs healing abilities, similar to NPCs who possess unique job variants that allow them to heal.

The World Unsundered
Etheirys
Her soul, when it was whole, once belonged to Leuce, an ancient who was a normal citizen of Amaurot. When Leuce was still a student at Akadaemia Anyder practicing creation magicks, their senior thesis and project was the creation of what is now known today as Branchbearer. This species resemble a flightless bird, but is in fact a mobile seedkin -- plants capable of controlled movement for hunting, defense, or reproduction, often mimicking harmless flora to ambush prey.
After graduation, Leuce would go on to lead the Hall of Rhetoric, a place devoted to debate and discourse. There, they dedicated their practically immortal lifespan to the creation and preservation of insightful ideas.
The Amaurotine perished during the Sundering, spending their final moments quietly beneath a tree with two close friends.

Rumors
NPC Rumors

Some of these rumors are untrue, speculation, or are greatly exaggerated.

◢ Common Rumors - Easily overheard. Use these freely!
"She’s usually all business, but the day some critter snatched her hat mid-patrol, an’ she chased it all t’way across the village? Hah! You should’a seen it yourself." — Local Farmkeep.
"Can’t deny she’s earned her place. I admit I was skeptical when the guildmaster took her in... Honestly, I still don’t get why the Elder Seedseer saved enemey soldiers. But he must’ve seen somethin' in her. She trains like she’s got somethin’ to prove. Never seen anyone so hard on themselves." — Seasoned Lancer.
"Guildmaster Ywain’s gone soft. First he brings in an Imperial, now he calls her a student? You can take the woman out of Garlemald, but you can’t take Garlemald out of the woman. Cold eyes, colder heart. She’ll always be one of them. Just wait till she turns that weapon on us." — Suspicious Wood Wailer.
◢ Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear. Use sparingly or ask first!
"Heads always turned when her name was called in class. Not because she was bad… just because Yanagi wasn’t like the rest of us. Her third eye aren’t like ours either, but I’d say it’s just color. It doesn’t make her any different — though people don’t always see it that way." — Magitek Engineer.
"Keep your distance. They say she can hear your thoughts before you even speak." — Imperial Deserter.
"She never makes us do stuff she wouldn’t do herself. She will head in and check for the monsters before we do! That’s why I’d follow her anywhere. I don’t care who she is, or what she was before. None of that matters now!" — Young Survivor.
◢ Rare Rumors - Very rarely overheard. Please ask before using!
"Half-blood and half-savage, if you ask me. The Empire calls her ‘useful’, something about harnessing the ‘beastman’s curse’ for Imperial use. Makes my skin crawl just thinking about it. If she really has that Echo thing, she’s a monster same as the rest." — Veteran Soldier.
"Why is the father arguing about her schedule again? He signed the forms. Took in some foreign woman to breed a weapon, not a daughter, and somehow thought he’d raise a child instead. Ridiculous, for a man of his station." — Senior Scientist.
"The Empire says those with the Echo are beasts. Yet we are carving open one of our own to steal its power. Tell me again who the beasts are." — Disillusioned researcher.
"She carried one man all the way back to camp, but he didn’t make it. None of them did. We buried eight of our own after that ceruleum explosion… and one soldier who wasn’t even with us. She acted calm the whole time, giving orders to make sure the rest of us stayed organized and safe, checking supplies, assigning watch shifts, keeping the group moving… but we all knew. I could see it in the way she stared at the snow when she thought no one was looking." — Armed Civilian

RP Info

Location & Probability
Places where the character is very likely to be seen

Gridania: (BEFORE A Requiem For Heroes) Patroling, living life, gardening.
Other city states: (AFTER A Requiem For Heroes) Adventuring.
Ul'dah, Limsa: (DURING Shadowbringers) Passing by during the journey back home.
Garlemald: (Endwalker and beyond) Surviving and rebuilding.

