History

Pre-coma

-This will update as her personal storyline progresses. Don't want to give out all the details.-

Ramona Spencer, a Black Mage who joined an outfit of Sellswords for reasons yet unknown to her. The heiress at the wrong place at the wrong time doing the wrong thing. After all, it was because of a soulstone in her possession that she had brutally eliminated the entire outfit in a dire attempt to save them or she'd like to believe. How did the soulstone come to her? She could ask the same thing, it was passed to her by someone. Who? She doesn't know too. It was supposed to be a routine security contract. Researchers wanted someone to clear out the Wanderer's Palace for cheap. Their nameless and unrenowned outfit needed a way to boost their renown. It worked favorably for both of parties. Until it didn't.

The ruins themselves possessed traps that incapacitated most of the outfit. Pragmatism bid them withdraw and plan. Desperation and a deadline bid them forward and weather whatever storm is thrown their way. Desperation won. So they did forge on, facing tonberry and a number of wild animals that called the ruins home, carrying the wounded all the while. Their outfit's creed demanded no one left behind unless they are well and truly dead. Their creed would also influence Ramona in a desperate act that she believes was born out of the sense to protect rather than the opportunistic envy in her that saw a convenient way to end an obstacle and pass it off as an unfortunate casualty.

The fundamental flaw in their composition was that they lacked anyone with knowledge of such places or aetherical expertise in general. Ramona then was still a fledgling Black Mage who had no idea she was a Black Mage, though her aether was remarkable it was useless when all she could produce were explosions. She was only an impressionable girl at the young age of 20 when she joined them. Hardly a master of aether. Just a girl with too much of it. More to the point she was only ever interested in calling down lightning, freezing things in place, and making the whole world go boom.

In the end, the stone whispered to her of a magic that was otherwise forbidden but would assuredly save her friends. If she was up to the challenge. A spell by the name Meteor. Just as desperation fueled their outfit to rage on, so too did desperation force Ramona to gamble. What the stone did not reveal to her was that she needed immense aether to produce such a spell. Aether she would unwittingly siphon from her own companions to fuel to botched spell. She saw a fraction of the meteor slip past the clouds before it exploded before it's time. The aetherical recoil fragmented her memories and has since then made her aether chaotic. She could still produce the explosions that entertained her but there was always something off about every little spell she did, and every little time she channeled her aether. Of course the Shockwave from the blast itself had thrown her a few yalms through a stone pillar.

The last thing she remembered were the bleached bones of her companions rising again. Somehow she had not just killed all 23 of them but desecrated their deaths. After that she had fallen to her long slumber. Half a year later was when she would reawaken.

The stone itself supposedly fractured as she failed her spell. The shards scattered into the wind, resonating and calling to her, one shard at a time. The shard found at the Nymian ruins had given her the reason why she had slept for so long. As well as pointed her to what she assumed was Amdapor Keep for the second shard, where instead she had found a set of robes that simply felt right on her and has since claimed it for her own, threading a story for it. The Second shard is yet to be found while the first lies the possession of Professor Jigumundo Darkbore. It is unknown just how many shards there are but it is clear they call to her one at a time.

Re-learning Thaumaturgy

She had woken up in casket to be interred roughly 6 fulms into the ground. She would not let this happen and in a fit of panic and some mild claustrophobia, blasted her way out, charring the otherwise lovely dress her parents had ordered for her and this specific occassion when they would give up on their beloved and only daughter and finally lay her to rest, that and caking her face with a thin layer of ash, dirt and grime. The healers apparently said she might live but 6 months later it was clear that she would no longer wake up.

Until she did.

There were few in attendance at her funeral. To be precise, just her parents. It would not do well to the family business if news were to spread that the only scion to it had died. The plan was to adopt some street girl or get a whore and dress her up as their daughter. They were too aged to produce one more child. They were too aged to survive the heart attack that came with the realization that their daughter was not only dead but was a zombie too. The father had definitely died with browned pants as he was the one who suggested the idea and shat himself when he thought it was the vengeful spirit of their daughter come to take vengeance for this insult to her identity. The flames, tattered dress, and wild look in her eye said as much at least.

The person presiding her funeral had unfortunately eaten a fireball to the face.

And as the first five minutes of her slumber passed, she realized two things. She had killed 3 people and for some reason she was a Thaumaturge. She also realized several other things. Who the hell was she? What was she doing here? How could she be a thaumaturge? And finally who were those people she that had died? One of which she killed directly after putting two and two together to make four and the other two, an elderly couple by the looks of it, indirectly by means of shock. Perhaps their body's failed them and this was all just a coincidence. Yes. Just a coincidence.

