<SUMMARY>

There are few modern miqo’te so obviously traditional as Yuve’li Netahr. Even from afar, his Keeper heritage is obvious due to the warpaint streaked across his eyes. His pale complexion and paler hair seem out of place in the dry heat of the deserts, but his travels have led him to Ul’dah, and he has something he must do, no matter how much he doesn’t want to. There’s no hurry, he tells himself. He has time, he says. He doesn’t quite believe it.

There is so much unfamiliar to him, down in Southern Aldenard. The clusters of buildings unnerve him. He has never seen so many Hyur in his life, and the Lalafell are utterly foreign to him, looking like children yet far older than his own twenty years. He hadn’t known. He had taken one for a child, and now he is paying the price.

Swindled into debt, Yuve’li is out of options. His skills developed in the snowy forests of Eastern Coerthas are of little use in Ul’dah, and he knows not how to interpret the strange designs others call letters. With menial labor too undignified for a Keeper of the Moon, not to mention its insufficient reward, Yuve’li has been forced into a role he never expected, one his family never would have wanted for him: He is a Gladiator .

Yuve’li is out of his depth. He knows no one, knows nothing, and there’s no sign of the reason he came here in the first place. With his reluctant successes in the arena, he is drawing too much attention, which is counterproductive to his goals. He can’t risk lingering too long around the Thaumaturge’s Guild. Any questions he asks around get twisted in the wind and blow back to him as a rumor.

On nights when the sky is clear, Yuve’li can be found on some high perch inn the city, staring up at the moon. He watches intently, as if hoping for guidance, and though she comforts, Menphina does not answer.

<APPEARANCE>

Standing at 5 fulm 7 ilm, Yuve’li is on the taller side for a miqo’te, but he is by no means tall compared to other races. Even so, what he lacks in height, he still makes up for in presence—though not necessarily in the most positive of ways.

His hair is a bright grey, shining white under sunlight. At home, it was dull beneath the clouded sky, its color and his pallor of little more interest than the muddied snowbanks around him. Under the desert sun, their hue is striking. Of course, not all about him is pale – his large ears and long tail are tipped with black, a trait he proudly inherits from his honorable mother. Upon his forehead, he wears a black tear, right above and between his brows. It holds significance in his line of Keepers, but he knows no others in his line besides his own family. No one else thus far has realized its meaning.

Not even 20 years old, Yuve’li is still young, yet many confuse him for someone older. His seemingly stern demeanor gives him an air of maturity, and the scarlet war paint accents his features, giving him the impression of a glare. His hair, pulled back and tied with itself, is unconventional for city miqo’te of his age. Milder-mannered folk find him a little intimidating, even when he isn’t doing anything in particular. Timid individuals are quick to read aggression from him, even when there is none. His newfound reputation as a gladiator is doing him no favors.

He tries to carry himself with a steady dignity, but it’s obvious it’s an ill-fitting endeavor. Though his posture is upstanding at a glance, at closer look, there is always something off. He’s hunching in on himself just a tad, or his ears are flicked backwards just so, or his tail is skimming his thighs as he walks. When he sits, he tries to escape public eye, and he wraps up in himself even more, pulling a knee to his chest and hiding his mouth in his arms. If someone has reason to look closely enough, they’ll find his lips to be bitten and dry.

If one can look past the war paint and his unusual demeanor, they’ll see just how young Yuve’li really is. Without the paint, he looks his age naivety clear upon his face. Without the paint, the shadows beneath his eyes grow obvious. Without the façade, he’s really just a tired kid.

<PERSONALITY>

A frequent observer might notice that Yuve’li rarely smiles. Without knowing his circumstances, many are quick to assume that’s just the way he is. After all, he seems like he wants to be left alone, with the way he keeps to himself and so grave an expression. He seems a loner, through and through... which is unfortunate, because he is not.