Affiliations
Some of these aren’t public. She doesn't bring up her history as a soldier to Eorzeans, and she doesn't talk about her past to the Garlean civilians she is leading now.

Garlean Military (Former) Joined as a teenager ever since her Echo awakened. Works as a medic (that's where the middle name comes from) since she can use magic unlike her pureblood peers, and as an interogattor.
The Wood Wailers (Former) Joined after the Battle of Carteneau.
The Lemures (on friendly terms) Asked for help after hearing news about the civil war. It would be hard for one single person to travel all the way to Isabard, after all. But the lemures seem to maintain communications with the mother land.
Unnamed survivors' camp (Current) Leader. Created after she returned to Garlemald.

IC Inventory
The following items are things that this individual carries on their person at all times. These are noted for pickpockets, and those watching her closely. This information is meant to be a prompt for insight and is not to be meta-gamed, though feel free to use this information if it comes up logically in RP (pickpocketing, a search, etc) with use of a simple /tell.

Glio coinpurse.png

Coinpurse: A simple coin purse made of soft leather, containing a few hundred gil.
Scythe: her primary weapon, battle-worn and personalized with cloth wrapping on the handle.
A small photograph of her father and herself: edges worn, corners burned.
A dog tag: her own, officially marked “Missing in action” five years ago.
Compass & torn map of the Capitol area: Safe zones, danger zones, places that have already been stripped bare, and places that might still hold supplies. She keeps updates by hand with charcoal markings.
Rations: Dried meat or nutrient bars. She portions carefully.
Imperial gunblade: For tanking.
Book: For healing.

RP Limits
I like to consider myself a flexible player who is willing to commit to a number of different types of scenes and role-play scenarios, but even I have my limits. If something is on the play list, assume it means yes, as long as it's within the context of the current play or ongoing plot. No's are typically a hard no, and it means don't ask.
I will play adventures.
Ask about meeting as a part of backstory.
I won't play erp.
RP Hooks
While the below is by no means comprehensive, it's a kind of spring board for walk-up RP. Longer plots that are meant to run for more than a few quick RP's, please feel free to send me a tell so we can work out a good reason for our characters to get to know one another. I'm always looking for RP, unless I'm actively spamming PvE content.

■ Though she tries to hide the fact that she possess the Echo, the awareness that she would not be tempered would compel her to intervene if a Primal truly appears nearby. Let's do daily roulettes together, adventurer.

Player Information
Player Note
Thank you for reading. My in-game ID is not Yanagi, so I'm not even sure if anyone can find me, but feel free to leave comments in the discussion if you made it this far. If anything, I'm just using this as a nice way to keep track of the lore.
Character Lore Adherence
Everything concerning this character that has not been confirmed by in-game lore should be taken with a grain of salt. Anything that has had to be changed because of lore shifting will be noted below.
■ As of the Sorrow of Werlyt storyline, my character now has a third eye black in color, rather than none at all. The lore seem to go back and forth on this, but I'm privioritzing the in-game model of a half-Garlean.
Character Concept
This character was originally created because I thought it would be far TOO impressive for Garlemald to have succeeded in creating artificial Echo in such a short time by studying only one sample: Krile. That's just not enough sample size and not good science XD. I suspect they post notices seeking individuals that possess the Echo after every successful conquest. I also thought it would be interesting if someone with the Echo was on the Empire's side.
Since no pure-blooded Garlean has ever demonstrated having the Echo, it raises doubts about whether the race can awaken it at all (we still don't know whether pure-blood Garleans were created as some sort of Allagan experiment back in the days). There is an example of a half-Garlean naturally possessing the Echo though. Therefore, I made my character a half-blood. The implication is that her mother also possessed the Echo and was betrayed by her hometown in Doma when the Empire came knocking.

Tropes & Explanations
A trope is a convention or device that is often found in creative works. In this case, the tropes below describe my character either in part, or as a whole. Their background, personality, appearance, etc, most of them can be described in the tropes below.
Trope Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés.