She had rummaged around the dead bodies to find a sizable amount of gil and a few scraps of paper. On it was the name 'Reeve' which she assumed was the surname of the couple or at least the guy she unwittingly killed. Another was 'Ramona Spencer' it had also said this name was carved onto the casket though most of the note had been charred off. She took a quick look at the casket and true enough found Ramona Spencer on the sides. Hastily carved at any rate.

Concluding that her name was Ramona Spencer, she had tried to summon the flames again. Tried to recreate the panic in her system and caked the crime scene with fire, through some miracle. Of course the brush also caught fire but there was nothing she could do about that. With a sizable amount of gil in her hands, a dirty appearance and a tattered dress Ramona went on to try and find a direction for herself.

Two years, lots of debts, so much money owed, failed experiments with her seemingly chaotic and erratic aether, running away from debt collectors, incurring more debt, hiding out in Thanalan for half a year, praying she wasn't going to be tempered, not getting tempered, perfecting her skill with fire magic by way of frying amal'jaa on a near daily basis in those six months, learning how to weave because it sounded lucrative, giving up on weaving because it was too much hassle, incurring more debt, frying a debt collector, running away from loan sharks, two years later....

The first significant thing that happened was when she met a roegadyn in the markets of Ul'dah. He was a tall and broad sea colored man. He spoke with refinement and carried himself with much dignity. She had run into him on accident and was thrown to the ground as a result. He was fast since she did not really run into him, more like she ran her neck into his hand and was thrown to the ground. She wasn't about ready to fry him where the Brass Blades would see. And it was unexpected but this roegadyn man knelt down and offered a hand to help her up. He introduced himself as Skaenorn Nebblansyn as well as apologized profusely for throwing her to the ground. What puzzled her more was that he addressed her as "Little Fiona" and asked her to come with him.

First of all she clarified him. She wasn't this Fiona person and that he probably got the wrong person. He dismissed his earlier mistake and corrected himself but there was no mistaking the urgency this man's voice carried. So she followed him. If he tried anything he'd be smoked bones in an alley somewhere. He led her to around the markets to a nondescript building in the Steps of Thal. He ushered her in to find a lalafell behind a desk. He looked young despite the race and somehow Ramona felt the urge to punt him and his innocent face. The lalafell in question, tried to complain but went slack when he laid eyes on her. The recognition was clear as day on his face and was about to say something before Skaenorn had cut him off, tell him to address her as Ramona Spencer. A mask of confusion fell on the lalafell's face but he simply nodded and addressed Ramona as such. Skaenorn had told the lalafell, apparently named Popoto, to gather the rest of the staff at the front desk as soon as possible.

Half a bell later she found herself surrounded by another roegadyn, a lalafell, a highlander, an elezen and a miqo'te. Swift Mountain, Sesesi Sesi, Fareman Darkeye, Sofine Dornier, and U'Nome Nebblansyn. These seven people, a motley crew of people, including Skaenorn who seemed to head the outfit and Popoto who was the second in command were supposedly her retainers. And that they were Spencer Enterprises. They had been under Skaenorn's guidance when their previous employers had mysteriously died and their daughter mysteriously vanishing.

Ramona had effectively inherited a business and she had no idea how to run. So Skaenorn still pretty much runs the business and simply gives a part of revenue to Ramona.

One of her retainers, U'Nome, had recommended her to see one Professor Jigumundo Darkbore, since he heard from someone who knew someone who knew someone that the Good Professor is likely to help her relearn Thaumaturgy. He urged her to meet him with caution as the lalafell may prove to be dangerous. Ramona had said she would consider it and dismissed him. She had at least found herself means and a stable lifestyle after living like a refugee for the past two years.

Life was good but somehow it begged to be better.

So she threw together and adventuring outfit and bought a staff with a jeweled focus as befit her and her allowance then parked her ass in the Quicksand, meeting A'ranoh Tia and keeping her ears to the ground for some work opportunity. That was when she had heard of a band of adventurers trying to brave Stone Vigil, when she realized she didn't quite like the cold but found solace in figuring out and cooking wyverns alive. She had resolved to keep the adventuring to just within Eorzea for the time being. It was then that she had met Ququki Quki, Shashato Shato, Kestrael Grymstahlwyn, and N'velhi Tia, who would then thrust her in another dangerous situation where Garlean orphans were made and a Vanguard turned into slag. Though it pains her that she no longer sees any of the four, looking back they were probably the first friends she had made after she had woken up.

Learning that she was still too much of a loose cannon with her magic, she had finally taken up U'Nome's recommendation and visited the University of Aether where she would soon meet Professor Jigumundo Darkbore. This lalafell took an interest in her fragmented memory and agreed to train her once more as a thaumaturge. Though their meeting would be brief, he would be an important person in events to come. More to the point she had some idea on why her aether was like this and what the implications of it were.

It would be days of practice that passes before she would meet Adeya Evenar, who would be a key player in thrusting Ramona on the journey she was on now. She would be placed into a small operation for the Illustre Alliance that involved the Wanderer's Place, where she would find the first fragment and make the first step on her journey. They would only be acquaintances for now.

