Stories - Vincent watched, concealed by darkness behind a window, as a family sat around their dinner table conversing about what seemed to him as rather mundane stories. After all, what could compare to being chased down the street by old man cabbages? At least, that’s what he told himself. Deep down, like any other child he longed for a home and loving parents. Soon his vision refocuses from the warm scene of a family dinner to a closer image, a faint reflection of himself in the window. A boy, lonely and jealous, with wild red hair and blue-green eyes stared back at him. Wide eyed, Vincent takes a step back and melds back into the black of night. Vincent learned to find the little comforts in life. Though the night was dark and seemed to swallow everything else around him and leaving him alone, the vast expanse of twinkling crystals above shone to him like brilliant rays of hope…mysterious and beautiful. Smiling once again, Vincent silently makes his way back to the orphanage. Back to the wooden cot carved with the only tie he ever had to his true family: Sarkoza. Throughout his youth Vincent would occupy his time in a struggle to live above the poverty that seemed to flourish all around him. If he was hungry he would steal. If he needed gil he would steal. If he had to defend his belongings from the older kids or adults he would fight or run with what he could. Eventually the mutual struggle him and the other orphans shared together formed between them a bond, and for some a time things were good. Vincent didn’t mind when the other children were chosen to be adopted over him due to his ‘rowdiness’. To him, any time he could spend with the others was certainly better than having to adjust to a quiet life in a new home. The dream of having a home had long since departed, and Vincent began having new ambitions of setting out on his own. The tales of adventurers and warriors afar had lit the flame in his heart for what could be greater than fame? So he made his mind. Nothing else was on his mind as he made his way through Western Thanalan. He could only see himself whirling his great axe at numerous enemies and even slaying a primal or two like the warriors he had heard about in the stories of old. There was nothing else to live for, nothing else to strive for. With a bag of food and assorted clothing slung over his shoulder and a small dagger strapped to a leather belt, he would face the world...or so he thought. Nary three malms past Horizon Vincent’s vision was suddenly shrouded by darkness, and fate would throw his path across old man Mansa Musa. “What kind of kid travels alone? Don’t you know how dangerous that is?” the white bearded man asked as he untied Vincent’s bindings. “Well, you’re safe now. C’mon…” Mansa turned his back toward Vincent, taking one look over his shoulder at the angry kid who averted his gaze from his intimidating savior before he walked toward the mouth of the cave. Reluctantly, but seeing no better alternative, Vincent follows Mansa out of the cave. To Mansa’s dismay, Vincent continued to follow him after they had had gotten to a safer distance away from the traffickers’ encampment. The lifeless bodies of Vincent’s abductors had shown Vincent that this was perhaps the warrior he was looking for to train under. After all, there was nowhere else he could go. The precariousness of Vincent’s circumstance and Mansa’s own need of continuing a legacy would eventually bind their fates together, and one day seal Mansa’s own fate beneath a blooming Sakura tree.
Shinobi Heritage Show text Vincent inherited the history and teachings of the clan Gekko no Kage (Moonlight Shadow) through his master Mansa Musa, whom he also has taken the name of as an alias after his death. In history, the Gekko no Kage shinobi were few but powerful, as masters could only take on two apprentices. To ascend to the rank of master, and apprentice had to best his or her master. It was a trial that ended in the master's death and was a practice meant to preserve and perpetuate the "elite purity" of the clan. In some instances the master, who has spent countless hours honing the skill of his/her disciple, ends up killing the apprentice during the trial. Because the death of a master’s apprentice meant shame and dishonor, masters of Gekko no Kage chose their disciples wisely and trained them diligently. Disciples are chosen at a young age and training would continue until the trial was completed. However this practice proved unsustainable over time as conflict wore on, even though many of Gekko no Kage’s masters didn't strictly adhere to the code of inheritance. Some even took on more than two disciples to satisfy the demands of war, resulting in a number of junior ninjas. Continued conflict combined with the inefficiency of "elite purity" eventually caused the clan’s downfall, leaving Mansa Musa as the clan's sole surviving heir until he came across Vincent. At the height of his final trial Vincent reluctantly struck down Mansa, whom in his dying breath passes on the clan's final soul stone of many generations to Vincent.