Rather than irritable or stoic, Yuve’li is young, confused, and uncomfortable. He has never been to a major city, never met more than a handful of individuals from other races, and yet now he’s trying to live amongst the crowds and the cultures. He has a debt to pay off. He can’t just catch his food in the wilds. There are concepts called literacy and currency, of which he knows nothing. More than just uncomfortable, Yuve’li is anxious. He may even be a little afraid.

However, a true Keeper of the Moon does not succumb to fear, and so Yuve’li will persevere, even though absolutely everything, even this respectable Keeper demeanor, is utterly new to him.

In the end, Yuve’li was the youngest child of his family. His elder siblings all doted upon him. He’s used to familial closeness, lazy huddles around a fire, food literally thrown at his face. He’s used to praise for baby steps, gentle advice for his mistakes. He’s used to ruffled hair and light-hearted mockery. He had never been alone for a day in his life.

But that’s all gone now, so it’s time for him to grow up.

Likes

High places - Since childhood, he would climb to the highest perch he could find. It provides both privacy and a sense of freedom.

Dislikes

Crowds – They have too much noise and too many people.
Isolation – He’s never spent a day alone in his life, but now...

Strengths

Cold Resistance – He grew up in Coerthas post-change; a little cold is nothing to him.
Observant – He was born naturally keen, and he developed those skills further. Noticing the small details is key to survival.

Weaknesses

Heat Intolerance - As someone who lived with snow all his life, the desert isn’t doing wonders.
Illiterate - Of the many skills his mother passed down to him, reading was not one of them.

<CURRENT EVENTS>

At the moment, Yuve’li is still new to Ul’dah and just trying to stay afloat. He’s trying to pay off a debt with an interest that grows day by day and just make sure he has his next meal. All the while, he’s warily observing the Thaumaturge’s Guild, looking for potential answers.

<BACKSTORY>

The Netahr family was, for a long time, an unconventional one. For reasons she never disclosed to her youngest child, Yuve Netahr lived in isolation, choosing to raise her children alone and without the company of other women. They lived across the White Maiden, in Eastern Coerthas, where snows were thick. Survival was hard-earned, but Yuve’li and his siblings were born into the work, and so the efforts were natural to them. They depended on one another to survive the colds, and even though each of the children were born of a different father, they were all a very close family.

Though it may not seem so now, Yuve’li was the baby of his family. The youngest of four children, he was doted upon in childhood, free of heavy expectations. He loved each of his older siblings dearly, from the compassionate eldest to the acerbic second to his jubilant older sister. When Yuve’li was not yet a teen and his eldest brother finally took off to fulfill his traditional duty as a Keeper male, Yuve’li cried in his absence. Even this was endearing to his siblings and – more importantly – his mother, as traditional a matriarch as she was.

Aside from the eldest’s expected departure and the harsh weathers of Coerthas, Yuve’li had an idyllic childhood. He played with his siblings, learned how to hunt, and on rare occasion, accompanied his mother to watch her trade the furs he skinned for other goods. Before his travels, these were the only times Yuve’li met others outside his family, and even then they were primarly yur and other Keepers.

Spoiler notice: The following contains spoiler information. Proceed at your own risk.

One day, when he was 17 years of age, Yuve’li and his older sister went out hunting, only to be approached by a tall stranger. Clad in black, with face obscured, all Yuve’li remembers is how the stranger loomed over them and the strong fragrance of some flower he doesn’t know. With the cryptic message that he could blame his father for what happens next, the stranger attacked with intent to kill.

Yuve’li, who had never experienced killing intent in his life, was caught completely off guard. Though his sister was barely two years older, she engaged with the stranger to protect him. She said that she would buy him time, that he should run for help.

And though he would regret it for the rest of his life, Yuve’li ran. He ran back home, calling his mother and brother for aid, that his sister, that Tohn was going to be killed. By the time he led them back, however, it was too late. The stranger was nowhere to be found, leaving only bloodstains in the snow. His sister’s corpse was on fire.

The eldest brother could not be contacted and was not present for the funeral.

Spoilers end here.