Getting to Limsa Lominsa and then finally to Upper La Noscea where she could then meet with the others of the expedition, was another obstacle in itself. An obstacle overcome with the help of Avis Inkwood, Professor Darkbore's assistant. Of course as befitting a Ul'dahn miss Inkwood's help was not for free. In exchange for passage to Limsa, Ramona had essentially pledged herself to serve miss Inkwood.

She should have just said no and stayed in Vesper Bay.

Revelations Arc I

Ramona had been assigned to be under Yulfen Cinder's team. They were to comb their segment of the ruins for any objects or elements of interest. While most of the time was spent admiring architecture and engineering among other things, Ramona had ended up finding something else that would isolate her from a good chunk of other people for a good while yet.

The first shard of what she assumed was a soulstone. The vivid flash of images that invaded her mind seemed to think so too as her finger coiled around the insignificant piece of rock. It had almost gotten her killed as well were it not that she had company with her. She was not sure that the others would tell the higher ups of her odd shift in behavior but she would soon realize she'll never know the answer to it.

As everyone parted ways and returned to their respective parts of Eorzea, Ramona herself withdrew back to Thanalan. She kept the shard bundled in cloth because every time her fingers brushed the shard, it sent flood of images into her mind. One image in particular wherein she saw herself steal aether from and eventually kill off twenty three other people to cast a spell well beyond her means had made her stop her return home. She had resigned to simply let Skaenorn and the others wonder about her and withdrew into Thanalan instead of going straight to Ul'dah.

She had access to powers she had no idea how to control. The last thing she needed was to jeopardize the lives of those under her.

The days in isolation were spent studying the shard in her hand, exposing herself to the memories it contained in small doses. Soon it would show her that an aftereffect of the failed spell resulted in the soulstone shattering. It almost looked as though the spell's projectile resembled the soulstone. The shards flew to different corners of Eorzea, corners she would soon realize she had been in one way or another.

The second shard apparently lodged itself in Amdapor Keep. Ramona had resolved to comb the ruins alone. The less people around her, the less chance she would ever be a liability to others. No one needed to die meaninglessly. So she spent roughly a week alone, probing the ruins, avoiding voidsent and scrapping with anything else that called the ruins home. The peculiar thing was that the very air in the place felt as though it had formed hands and wrapped itself around her neck.

For every spell she casted, the grip tightened. Every little breath she took, the grip tightened. In her own pride she had forged forward, slowly suffocating with each step until it had gotten the better of her and laid her low. Her solace was that there would be one less murderer Eorzea had to worry about. Instead she had woken up in Quarrymill three days later with a lighter coinpurse. One of the locals had said that a group of adventurers had hauled her in and liberated some gil from her purse to pay for whatever lodging they had placed her in.

However that was not the odd part. Seeing herself in the vanity's reflection was the odd part. Where once her hair was brown, the locks now colored themselves a coerthas white. Her skin had turned paler than she remembered. Most of all her eyes, no longer dark green but red. She recoiled in shock at the devil she had become, it was clear that she only every tolerated for her coin or something like it.

There was a problem she gleaned from all this. Amdapor did not welcome her nor her methods. The hands felt as though they tightened significantly when she drew aether and burned or froze threats. Yet the hands only felt like they were lightly squeezing when she was doing anything else. She had to find an alternative method of defending herself without resorting to too much aether.

She had ended up in Mor Dhona trying to raise some funds for herself and study the hardened adventurers there. It was likely that she'd find someone who married aether and martial combat. It was worth investigating at least. Here she would sign on with a few researchers for a sum of coin in exchange for protection. Here she'd meet a group of individuals, most notable of which was a Limsan by the name Kurt Steel, the man basically helped her back on her fight and kept morale up for the rest of group when the job simply dragged on for too long.

It left a bad taste in her mouth when she would be indebted to him, well all seven of them were, and yet they could not actually do anything for him. He fought well but there was always a sense of recklessness in him, a resignation that ate away at the heart of their party. It would be later on that she'd receive correspondence from him asking her to help one of his friends were she still in Mor Dhona. It said that it would release her from whatever debt she had on him.

She wouldn't consider the debt paid until later on. However, she did gather some spark of brilliance from him. The sheer devastation he usually left in his wake was something akin to her own power. It would drive Ramona to Limsa where she would find a tutor or at least an axe.

Of Axes and Black Magic (ongoing)

In Limsa, she had not found tutelage but rather she had found an axe and practice. The beasts that roamed La Noscea were plentiful and provided to shortage of targets to fight and bruises to teach her new lessons. However the biggest one was when she had met Avis Inkwood again, wherein she had been recommended to return and report to the Good Professor. It would not be later until she would return to the good professor.

