A small soft-spoken individual. Zutsutsu would normally go unnoticed if not for a few of her odder quirks. She has a penchant for staring, and always speaks of herself in the third person. She is often followed by an automaton designed to mimic a tonberry.
The astute among you may have noticed that Zutsutsu's name is made up of unconventional phonemes for a Dunesfolk. It is not known what Zutsutsu's real name was. She did not gain her current name until the unfortunate events that befell her early in life.

Appearance & Personality

Natural black hair with a very subtle purple highlight frames her normally stoic face. Her eyes are vibrant, almost electric green in hue. Her skin is a dusky color, appearing black, grey, or brown depending on the lighting.
Zutsutsu is much heavier than she appears. While most Lalafell her size would average 25-35 Ponze, she scales in at nearly 50 Ponze. She does not appear overweight, or particularly muscular. The last person to give her a medical examination found no discernible explanation for this strange discrepancy.
Normally hidden beneath her hair, she has a surgical scar at the base of her skull which is accompanied by a slight protrusion. The area near this protrusion always emanates a warmth slightly higher than the surrounding tissue. Someone adept at reading aetherflow would notice a strange 'leak' at this point.
For whatever reason the Lalafell sees the world differently than others. She often relates things in odd ways that don't make sense to average people. This either causes her to be viewed as eccentric, or in the worst cases of below average intelligence. While most of the time she may seem mentally inhibited, she does have moments of insight which indicate that deeper understanding is present. She often relates things to colors, and may suffer from various forms of synesthesia.
Those that know Zutsutsu well come to understand that she has little concept of morals, often acting unfettered towards some higher goal. She does not intentionally harm others, but won't feel bad about doing so if it gets in the way of something she cares about. Because of these qualities she makes a very dependable and loyal friend; a friend who is willing to do things others shy away from.
Zutsutsu's social relations are driven by athazagoraphobia; specifically the fear of forgetting. She often seeks out particular things that will remind her about facets of herself, or those she cares about. This causes her to be overly trusting of others, especially when they display a quality she is worried of one day waking up and losing. When this inevitably does occur and Zutsutsu learns of it, she will quickly seek to replace it. Fearing that she will cease to be 'alive' if she lets herself forget too much.

Biography

Early Years

Following her parents as they moved around conducting business with their trading caravan, Zutsutsu had a moderately comfortable childhood. Though she has no memory of it now, her parents trading company would often return to the eastern shores that border Thanalan. There they would trade various wares for fish that would get taken back to the city and turned into hard won gil. Nald'thal gave Zutsutsu's family a prosperous life, even if they had to work fervently for it.
This cycle of opportunity continued for a brief time until one day the Garleans invaded Eorzea. While not yet striking against Ala Mhigo, the Empire sent out small scouting teams elsewhere; one of them happened to be a small fishing village that Zutsutsu's family was visiting. The devastation was horrible as scouts set fire to the village, killing those who resisted. The survivors were rounded up to be taken back to Ilsabard so they could be indoctrinated into the soon to be expanding empire.
Once in Ilsabard, Zutsutsu quickly fell under the notice of a promising scientist and engineer; a man who would later become known as Septus Nan Malen. He was cruel and viewed the Lalafell as nothing more than an experiment. Through a series of tests he devised himself, he learned that the young Lalafell was highly intelligent and had an above average constitution because of her harsh life in the desert. She was a perfect candidate for his specialized area of research which was quickly growing to attract the attention of the Garlean Elite each passing day.
It was at this point that the Lalafell began losing her memories and exhibiting other strange side effects. To this day she remembers visiting a strange room that smelled like burning copper. There was a peculiar table in it, which she lay down on. It had a depression for her face to rest on, so her back would be towards the ceiling. An overpowering but pleasant smell of flowers would assault her senses and she would dream of places she had never seen before.
Afterwards she would wake, feeling a terrible pain in the back of her head. The stench of burning metals returned in force. The processes would repeat so often that she lost count of how many visits she had made to this place. The pain faded in time, but the results of the experiment would control her life far into the future.
Septus Nan Malen began requiring Zutsutsu to appear less often in his strange room, and instead left her under the tutelage of a detachment of soldiers and scouts. They were a special unit that used many of the things Septus developed to sabotage the war effort in Eorzea. Their intent was to bring quicker victory to the Empire by disrupting the enemies supply lines, and the infrastructure which built its weapons of war.
She became one of the most adept of this unit; the experiment making her the most nimble, able to lift things many times her size, and the most devious with the traps that she set. Despite her hard work there was always a minder nearby watching her with a strange device. Zutsutsu was never sure why they didn't trust her. She had to act perfectly; think ideally or a great pain would rack her body. It happened whether or not her minders were there, no matter how far she got away from them. She also grew incredibly tired after short bursts of activity. The others gave her more rations to compensate for this, but she always suspected they hated her for being different.

Exodus & The Calamity

Eventually her experimentation and training was over and Zutsutsu returned to Eorzea along with Septus and a team of saboteurs. They had many covert successes that secured their hold over Ala Mhigo. The team began to strike out into other territory, having been granted a small and fast airship for their distinguished service.
It was during this time that they arrived in La Noscea, intent on destroying a major shipyard near Bronze Lake. There was a storm casting dark clouds above that thundered with Rhalgr's fury. As Zutsutsu was planting some explosives at the base of a large crane, she heard a sickening puckering sound. She quickly turned to assess what could have made such a distinctive noise, and discovered that there was a giant knife thrust through the chest of the one that had been minding her. There were other bodies too. It made her happy seeing them, but she couldn't think about that for too long or the pain would come.
The man that had been stabbed eventually slumped off the knife, his lifeblood spilling into the earth. The creature that killed him stood tall, imposing, majestic. It wore a cowl to shield itself from the rain and carried a sturdy lantern easily the size of Zutsutsu herself. A distinctive crack ran down the side of it, but the candle inside did not flicker. It burned with a hot intensity that seemed to be fueled by the creatures rage. That rage did not turn upon Zutsutsu, instead it turned away to attack the others that remained. She was left by herself. Alone. Free to take a chance to run away.
Zutsutsu took that chance and fled as far as she could make it on foot. She took shelter in a strange castle. Though she no longer remembers how, somehow she traveled by boat during her flight, and arrived back in the deserts of Thanalan. She wanted to place as much distance between herself and the seas as possible. If Septus was still alive, he would be looking for her. There she lived as a hermit, not trusting anyone and quickly learning to hunt for her own food and survive. It was a harsh existence, made even harsher by the fall of Dalamud. Somehow she survived and continued living as a scavenger and hunter for five years.

Life in the City

Zutsutsu eventually grew tired of surviving in the wild by herself, confident that Septus had forgotten about her or died, and struck out for Ul'dah. There she quickly grew accustomed to breaking and entering so that she could find food for herself. It was during one of these chance encounters that she met the merchant Melodie Valtyr while intruding upon her house. Melodie chose to hire Zutsutsu, promising the peculiar Lalafell that she would never starve again.
Working in Melodie's employ Zutsutsu put many of her talents to use. Gathering information was simple for her, she was small and easy to forget. Every now and then her knowledge of sabotage would come in handy giving Melodie a distinct advantage against other cut-throat dealers in the underbelly of Ul'dah.