She would spend another week yet honing her axe blade. Her swings felt weak and pitiful. Her weight barely enough to carry her axe. Those two problems were evened out when she decided to use her aether to strengthen herself, allowing her to wield the weapon in one hand rather than two. Though she realized this would not make her stronger she had found a perfect balance wherein her aether aided her but did not do everything for her, she felt a a weighted two handed swing would deliver more power than a lazy one handed one.

The shard would have her return to Thanalan soon but not before running into Adeya Evenar once more. She offered Ramona help in exchange for nothing. Aid she would supposedly greatly need in her second expedition into Amdapor Keep. She had turned down the offer for help but also set the stage for when she would repay her debt to Kurt in full. Wherein she would at least make Adeya value her old friend more. At the end of this lesson it was not only Adeya who would walk away learning or realizing something. Ramona herself would too.

She returned to Ul'dah to the very doorstep of her business. Ramona, in her new appearance, was regarded with suspicion by her own people. Until they heard her voice and hear her point out evidence that only Ramona knew about them. Popoto was the first to welcome her back, Skaenorn had asked her where she had gone, where she disappeared to. She recounted her story starting from leaving Ul'dah for the Wanderer's Palace up until the very day she returned to the enterprise's doorstep. The roegadyn had responded by slapping her across the cheek and welcoming her back again, reinforcing the idea that she also had family in all her retainers left and that the 9 of them could have sorted something out.

While she disappeared every last one of them took up a discipline of war. They were hellbent on finding their employer and lay her to rest if necessary. To this end, Popoto had offered to help her learn the axe which was comical in itself but she found herself floundering around with it less and less.

The next order of business was visiting the good professor. He had made her realize certain things, most of all that she was simply running away from the problem and even making it worse with all the running away. She was capable of Black Magic and he recommended that she should know exactly what it does and how to use it to avoid any future complications. In addition to it, he had taken possession of the shard in her possession, as well as offered help in retrieving the second shard. The biggest warning that came from him were about voidsent and how they would take much interest in her aether.

After meeting with the professor, she would take the helm of the business from Skaenorn and simply ask him for advice. They dealt with in trade of raw materials on the market, specifically coke and potash. She would manage the business and look for more opportunities to widen their selection and subsequently raise their revenue. She had people relying on her and she was not like to let them down

Later on she'd meet Aaron and Aleria Frostheart. The professor echoed the sentiments of her retainers, that she should be in the company of others again and re-enter society from being a hermit for too long. To this end she had awkwardly made a friend out of Aaron Frostheart, because he seemed to share her hair color somehow there was something rewarding about making snide remarks about him. She'd meet the little sister later on and making a contest of who could make the biggest explosion. They would soon become her 'family' something she derived much pleasure and happiness from.

Days later she'd find herself breaking the promise she made with a few others and returned to Amdapor alone. Where she was approached with a deal by a voidsent. She refused and it had resorted to force. It had almost succeeded in killing her were it not for Popoto and Skaenorn shadowing her ever since she left Ul'dah. In the end she had once again escaped that place by the skin of her teeth and had some hand marks on her neck to show for it as well as a thorough scolding from both her retainers.

She returned to Ul'dah and resolved to improve in the axe and properly finding help before returning to Amdapor once more. At least that's what she says.

Personality

Of course her personality was bound to change when she learned just what she did that led to her coma and then what happened after.

First and foremost is how, despite having an ego the size of Dalamud, she tries not to be close to others. Furthermore how she's relying on her sharp tongued responses to push people away much to her dismay as it never seems to work only draws them closer. On the upside she's not entirely sure about this at all since she's only met a handful of people ever since the first trigger brought a fraction of memories back and the incident at Amdapor Keep. She was very antisocial after learning about her past but through the insistence of a few people she's making some effort into being more and more of her old self. Even if it is just a plastic facade for now.

Despite all that, she still can't bring herself to just let someone lost be lost. Case and point she had offered to help a certain miqo'te find her way to Summerford Farms. Perhaps it was brought upon by some unconscious desire to redeem herself but she has been a little less selfish and a little more open with her hands when it comes to people asking for help or looking for it. That's one of the marked changes in her demeanor, of course the people she owes money to probably wouldn't care at all.

However, some things will never change and for Ramona it's how she's always been an opportunist at heart and how she's still swayed by gil, not as much as before but the clink can still change her mind. That and her huge ego built up from evading debt collectors and loan shark types. Even with her past come back to haunt her she still finds time to break into a free run across Ul'dah's alleyways to avoid some particularly nasty brutes who'd break her in two if they found out she's a few thousand gil short of the debt. Black Mage or no, there are some things more exciting than incinerating them outright or leeching them dry of aether then gut them.

She still also retains her respect for the working class. Anyone who can't earn a crust doesn't deserve to eat after all.
